Zysk netto brytyjskiego koncernu spadł do 2,25 mld USD, w porównaniu z 3,84 mld USD rok wcześniej.

Ceny ropy Brent spadły o prawie 20 proc. od lokalnego szczytu z kwietnia, podczas gdy ceny ropy WTI spadły o ponad 15 proc.

(BP, Kinder Morgan)

Najważniejsze, największe i najmocniej doceniane spółki regularnie wypłacające i podnoszące dywidendy, zwykle w długim okresie czasu wykazują wyższe stopy zwrotu, niż firmy o bardziej spekulacyjnym charakterze.

BP Warns of Q2 Charge of Up to $17.5 Billion
Citing the COVID-19 pandemic as both cause and long-term effect, BP PLC (NYSE: BP) on Monday announced that the oil and gas supermajor will take a noncash impairment charge of between $13.0 billion and $17.5 billion in the second quarter. The write-down follows a review of the company’s long-term price assumptions for oil, natural gas and carbon.

The write-offs include impairment charges (ang. utrata wartości) against plant, property and equipment (PPE) and exploration intangibles. The second-quarter write-offs represent only a part of an estimated total write-down of $8 billion to $11 billion in PPE and $8 billion to $10 billion in exploration intangibles. That implies future write-offs of $3.0 billion to $4.5 billion.

The company said that it now reckons the effects of the pandemic “having an enduring impact on the global economy, with the potential for weaker demand for energy for a sustained period.”

Company management also has “a growing expectation that the aftermath of the pandemic will accelerate the pace of transition to a lower carbon economy and energy system, as countries seek to ‘build back better’ so that their economies will be more resilient in the future.”

BP now estimates that the average price for a barrel of Brent crude out through 2050 will be around $55 a barrel. Natural gas at the Henry Hub (the main U.S. pricing point) is now forecast at $2.90 per million BTUs.

When the company filed its annual report for 2019 in March, BP offered three estimates of the 20-year average for Brent crude, natural gas and its refining marker margin. The high estimate for Brent assumed a price of $90 a barrel, the central estimate called for a price of $70 a barrel and the low estimate estimated a price of $50 a barrel. The high, central and low estimates for natural gas were $5, $4 and $2, respectively. Note that these estimates referred to prices through 2040.

The third estimate BP published in March called for the price of carbon to range from a high of $80 per metric ton (tonne) to a central forecast of $40 per tonne to a low of zero. The company now estimates the average price of carbon through 2050 at $100 per tonne.

The new price assumptions are “broadly in line” with a series of steps BP announced in February to bring the company into compliance with the climate goals of the Paris Accords. Those steps add up to reducing emissions to net zero across all the company’s operations by 2050 or sooner. For BP, getting to net zero means eliminating emissions totaling 55 million metric tons of carbon emissions from its operations and 360 million metric tons from the content of its oil and gas production. The company noted: “Importantly these are absolute reductions, to net zero, which is what the world needs most of all.”

BP noted Monday that it is reviewing its “intent to develop some of its exploration prospects.” That means that the company is also reviewing the carrying values of its intangible assets. In a note to the announcement, the company referred to its 2019 annual report: “[T]he majority of bp’s reserves and resources that support the carrying amount of the group’s oil and gas properties are expected to be produced over the next 10 years.” Reductions in the company’s carrying values almost certainly would be larger in aggregate than the write-downs disclosed Monday morning.

Investors had taken the company’s American depositary shares (ADSs) down by about 4.8% Monday morning. Those shares were trading at $23.55, in a 52-week range of $15.51 to $42.70 and against a 12-month price target of $32.45.

What concerns investors most is the impact the write-down will have on BP’s annual dividend of $2.52 per ADS. At Friday’s closing price of $24.75, the dividend yield was 10.18%. For BP to continue to pay that, cash flow needs to come from somewhere. So far, the company has not said where.

BP Adds $12 Billion in Liquidity as It Tries to Protect Dividend

Just days after announcing second-quarter noncash impairment charges that could reach as much as $17.5 billion, BP PLC (NYSE: BP) has new debt totaling about $12 billion in various countries around the world. In the United Kingdom, the rest of Europe and the United States, BP is issuing a total of around $7 billion in perpetual subordinated noncall fixed-rate notes, more commonly called hybrid notes.

The notes are being issued by BP Capital Markets and are “unconditionally and irrevocably guaranteed” by BP and the U.K.-Europe-U.S. notes carry interest rates ranging from 3.25% to 4.25%. Hybrid notes pay investors a regular interest payment but due to their subordinated nature, investors get paid last if the company becomes solvent. Hybrid notes also do not have a fixed redemption rate but may be redeemed in whole beginning on specified dates.

BP is issuing two euro-denominated notes (valued at €2.5 billion and €2.25 billion) that may be redeemed no earlier than March 22 in either 2026 or 2029 and one sterling-denominated note valued at £1.25 billion that may be redeemed after March 22, 2027. The redemption date can be reset to any date after those initial dates.

Because the hybrid notes do not have to be repaid, they put less pressure on the energy giant’s balance sheet. The anticipated impairment charges will boost BP’s gearing significantly and are quite likely to force the company to reduce its generous dividend of $2.52 per American depositary share (ADS). At a current ADS price of $23.72, the dividend yield is 10.26%.

When BP announced the impending impairment charges earlier this week, the company noted that the global impact of the COVID-19 pandemic could keep the demand for energy lower for a long time. The company also warned of an “acceleration” in the transition to a lower carbon world.

To minimize the impact of a transition to a lower carbon future, BP also said that it expects to produce the “majority” of its reserves and resources over the next decade. BP announced steps it plans to take to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2050, but that timetable may have to be speeded up as a result of the coronavirus outbreak.

BP’s ADSs traded flat just before noon Thursday, at around $23.72, in a 52-week range of $15.51 to $42.70. The consensus 12-month price target on the shares is $32.45.

What To Expect from BP Earnings
Paul Ausick
August 3, 2020 2:24 pm
Integrated oil & gas supermajor BP plc (NYSE: BP) reports second-quarter results before markets open Tuesday. There shouldn’t be too many surprises given that BP has already warned on a massive writedown, received a fresh ingestion of liquidity, and sold virtually all of its petrochemical business.

Analysts expect an adjusted loss per share of $1.10 on revenue of $42.8 billion. In the same quarter last year, BP reported earnings per share (EPS) of $0.84 and revenue of $72.7 billion. Low prices driven by a lack of demand due to the global COVID-19 pandemic are going to get the blame, in much the same way that both Exxon Mobil and Chevron laid their poor quarterly performance at the feet of the coronavirus.

The big question is how much longer BP can pay its $2.52 annual dividend per American Depositary Share (ADS). At a price of around $22 per ADS, the company’s dividend yield is more than 11%. BP paid $2.1 billion in dividends in the first quarter on underlying replacement cost profit (essentially net income) of $791 million.

BP has indicated that it will take an impairment charge of up to $17.5 billion on the value of its reserves. When it announced the impairment in June, the company said that it expects the pandemic to have “an enduring impact on the global economy, with the potential for weaker demand for energy for a sustained period.”

To give itself so balance sheet relief, BP issued some $12 billion in several offerings of hybrid notes that require only that interest be repaid. If BP goes broke, the noteholders go to the end of the line for repayment.

Privately held Ineos has agreed to acquire BP’s global petrochemical business for $5 billion to add more strength to BP’s balance sheet. The deal is expected to close before the end of the year.

There could be more writedowns announced Tuesday or even later in the year. The company has said it is reviewing plans to explore some of its assets. If it chooses not to explore, the carrying value of those assets drops, maybe to zero.

Likewise, the company has not written down property, plant, or equipment assets. Combined with the possible exploration writedowns, BP could be looking at additional impairments totaling up to $4.5 billion.

BP’s stock traded at $22.08 in the mid-afternoon Monday in a 52-week range of $15.51 to $40.08. The consensus price target on the stock is $31.09. Shares have lost more than $6 apiece since mid-June.

BP będzie produkować zielony wodór - niestety nie w Polsce, a w Niemczech
10 listopada 2020, 16:31

ENERGIA ODNAWIALNA BP WODÓR
Koncern BP oraz duńska grupa Orsted nawiązały współpracę, której celem jest rozwijanie technologii pozyskiwania tzw. zielonego wodoru - informuje agencja Reutera.

Projekt będzie realizowany w należącej do BP rafinerii Lingen, zlokalizowanej w północno-zachodniej części Niemiec.
