Amerykański fundusz hedgingowy Third Point* domaga się podzielenia brytyjskiej spółki ubezpieczeniowej Prudential na dwie części i chce, aby po 172 latach działalności jej centrala znalazła się poza Wielką Brytanią, informuje Reuters.

Third Point jest akcjonariuszem Prudential. Zainwestował w spółkę ubezpieczeniową 2 mld USD. W przesłanym do członków jej władz liście przekonuje, że nie ma logicznych argumentów przemawiających za obecną strukturą firmy. Twierdzi, że Prudential powinien zostać podzielony na część działającą w USA i część działającą w Azji. Obecnie działalność na tych dwóch obszarach jest zarządzania z centrali w Londynie. Third Point argumentuje, że wyprowadzenie jej z Wielkiej Brytanii pozwoliłoby zaoszczędzić nawet 200 mln GBP rocznie.

The British insurance giant Prudential Plc has today announced plans to demerge its US business in Q2 2021. The proposed demerger would accelerate its Jackson separation, completing the breakup of the 173-year old insurer and its transformation to focus exclusively on its high-growth Asia and Africa businesses. The demerger is the latest separation the insurer has faced since it completed the demerger of UK operation M&G in 2019.

Prudential shares fall as Jackson demerger shifts to second half

LONDON (Reuters) - Shares in Prudential (NYSE:PUK) fell 5% on Thursday as the life insurer said the spin-off of its U.S. business would not take place until the second half.

Analysts were expecting the demerger, announced last year following pressure from activist investor Third Point (NYSE:SPNT), to take place this month. Prudential had previously said the demerger would take place in the second quarter.

The company said that while regulatory approvals for the demerger had been received from Michigan and New York, "regulatory engagement" was continuing so detail on Jackson's first-quarter performance could be included.

"The U.S. demerger will complete Prudential's structural transformation into a business solely focused on the growth opportunities of Asia and Africa," chief executive Mike Wells said in a trading statement ahead of the company's annual general meeting on Thursday.

Prudential's shares were down 5.4% at 0930 GMT, one of the worst performers in the FTSE 100.

Jefferies (NYSE:JEF) analysts described the demerger delay as "disappointing", while retaining their "buy" rating on the stock.

Wells said that while vaccination roll-outs should bring "a gradual return to more normal economic patterns", uncertainty remained over the speed of roll-outs and their success.

New business profit in the life insurer's Asia and Africa operations rose by 21% to $624 million in the first quarter, helped by strong performance in China.

Asia and Africa annual premium equivalent (APE) sales rose 14% to $1.2 billion.

Jackson's first-quarter new business premiums were in line with the second half of 2020 and sales of variable

annuities were up. Sales of fixed index annuities and fixed annuities in the same period remained at historically low

levels following earlier pricing actions, the company said.

Prudential reiterated that it planned a $2.5-3 billion equity raising once the demerger is completed, likely to be through a global offering to institutional investors and a public sale in Hong Kong to retail investors.

Prudential also said it would consider a preferential offering to Hong Kong-resident eligible employees and agents.

Britain's banks drag London's bourse seriously lower

On London's equity markets the standout losers were the banks, with Barclays falling by 9.09%, Standard Chartered by 7.69%, NatWest Group by 5.69%, Lloyds Banking Group by 4.6%, and HSBC Holdings by 4.96%.
Elsewhere, insurer Prudential also saw a significant fall, dropping 12.43%, despite reporting a better-than-expected rise in annual profit on the back of new insurance sales and noting that China's relaxation of Covid restrictions had also provided a boost.

In the FTSE 100, Prudential was the worst blue-chip performer on Wednesday, plunging 11% as it posted mixed yearly results amid the wider market turmoil.

The insurer’s annual premium equivalents - a measure of the new policies sold - rose 4.7% to $4.39 billion from $4.19 billion in 2021. This came ahead of company-compiled consensus of $4.22 billion.

Meanwhile, hurting its bottom-line was a $30.16 billion investment loss, swinging from a gain of $3.49 billion in 2021. Pretax profit halved to $1.48 billion from $3.02 billion.

‘Prudential’s results may well have got a better hearing a week ago before the collapse of SVB but right now investors are treating financial stocks with the same suspicion as something they’ve found on their shoe,’ said AJ Bell Analyst Russ Mould.

(Reuters) -Prudential Financial Inc reported a lower-than-expected quarterly profit on Tuesday, as the life insurer saw a decline in assets under management.

The respite in the economy after the markets priced in a milder recession was short-lived as a string of high-profile bank collapses sparked a sector-wide turbulence last month and roiled financial stocks.

As a result, assets under management declined 12.5% to $1.42 trillion in the quarter as investors yanked capital from speculative assets and instead sought refuge in safer bets.

Shares of the New Jersey-based company, down 16% so far this year, fell another 2% in extended trading on Tuesday.

The insurer's after-tax adjusted operating income was $990 million, or $2.66 per share, in the three months ended March 31, compared with $1.19 billion, or $3.10 per share, a year earlier.

Analysts on average had estimated a profit of $2.93 a share, according to data from Refinitiv IBES.

Prudential had last year said it was making progress in moving its business focus from market-sensitive revenue segments to more stable and recurring sources of income.

Chief Executive Charles Lowrey said on Tuesday the company was advancing its M&A strategy to expand "alternative capabilities and generate additional fee-based revenue".

Peer MetLife Inc (NYSE:MET) will report first-quarter results after market hours on Wednesday.

The signs of China’s weaker-than-expected recovery from a long period of pandemic lockdowns had a big impact on Prudential shares, which fell 2% or 23p to 1148p.

The insurer has refocused its operations to target the high growth savings and investment markets of Asia and Africa, but shares remain lower over the year-to-date despite the reopening of the Hong Kong-China border.

Prudential rallied after JPMorgan Cazenove placed the shares on 'positive catalyst watch' into first-half results and said the company is on track to beat consensus for new business sales/profits by 5%/13% in 2023.
