BP looks to North Sea, U.S. shale for near-term oil and gas boost

LONDON (Reuters) - BP (NYSE:BP) is targeting the North Sea and U.S. shale basins to boost oil and gas supplies in the short term in response to the global energy crisis, its head of oil and gas operations told Reuters.

BP aims to cut its oil and gas output by 40%, or 1 million barrels of oil equivalent per day (boed), between 2019 and 2030 as part of its strategy to slash greenhouse gas emissions and build up a large renewables business.

But the company has boosted its spending on oil and gas in 2022 by $500 million in response to soaring energy prices and a supply crunch following years of under investment in the sector and in the wake of disruption to Russian supplies of gas to Europe.

BP is focusing its short-term output growth in the North Sea, where it produces around 130,000 boed, as well as shale fields in the United States, which produced 317,000 boed in the first half of the year, BP head of Production and Operations Gordon Birrell told Reuters.

"We're pulling forward some North Sea projects," Birrell said. One such project is the Murlach field, Birrell said.

Mulach, which is planned to start production in June 2025, will be connected to the existing Eastern Trough Area Project (ETAP) platform some 7 kilometres away, according to development plans BP submitted in April.

"Every one of our big fields has investment opportunities that we are doing as much as we can to move forward in time,"

BP became a major producer in the onshore U.S. shale basins following a $10.5 billion acquisition from BHP in 2018.

The company has invested heavily in technology to reduce the carbon emissions from its shale operations, known as BPX, including by electrifying drilling rigs in the oil-rich Permian basin, Birrell said.

"The development phase is ongoing and we are putting more capital into that in response to the energy crisis," he said. "Some of it is going straight into drilling and production, some of it going into reducing emissions of the facilities.”

"Production will keep growing in BPX, we want to keep growing that business," he said

Investing.com -- BP (LON:BP) posted its second highest quarterly profit in its history 8) on Tuesday after another huge quarter for its upstream and trading divisions.

The UK-based oil and gas major said it will increase its dividend by over 10% and also added another $2.5 billion to its ongoing buyback program.

Underlying replacement cost profit, the group's preferred measure of profitability, more than doubled from a year earlier to $8.15 billion, albeit that figure was down slightly from $8.45 billion three months earlier.

Strong cash flow due to sustained high oil prices meant that the group was able to shave another $800 million from its net debt, which stood at $22 billion at the end of the quarter. That's now down by nearly one-third from a year earlier, when many doubted that BP and other majors would ever be able to shed the debt they had taken on during the initial phase of the pandemic.

The company said its financial strength, coupled with the current outlook for oil prices, means it expects to be able to deliver share buybacks of around $4.0 billion per annum and have capacity for an annual increase of around 4% in the ordinary dividend through 2025.

The numbers are the latest in a series of blowout figures from the oil and gas sector, following on from Exxon Mobil (NYSE:XOM), Chevron (NYSE:CVX), TotalEnergies (EPA:TTEF), and Shell (LON:RDSa) last week.

BP workers at Rotterdam refinery begin work slowdown - union

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - Workers at BP (NYSE:BP)'s refinery in Rotterdam began a "work-to-rule" action after an ultimatum expired at noon with no new pay agreement in place, a union spokeman said on Monday.

Jaap Bosma of the CNV union said the action, under which workers do no more than their contract exactly specifies and work is slowed, would be followed by cuts in refining volume and eventually complete strikes if no agreement is reached.

"It is definitely not going to remain at just this," he said.

BP Plc's bp pulse to expand charging network at Marks and Spencer locations

British multinational oil and gas company BP (NYSE:BP) announced Thursday that the company’s electric vehicle charging business, bp pulse will install high-speed charge points at around 70 Marks and Spencer (OTC:MAKSF) (LON:MKS) retail outlets.

The energy company is ramping up to the pace of liquidating fossil-fuel assets to raise funds to invest in renewable-energy projects amid a global push for decarbonization by energy firms.

The first pilot charging sites are open at M&S Maidstone Eclipse and Southgate stores, with an initial target to install around 900 points, adding up to 40,000 kilowatt-hours of charging capacity within the next two years.

BP and M&S first teamed up in 2005 to introduce M&S Food stores at bp retail sites. More than 250 bp pulse charge points are already available at over 60 bp-operated forecourts, which also offer M&S Food.

Shares of BP are down 0.09% in mid-day trading on Thursday.

Investing.com -- BP PLC (LON:BP) has unveiled annual income that more than doubled to a fresh record high, leading the oil major to kick off a fresh round of share buybacks and hike its dividend.

Underlying earnings for the year soared by just over 115% to $27.65 billion, the highest in the company's 114-year history, although the figure remained below the record returns of peers Shell PLC (LON:SHEL) and Exxon Mobil Corp (NYSE:XOM).

The bumper results fueled an increase in BP's dividend by 10% to 6.61 cents per ordinary share. It announced a further $2.75B in share buybacks in the first quarter as well.

Shares in BP climbed by more than 3% in early European trading on Tuesday.

However, underlying replacement cost profit for the three months to December 31 dipped to $4.8B, down from $8.2B in the prior quarter. Analysts had expected the figure to come in at $5.11B.

In a statement, the group said it was hit by a "below average" result at its key gas marketing and trading division. Underlying profit at its gas and low carbon energy unit fell to $3.15B from $6.24B in the third quarter.

BP added that it also saw oil and gas prices decline from extraordinarily elevated levels seen earlier in 2022 following the outbreak of the war in Ukraine.

BP jumps on fossil fuel vision The U.K. energy giant reported a 29% EPS gain, just missing, while
revenue rose 33% to $69.3 billion.
But BP (BP) spiked to a three-year
high, after downshifting an aggressive move toward renewables.
The U.K.-based energy giant anticipates oil and gas production
to be around 2.3 million barrels
of oil equivalent per day in 2025.
By 2030, BP expects to be producing 2 million. That would be 25%
below BP’s 2019 production, but
much higher than its prior goal of

BP boss awarded £10m pay deal
Further signs emerged today of big oil bosses cashing in on the surge in energy prices after the CEO of BP was awarded over £10 million in pay.

Bernard Looney’s remuneration is 172 times the median pay at the company, its annual report showed. It comprised a salary of £1.4 million, a short-term bonus of £2.4 million and a long-term award of £6 million.

Looney, who has been CEO since July 2020, has racked up 8.7 million shares, options and share interests since taking on the job, which are worth a combined £47.7 million at today’s prices if they are all awarded in due course.

It comes just a day after Shell came under fire after it revealed its outgoing CEO Ben van Beurden was in line for a payout of up to £21 million.

BP said the bonus “is based on performance against annual measures and targets set at the start of the year” and reflects “the unique characteristics of the energy sector”.

Shell v BP – The Oil Majors in Numbers

Shell and BP are oil majors listed on the FTSE 100. Both shares are highly valued by income investors and usually feature in pension funds, due to their consistent and dependable income. Let us take a look at some key data before delving into the 5 year performance:

https://ftsedividends.co.uk/index.php/2 ... n-numbers/
...
These are 2 very high quality stocks, whilst there are ongoing threats of further windfall taxes and a decline in oil demand, as global economies move towards greener energy, there is clearly a future for both Shell and BP. Both companies are investing in greener energy solutions and they are likely to be market leaders for the foreseeable future.

I invest in both of these stocks and I will continue to add to my holdings, as and when I see opportunities.

Rising crude prices supported BP and Shell shares. The oil majors rose 4.2% and 3.5%, among the FTSE 100’s best performers.

BP’s shares rose despite, a US federal investigation finding that a BP subsidiary violated workplace safety practices, leading to the deaths of two workers.

The investigation concerns an incident that caused fatal burns to two workers in an Oregon, Ohio refinery’s crude unit, operated by BP Products North America. The regulator proposed a fine of $156,250.

LONDON (Reuters) - BP (NYSE:BP) and Abu Dhabi's state oil giant on Tuesday offered to acquire 50% of Israeli offshore natural gas producer NewMed Energy for around $2 billion, making their entry into Israel's growing energy sector.

The offer would involve acquiring NewMed's free floating shares and taking the company private. BP shares gained 2% by 0810 GMT while NewMed shares were up around 30%.

Abu Dhabi National Oil Co (ADNOC) and BP said they intend to form a new joint venture as part of the deal that will be "focused on gas development in international areas of mutual interest including the East Mediterranean."

NewMed is the largest stakeholder in the giant Leviathan offshore field, operated by Chevron (NYSE:CVX), which produces 12 billion cubic metres (bcm) of gas that are supplied to Israel, Egypt and Jordan.

NewMed and its partners plan to nearly double Leviathan's production to 21 to 24 bcm by 2027 are also exploring plans for a liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal to further boost exports, Chief Executive Officer Yossi Abu told Reuters.

"This is a sign of confidence in the East Med becoming a major supplier of gas to Europe," Abu said.

The offer is a further sign of the strengthening economic links between Israel and the United Arab Emirates since the two countries agreed to normalise ties in 2020.

Last year, Abu Dhabi's Mubadala Petroleum acquired from Delek Drilling a 22% stake in the east Mediterranean Tamar gas field for about $1 billion.

For BP, the deal highlights the British company's focus on growing natural gas production after Chief Executive Bernard Looney last month slowed down its shift away from fossil fuels.

The offer price is 12.05 ILS ($3.38) per share, reflecting a 72% premium above the pre-deal market price, valuing the entire company at about 14.1 billion ILS, or $3.96 billion.

After the deal closes NewMed will become a private corporation equally held by the BP-ADNOC JV and Delek Group, which holds the remaining 50%.

The Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries and allies, known as OPEC+, unexpectedly announced on Sunday it will cut production by over 1 million barrels per day through to the end of 2023.

This move came ahead of a virtual meeting of the group’s monitoring committee later Monday, which had been widely expected to confirm the output levels agreed upon in November.

By 03:50 ET, U.S. crude futures traded 5.6% higher at $79.88 a barrel, while the Brent contract climbed 5.5% to $84.27.

This unexpected development has helped the region’s large oil and gas companies, with the share prices of Shell (LON:SHEL), BP (LON:BP), TotalEnergies (EPA:TTEF), and Eni (BIT:ENI) all up around 4%.
