Adidas hit by China boycott, Vietnam factory closures

BERLIN (Reuters) - Adidas (OTC:ADDYY) felt the impact of a Chinese boycott of Western brands on its second-quarter results on Thursday and is also suffering from the closure of factories in major supplier Vietnam due to rising COVID-19 infections.

The German sportswear company still raised its outlook for full-year sales and profitability as it said it has seen demand recover in China since calls for a boycott in late March, and said it hopes to restore production in Vietnam soon.

But Adidas shares were down 4.1% by 0950 GMT as analysts noted that its growth was lagging rivals Nike (NYSE:NKE) and Puma, which both reported that sales nearly doubled in recent earnings releases.

Second-quarter sales at Adidas rose 52% to 5.077 billion euros ($6 billion), while operating profit came in at 543 million euros, ahead of analysts' average forecasts.

Adidas raised its 2021 outlook to predict sales will grow up to 20%, and net income from continuing operations will reach 1.4-1.5 billion euros. That compared to Puma's forecast for sales to rise at least 20% for 2021.

The new Adidas outlook assumes that the sourcing network will be back to normal by the end of September and that the company will continue to see a steady recovery in Greater China, where sales fell 16% in the second quarter.

Western brands including Adidas faced online attacks in China in late March over past statements saying they would not source cotton from Xinjiang after reports of human rights abuses against Uyghur Muslims. Beijing denies any such abuses.

Adidas already saw online sales return to growth in China in June, Chief Executive Kasper Rorsted told journalists, adding he expects the country to record strong growth for the full year and he welcomed a government drive to promote youth sport.

The company hopes to be able to restart production in Vietnam after the scheduled end of a coronavirus lockdown on Aug. 15 and is working on reallocating production to other centres in the meantime.

Vietnam usually accounts for 28% of Adidas sourcing and its factories mostly make shoes for the company, with a lag of three to four months before products hit the shelves.

The combined impact of supply chain problems, new COVID-19 lockdowns in Asia and tensions with China could amount to more than 500 million euros in lost sales in the second half, said finance chief Harm Ohlmeyer.

Ohlmeyer added he expects Adidas to seal a deal to divest the underperforming Reebok brand by the end of the summer.

Obejmował on zobowiązanie do sprzedaży Reeboka, co nastąpiło w sierpniu, gdy Authentic Brands przejął jednostkę w ramach transakcji o wartości 2,1 mld euro.

BERLIN (Reuters) -German sporting goods maker Adidas (OTC:ADDYY) unexpectedly said on Monday that its Chief Executive Kasper Rorsted would leave his post next year, before his contract is due to run out, and that it had started searching for a successor.

"After three challenging years that were marked by the economic consequences of the COVID-19-pandemic and geo-political tensions, it is now the right time to initiate a CEO transition and pave the way for a restart," supervisory board Chairman Thomas Rabe said in a statement.

The group said Rorsted and its supervisory board had mutually agreed that the CEO would hand over his position during the course of 2023. He will remain in office until a successor has been appointed, it added.

Rorsted, who has been at the helm of Adidas since 2016, said that it had required "huge efforts" to master the challenges of the past few years.

"This is why enabling a restart in 2023 is the right thing to do - both for the company and me personally," he said, but did not elaborate on the reasons why he was leaving. Adidas had in 2020 extended his contract until July 31, 2026.

Shares in Adidas extended losses on the news, trading 3.2% lower by 1150 GMT, underperforming the blue-chip DAX index, which was 2% lower.

Adidas last month cut its 2022 earnings target, citing a slower-than-expected recovery in China from pandemic restrictions.

Adidas Shares Jump After Group Confirms Talks with Possible Rørsted Successor

Investing.com -- Shares in Adidas AG (ETR:ADSGN) surged by more than 22% to the top of the pan-European Stoxx 600 in afternoon trading on Friday after the German sportswear retailer confirmed that it was speaking with a potential successor to current chief executive officer Kasper Rørsted.

In a statement, the Herzogenaurach-based company said it was "in talks" with Bjørn Gulden, outgoing CEO of rival Puma SE (ETR:PUMG), about possibly replacing Rørsted.

The announcement comes after Germany's Manager Magazin first reported that Gulden would leave Puma at the end of 2022 to take over at Adidas.

The world's second largest sports apparel firm has been searching for a new CEO since August when Rørsted unveiled his plan to step down next year.

Meanwhile, Puma said that Gulden has chosen to allow his contract to expire at the end of this year. The group added that chief commercial officer Arne Freundt will take over as its new CEO on January 1.

Shares in Puma fell by about 3%.
