Bombardier lifts forecast for business jet deliveries as demand rebounds

(Reuters) -Bombardier Inc raised its full-year estimates for revenue and aircraft deliveries on Thursday, helped by higher business jet traffic and demand for planes after the pandemic sapped orders last year.

The planemaker also said it would use less free cash in 2021 than previously expected, after beating analysts' estimates for quarterly revenues on higher deliveries and demand for aftermarket services.

According to FlightAware data, business jet flights were up 23% in the week-beginning July 21 over 2019 levels in the United States, the world's largest market for corporate aviation.

Rivals Textron (NYSE:TXT) and General Dynamics Corp (NYSE:GD)'s Gulfstream Aerospace are raising production to meet higher demand.

Free cash flow usage for 2021, a metric closely watched by investors, is now expected to be better than $300 million, compared with $500 million. Bombardier (OTC:BDRBF) is forecasting 120 business jet deliveries in 2021, up from 110.

Full-year revenue is expected to exceed $5.8 billion, up from more than $5.6 billion.

Business jet revenue for the three months ending June 30 jumped 50% to $1.5 billion, compared with the $1.3 billion that analysts were expecting, according to Refinitiv.

But Montreal-based Bombardier posted an adjusted net loss of $137 million, or 6 cents per share, for the second quarter, compared with a loss of $248 million, or 11 cents, a year earlier.

Bombardier also disclosed that the Royal Canadian Mounted Police would join a global investigation into suspected bribery related to decade-old sales of company jets to Garuda Indonesia.

Bombardier, the latest aerospace group to face scrutiny over past deals, has previously said the Department of Justice and Britain's Serious Fraud Office are investigating the acquisition and lease of its CRJ1000 aircraft to the airline between 2011 and 2012.

Bombardier is cooperating "with all inquiring authorities," a spokeswoman said.

Bombardier lifts 2025 financial targets, production amid strong business jet market

MONTREAL (Reuters) -Business jet maker Bombardier (OTC:BDRBF) Inc on Thursday raised 2025 revenue and free cash targets at its investor day and said it would produce more planes, despite broader economic headwinds.

Corporate jet makers have reported swelling order backlogs on persistent strong demand for private flying in the U.S. But flatter global traffic, supply chain snags and the possibility of a recession remain concerns.

Bombardier shares were up about 6.5% in afternoon trading.

Bombardier Chief Executive Eric Martel told investors he expects tailwinds such as a growing backlog and few pre-owned planes available for sale to overcome headwinds like delays on parts.

Supply chain "is improving, but certain issues are persisting," Martel said. On the order side "it's a little slower" compared with 2022, but Bombardier remains comfortable with its backlog, he said.

Martel said the company expects to produce about 150 business jets by 2025, and is targeting more than $9 billion in annual revenue for that year, up from $6.9 billion in 2022.

Bombardier has been paying down debt and is targeting stronger free cash flow generation of more than $900 million in 2025 after being hit by a cash crunch while bringing new planes to market a decade earlier. It had a debt of about $5.6 billion as of Thursday.

Speaking later with reporters in Montreal, Martel added that while recent turmoil in the banking world had not led to buyers failing to make payments or to take deliveries, the company was seeing "hesitation."

Bombardier did not disclose a 2025 capital expenditures target, raising questions over the timing of company plans for a new, clean-sheet plane to market.

Martel said he does not see how the company could produce a new clean-sheet jet without spending billions of dollars.

Higher free cash flow in 2025 and an expected improvement in the company's credit rating to near investment grade levels would give Bombardier options for allocating capital. That could include reinvestment in its existing product lines, deals, or launching a new aircraft, the company said.

"We will only make investment decisions with the right balance sheet and not strain it by taking too much on at once," Chief Financial Officer Bart Demosky said.

Desjardins analyst Benoit Poirier said Bombardier's free cash, revenue and deliveries targets were stronger than expected and deemed the lack of a capital expenditures commitment less risky.

"A clean sheet design has received pushback from investors," Poirier wrote.

Bombardier also said it anticipates tripling its revenue from defense sales and services to more than $1 billion in the second half of the decade.

The company expects an adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) margin of 18% in 2025, down from an earlier target of 20% on high inflation on materials, Demosky said.

Bombardier quarterly profit beats estimates on demand for business jets

MONTREAL (Reuters) - Canada's Bombardier Inc on Thursday reported better-than-expected quarterly profit and higher revenue despite supply chain pressures, helped by demand for flying and maintaining private planes.

The Montreal-headquartered business jet maker reported a second-quarter profit of $10 million from continuing operations, compared with a loss of $109 million a year earlier.

Results of corporate jet makers have been powered by sustained demand from the wealthy for private flying over the last few quarters, but companies are wrestling with supply chain challenges that have made it harder to deliver planes.

CEO Eric Martel told analysts that despite "pressure points" such as smaller suppliers, the supply chain is improving and will "remain a key area of focus for the foreseeable quarters".

Last month, Gulfstream jet maker Textron Inc (NYSE:TXT) raised its full-year profit forecast on strong jet pricing.

Bombardier's aftermarket revenue, which comes from servicing planes, grew 19% on an annual basis, helping profitability.

However, there are early signs that demand may be flattening. Bombardier said on Thursday backlog at the end of June was up just 0.7% from the end of March at $14.9 billion.

On a per share basis, quarterly adjusted profit was 72 cents, compared with a loss of 48 cents a year earlier. Analysts polled by Refinitiv had expected profit of 28 cents per share.

Revenue rose 8% to $1.68 billion, in line with expectations.

Bombardier reported a cash burn of $222 million compared with free cash flow of $341 million a year ago, due to capital expenditures and a build-up in working capital to support higher jet deliveries in the second half of 2023.

The group said it remains on track to deliver at least 138 jets this year and hit its 2025 targets, which include turning over 150 jets to customers.
