(Reuters) - As 32 teams battle for the World Cup in Qatar, Adidas (OTC:ADDYY) and Nike also hope their shares can score a goal.

With FIFA projecting at least 5 billion viewers, the world's highest profile soccer event is a major opportunity for sports apparel makers marketing their jerseys, boots and other products with teams and individual players.

Adidas shares lost 6% during the month-long 2018 World Cup, when heavily favored Germany, an Adidas team, was knocked out early and the FIFA tournament was won by France, a Nike team. Nike gained 4% during the same period, beating the S&P 500's 1% gain.

In its quarterly conference call on Nov. 9, Adidas said it expects sales of about 400 euros ($415 million) related to the World Cup, which would amount to around 2% of additional annual revenue.

Nike did not immediately respond to a request for comment about the importance of the World Cup on its sales.

While soccer-related merchandise accounts for a fraction of both Adidas and Nike's overall businesses, hype around the World Cup and team jerseys can provide a halo effect driving sales of other kinds of merchandise, said Wedbush analyst Tom Nikic.

"If somebody in Germany buys a World Cup jersey, do they also buy a new pair shoes? Or if an Adidas sponsored team wins the whole thing, in the euphoria of winning the World Cup, do people buy more jerseys than they otherwise would have? That's where you can see some variability," Nikic said.

Nike is providing jerseys for 13 teams in this year's Cup, including Brazil, France and the United States, overtaking Adidas as the leader in World Cup jerseys. Seven teams are kitted out in Adidas jerseys, including soccer powerhouses Germany, Spain and Argentina.

Six countries are playing in Puma jerseys, with New Balance and other companies making up the remainder.

Four days into World Cup, Nike teams have accumulated 15 points, while Adidas-clad teams have accumulated 11 points.

So far during the tournament, shares of Nike have climbed over 1%, while Adidas and Puma are each down more than 3%.

Betting odds currently favor Nike teams Brazil and France as most likely to win the 2022 Cup.

Nike 's (NYSE:NKE) price target was raised to $120 from $115 by RBC Capital analysts in a research memo Wednesday previewing the company's fiscal second quarter.

The analysts, who maintained an Outperform rating on the stock, said investor skepticism remains "fairly elevated" for sporting goods and Nike ahead of 2Q23E earnings on December 20.

However, they added that if Nike can deliver low double-digit revenue growth with no change to FY23E guidance, and no major surprises for China, despite COVID headwinds, then sentiment on Nike could further improve.

"We forecast 2Q23E group revenues of $12.67bn (+12% reported, +17% cFX), gross margin of 42.1% (-380bps yoy), EBIT of $1.27bn (10.1% margin) and diluted EPS of $0.64," the analysts wrote.

"We expect higher markdown stance in N America and to a lesser extent EMEA to support revenue growth (both +18% cFX) which are stable on 2yr stacks. We observe market leading online brand heat metrics for both website traffic and social media momentum for Nike relative to peers, despite outsized absolute levels (traffic volume and follower count)," they added.

They also noted that points to watch out for include signs of improvement in China trends, progress on excess inventory liquidation, insight into new product introductions for lifestyle and performance footwear for 2023, and FY23E guidance changes.

Nike, Adidas shoe supplier Pou Chen to slash 6,000 jobs in Vietnam -sources

HANOI (Reuters) -Taiwan's Pou Chen Corp, the world's largest maker of branded sports footwear, plans to cut around 6,000 jobs at its Ho Chi Minh City plant in Vietnam due to weak demand, two local officials familiar with the company's plans said on Tuesday.

The firm's Pouyuen Vietnam factory will cut 3,000 jobs this month and not extend labour contracts for another 3,000 workers later this year, the officials said, declining to be identified because they were not authorised to speak to media.

The Pouyen Vietnam factory supplies global companies such as Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE). and Adidas AG (ETR:ADSGN) and is one the biggest employers in Ho Chi Minh City, with 50,500 workers.

Pou Chen said the Vietnam factory planned to cut no more than 3,000 staff in the latest round of layoffs amid uncertainty over the macroeconomic outlook, and the impact on operations would be limited.

"The company will prudently respond to the dynamic changes in the business environment," Pou Chen said in a filing to the Taiwan bourse.

Pou Chen shares fell 1.2% in early afternoon trade in Taiwan in a broader market that was down just 0.1%.

Telephone calls to a factory labour union official were not answered.

The plan to cut jobs marks a reversal for the company that in 2021 faced a labour shortage and manufacturing disruption in Vietnam due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Southeast Asian country is a global hub for manufacturing, and its economy in 2022 grew at the fastest pace in decades, but economists have warned of headwinds, with weakening global demand starting to impact trade shipments.

Vietnam's exports in January fell 26% from a year earlier, while imports were down 24%. A decline in imports may indicate a future contraction in industrial production as firms cut purchases of materials and equipment for production.

Morgan Stanley analysts said in a note Monday that the firm sees Nike (NYSE:NKE) slightly beating third quarter 2023 consensus estimates.

The analysts, who have an Overweight rating on Nike, raised the firm's price target on the stock to $140 from $138. They told investors that a "3Q EPS beat appears likely, though potentially less upside compared to last quarter."

"A number of data points signal upside potential to 3Q EPS: 1) Peers' better-than-expected Europe results (Puma, UAA, ADS, among others, & ~27% of NKE FY22 sales'), 2) encouraging intraquarter wholesale partner commentary on NKE's ongoing brand heat & 3) NKE's very conservative guidance, which suggests a material 3Q topline slowdown & deteriorating profitability," they wrote.

On the other hand, they acknowledged that "intraquarter channel checks suggest 1) broader NA sportswear demand has softened slightly as the region returned to a push market, & 2) promotional activity has worsened somewhat more than previously expected (as confirmed by Puma & ADS)."

However, while they expect these dynamics to offset some of the upside drivers, resulting in Nike potentially delivering less EPS upside than the last quarter, Morgan Stanley believes some EPS upside is still achievable and that a guidance raise is likely.

Postautor: slayer74 » 20 mar 2023 19:36

(Reuters) - Nike (NYSE:NKE) is expected to report a rise in third-quarter revenue and grow its market share through 2023, helped by major rival Adidas (OTC:ADDYY)' split with designer and rapper Kanye West that caused the German company to lose about $600 million in quarterly sales.

Nike is also expected to get a boost from higher sales of its Jordan Retros and some newer launches as the world's No. 1 sportswear maker stays ahead of rivals through its innovative product lines.

"There is an opportunity for Nike to pick more market from Adidas," said Jessica Ramirez, senior analyst at Jane Hali and Associates, adding that Adidas has not had as many bestsellers as Nike.

THE CONTEXT

Adidas cut ties with West in October after his antisemitic comments, causing the company to slash its 2022 dividend and warn of a first annual loss in three decades this year.

Nike has also doubled down on its product lines such as the LeBron 20s and Nike Mercurial shoes, while also grabbing a bigger chunk of the growing China market.

Telsey Advisory Group's Cristina Fernandez said that China is one market where Nike has significantly outperformed Adidas as it is in a much better position with inventories in the region, and has more localized products.

Still, Nike's margins are expected to be squeezed in the quarter as it continues to offer promotions and discounts to shed excess stock.

THE FUNDAMENTALS

** Nike is expected to report third-quarter revenue of $11.47 billion, a 5.5% rise from a year earlier, according to analysts polled by Refinitiv

** Q3 profit per share is expected to be 55 cents

** Nike will report Q3 earnings on March 21 after markets close

WALL STREET SENTIMENT

** Nike shares have declined nearly 7% in the last 12 months

** The current average rating of 39 analysts on Nike stock is "buy", with 25 rating it "buy" or higher - Refinitiv

** The median price target is $132, with at least 10 brokerages raising their PTs since January

(Reuters) - Nike raised its full-year revenue outlook on Tuesday after reporting quarterly results that beat estimates, but warned of margin pressures as it continues to get rid of excess inventory through heavy discounts.

The company saw strong demand for its sneakers, including classic styles such as Jordan Retro and newer franchise launches such as LeBron 20, that helped grow its market share.

Nike (NYSE:NKE) said its apparel inventory fell in the third quarter and expects to end fiscal 2023 with "healthy" inventory levels.

Rival Adidas (OTC:ADDYY) is still struggling from its split with the artist formerly known as Kanye West and the German company is expected to post its first annual loss in three decades this year.

Nike's shares fell 2% in extended trading on Tuesday after the company said it expects 2023 gross margin to decline about 250 basis points, at the low end of its previous forecast range.

The company's margins remain pressured by a strong U.S. dollar, higher freight costs and Nike's efforts to offer steeper discounts in an attempt to get rid of excess inventory, Chief Financial Officer Matthew Friend said.

Nike is in a much better position with inventories than it was in the past six months, Jessica Ramirez, senior analyst at Jane Hali and Associates said.

Sales in Greater China fell about 8% even as the country eased pandemic-related restrictions, which is expected to benefit the company in the near term.

Nike's recovery in China looks a lot more better than Adidas which has been "falling apart" in the country, Morningstar analyst David Swartz said.

Nike now expects reported revenue for the full year to increase in the high-single-digit range, compared with its previous forecast of growth in the mid single digits.

In the fourth quarter, the company expects flat to low-single-digit revenue growth, compared with estimates of a 2.42% rise, according to IBES data from Refinitiv.

Nike posted revenue of $12.39 billion in the third quarter beating estimates of $11.47 billion and reported a profit of 79 cents per share above estimates of 55 cents.
---
Investing.com -- Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) beat expectations for revenue and profit in the third quarter on double-digit gains in sales.

The footwear and apparel maker reported profit of 79 cents a share and revenue of $12.4 billion. Analysts expected third-quarter earnings of 56 cents a share and revenue of $11.48B. Revenue was up 14% from the same period a year earlier.

Shares rose more than 3% after-hours and are up 7% so far this year. After rising, the shares turned lower in after-hours trading, down 1.3%.

The company said its NIKE Direct sales rose 17% to $5.3B, and its NIKE Brand Digital sales rose 20%.

CEO John Donahoe said the strong results “offer continued proof of the success of our Consumer Direct Acceleration strategy.” He added: “Fueled by compelling product innovation, deep relationships with consumers and a digital advantage that fuels brand momentum, our proven playbook allows us to navigate volatility as we create value and drive long-term growth.”

In China, Nike said revenues as reported fell 8% but rose 1% on a currency-neutral basis despite challenges in December after the country’s shift on COVID-19 policies.

Gross margin decreased 330 basis points to 43.3%, largely because of discounting to sell inventory, higher product input costs, and unfavorable currency changes. Some of this was offset by strategic pricing actions, Nike said. Selling and administrative expenses rose 15% to $4B.

3 Passive Income Stocks to Hold for the Next 20 Years {ABT, NKE, TSCO}
by Royston Yang, The Motley Fool • June 21, 2023

...
Nike
Nike (NKE) is well-known for its sports footwear and apparel, which has garnered a worldwide following and engendered strong customer loyalty. The company has posted healthy growth since pandemic-related restrictions were lifted, with revenue rising sharply from $37.4 billion in fiscal 2020 to $46.7 billion in 2022. Net income surged from just $2.5 billion to $6 billion over the same period, demonstrating the resilience of its business model.

Revenue for the first nine months of fiscal 2023 continued to rise 11% year over year to $38.4 billion, but net income saw a 12% year-over-year fall, due to higher expenses and supply-chain bottlenecks. Despite the lower profit, Nike continued to generate healthy free cash flow over all the periods mentioned.

Dividends have been on an unbroken upward trajectory for the past 15 years, rising sevenfold from a quarterly $0.046 in 2007 to $0.34 in 2023. There’s reason to believe Nike can continue to deliver, as its Consumer Direct Acceleration strategy helps it to tap into customer insights to increase engagement and deliver the right products to consumers amid changing preferences.

Nike also has an innovative culture that saw the introduction of new running shoes, such as the Invincible 3 and Pegasus Trail 4, with special features that should continue to endear customers to the brand.

(Reuters) - Nike (NYSE:NKE) is expected to forecast full-year profit below Wall Street estimates, as demand for the sportswear giant's products from wholesalers such as Foot Locker (NYSE:FL) and Hibbett wanes in the United States due to still-high inflation.

At least seven analysts trimmed their fiscal 2024 expectations for Nike's earnings per share since the beginning of June and 10 slashed their price targets on the company's stock, ahead of its fourth-quarter results.

"Coming into this current calendar year ... wholesale orders are weak at the moment," said Morningstar analyst David Swartz, adding that declines in these orders will have a negative impact on Nike.

There have been heavier markdowns within sneakers in the United States, said Jane Hali & Associates senior analyst Jessica Ramirez, adding the U.S. market has been difficult and is quite volatile at the moment.

THE CONTEXT

In March, Nike warned of earnings pressure amid its attempts to get rid of excess inventory through heavy discounts. It still reaped the benefits of rival Adidas (OTC:ADDYY)' disastrous breakup with the musician formerly known as Kanye West last quarter as well as demand for Jordan Retro and LeBron 20.

Sales to wholesale customers, which made up nearly 58% of total Nike Brand revenues in fiscal 2022, have been on the decline as retailers cut back on orders and become more prudent due to a drop in discretionary spending among shoppers.

In May, retailer Foot Locker, which has touted its 'renewed' relationship with Nike, also flagged declining sales, particularly for fashion-oriented sneakers.

Barclays (LON:BARC) analysts noted Nike could see "moderation, and potentially negative, wholesale channel growth" in the fourth quarter.

Still, analysts expect a stronger rebound in China to offset the hit to sales from cooling consumer appetite for higher margin products in the North American region and help retain its top spot as the world's leading sportswear brand.

THE FUNDAMENTALS

** Nike will report fourth-quarter earnings on June 29 after markets close

** Nike is expected to report fourth-quarter revenue of $12.59 billion, a 2.9% rise from a year earlier, according to analysts polled by Refinitiv

** Fourth-quarter profit per share is expected to be 67 cents

** Analysts expect Nike's fiscal 2024 revenue to rise 6.4% to $54.23 billion and earnings per share to be $3.91

WALL STREET SENTIMENT

** Nike shares have risen nearly 3% in the last 12 months

** The average rating of 38 analysts on Nike stock is "buy", with 24 rating it "buy" or higher - Refinitiv

** The median price target is $135

Nike defended at Stifel after recent selloff erased $18 billion in market value

Stifel analysts lowered their price target on Nike (NYSE:NKE) to $135 per share to reflect incremental FX and China pressures.

They noted that shares are down over 10% in August, which prompted higher investor interest in this retailer.

“We view negative revisions from these retailers company-specific and remain comfortable with NKE North America estimates which already presumed wholesale declines against difficult compares,” the analysts said in a note.

Moreover, they highlighted economic issues and cautious consumer sentiment in Greater China as a “greater than anticipated headwind.”

“In the multi-year plan outlined in June 2021, Greater China was planned at a low to mid-teens CAGR and outlined as ~30% of incremental revenue. While other regions have paced ahead of objectives (notably North America +12% vs. M/HSD objective), China remains central to the growth algorithm.”

“Until a more buoyant view on China becomes tangible, the normalized growth algorithm looks more like +HSD vs. more ambitious +LDD aspirations. We note, fiscal stimulus in China could bring a sudden change to sentiment and growth outlook for the region,” they further noted.

Still, the analysts reiterated a Buy rating as they remain constructive on margin prospects.

Nike’s recent stock losses wiped out more than $18 billion in market value.

Marża brutto spadła o 10 punktów bazowych do 44,2%, pod wpływem "wyższych kosztów produktów i niekorzystnych zmian kursów walut obcych netto, w dużej mierze skompensowanych strategicznymi działaniami cenowymi" - podała spółka.
