Hyundai raises hydrogen game as new trucks roll into Europe

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - South Korea's Hyundai Motor plans to ship a new series of fuel-cell trucks to Europe later this year, turning up the heat on rivals in a battle to test the viability of hydrogen-powered heavy goods transport.

A new class of the Xcient Hyundai truck, equipped with more efficient fuel cells with longer life-span, is due to arrive in Europe in the fourth quarter, said Mark Freymueller, CEO of Hyundai Hydrogen Mobility (HHM).

Hydrogen lags electric batteries in the green transport stakes because it is more expensive, but proponents say for long-haul transport hydrogen-powered trucks have the advantage because they have a greater range.

HHM, a joint venture between Hyundai and Swiss hydrogen company H2 Energy, has been renting out "green" hydrogen trucks to commercial clients in Switzerland since last October in the world's most advanced pilot in the field.

Oprócz Hyundaia plany opracowania własnych chipów ogłosiły też General Motors (NYSE: GM) i Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA).

SEOUL (Reuters) -South Korea's Hyundai Motor Co forecast on Tuesday its vehicle production would rebound in the first half of this year as a global chip shortage is expected to ease gradually from the second quarter.

"The normalization of auto chip supply and demand is expected in the third quarter, when the capacity of semiconductor companies is expected to rise," Executive Vice President Seo Gang Hyun said on Hyundai's conference call.

The shortage will continue in the first quarter due to the spread of the Omicron variant, Seo said, adding it was the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic in Southeast Asia and resulting chip sourcing troubles that pushed Hyundai's sales to less than the targeted 4 million vehicles in 2021.

Southeast Asia is central to the supply of basic chips that drive the world's cars, smartphones and home devices, with Malaysia's chip assembly industry accounting for more than a tenth of a global trade worth over $200 billion. COVID-related lockdowns in the region have disrupted several industries since last year.

Hyundai said it expects a 20% sales jump in its biggest market, North America, in 2022.

Hyundai and its affiliate Kia Corp, together among the world's top 10 automakers by sales, have forecast a 12.1% jump in their combined global sales for 2022, after their sales fell almost 4% short of a target of 6.92 million vehicles last year due to the chip shortages.

Hyundai posted a nearly 50% drop in its profit for the quarter ended December, significantly short of analysts' estimate, mainly due to the payment of corporate taxes.

It reported a net profit of 547 billion won ($456 million), versus 1.1 trillion won a year earlier. That compared with an average analyst forecast of 1.5 trillion won compiled by Refinitiv SmartEstimate.

HIGHER PRICES, OMICRON

Analysts warn that soaring raw material prices, component shortages and logistical bottlenecks caused by the pandemic are likely to further drive up costs in the current quarter.

"It is still difficult to forecast how the chip shortage will pan out ... also there will be other uncertainties involving the spread of the Omicron variant and potential issues related to Ukraine tensions," said Lee Jae-il, an analyst at Eugene Investment & Securities.

Japanese automakers Toyota Motor (NYSE:TM) Corp and Honda Motor Co Ltd have said they plan to curb their production this month due to rising COVID cases and part supply issues.

As supply chain and distribution disruptions continue, delaying deliveries and production, analysts expect Hyundai to raise vehicle prices to mitigate the impact.

Major automakers and dealers, such as Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) Inc and Honda Motor Company (NYSE:HMC), have already raised car prices https://www.reuters.com/world/the-great ... 2021-08-10 over the past year.

Shares in Hyundai Motor fell 1.5% as of 0616 GMT, versus the benchmark KOSPI's 2.7% fall.

Hyundai Motor's union in S.Korea votes to strike after stalled negotiations

SEOUL (Reuters) -Hyundai Motor Co's unionised workers in South Korea voted for a possible strike for the first time in four years over demands for higher wages and anger that management was prioritising overseas investment.

The union, one of the biggest in the country with more than 46,000 members, said on Friday that 81.63% of its voting union members had approved strike action unless the company accept their demands.

If the union does strike, other industries could follow suit, threatening to slow South Korea's manufacturing-reliant economy, which last month saw exports grow at their slowest pace in more than 1-1/2 years.

The union is seeking a minimum basic monthly pay increase of 165,200 won ($127) and a performance pay equating to 30% of Hyundai's 2022 net profit, as soaring inflation cuts into workers' wages.

It is also demanding Hyundai invest in the country to support new businesses including urban air mobility, purpose-built vehicles and electric vehicle-related auto parts manufacturing.

"Inflation has been speeding up even after we came up with our demand, so many of us feel that our wages need to keep up with this soaring inflation," a union member at Hyundai Motor told Reuters on condition of anonymity.

Negotiations between Hyundai's union and management, which started in May, stalled last month.

UNION DEMANDS

The union's demands come after Hyundai Motor Group, which houses Hyundai Motor and Kia Corp, announced more than $10 billion investment plans in the United States by 2025 including $5.5 billion EV and battery facilities in Georgia.

The auto group said in May it would also invest 21 trillion won ($16 billion) through 2030 to expand its EV business in South Korea.

In March, Hyundai Motor said it targets to achieve a 7% market share in the global EV market by 2030, with an annual sales target of 1.87 million vehicles.

Analysts say as the union's new leader has adopted an aggressive negotiating stance, the chances of Hyundai facing a partial strike this year could be more likely than last year, putting at risk its revenue growth just as a chips shortage used in cars is expected to ease in coming months.

"If the union decides to go on strike, Hyundai would face inevitable production output loss, when they need to ramp up production to meet strong car demand," said Cho Soo-hong, an analyst at NH Investment & Securities.

South Korea's economy was already dealt a blow in June when unionised truckers went on a nationwide strike for more than a week to protest soaring fuel costs, action that crippled ports and industrial hubs.

Annual inflation accelerated to 5.4% in May, the fastest in nearly 14 years, adding to the risk of weaker domestic demand in Asia's fourth-largest economy.

Shares of Hyundai Motor closed down 0.3%, versus the benchmark KOSPI's 1.2% fall.

Hyundai Mobis, an affiliate of automaker Hyundai Motor Co, said in a regulatory filing it aims to hold a board meeting in September to approve plans to separate the businesses, expected to be launched in November.

The new units will be in charge of manufacturing operations, including facility and labour management, while the central management of the company will be focusing on securing future mobility technologies, as well as developing new products.

Shares of Hyundai Mobis closed down 3% at their lowest since July 13 while the benchmark KOSPI fell 0.3%, before Hyundai Mobis disclosed its plans.

Kia i Hyundai stoją przed pozwem zbiorowym w związku z falą kradzieży samochodów

Hyundai Motor and SK On to build $1.9 billion JV battery plant in U.S. -report

SEOUL (Reuters) - South Korea's Hyundai Motor Co and SK On plan to invest about 2.5 trillion won ($1.88 billion) to build a new joint venture battery factory in the United States, the Korea Economic Newspaper reported on Friday.

Hyundai Motor and SK On, the battery unit of energy group SK Innovation Co Ltd, are expected to sign a memorandum of understanding on the investment next week, the newspaper said, citing unidentified auto and battery sources.

Targeted to start in the first quarter of 2026, the plant aims to have an initial annual production capacity of about 20 gigawatt hours (GWh), enough to power about 300,000 electric vehicles (EVs), the newspaper said.

"Nothing has been decided on this matter," an official at SK On told Reuters. Hyundai Motor was not immediately available for comment when contacted by Reuters.

The report added the new factory was likely to be located in Georgia, near Hyundai Motor Group's new EV plant.

The South Korean auto group broke ground on a $5.54 billion EV and battery plant in Georgia last month, aiming to begin commercial production in the first half of 2025 with an annual capacity of 300,000 vehicles.

SEOUL (Reuters) - South Korea's Hyundai Motor Co is in talks with a Kazakhstan company over the sale of its manufacturing plant in Russia, South Korean media reported on Thursday.

Many factories in Russia have suspended production and furloughed workers due to shortages of high-tech equipment because of sanctions and an exodus of Western manufacturers since Moscow invaded Ukraine last year.

The local government in St. Petersburg has been negotiating with Kazakhstan to sell Hyundai's Russia plant, Yonhap news agency reported, citing a TASS report.

Yonhap reported that negotiations to sell Hyundai's plant in St. Petersburg to an auto-related company in Astana, Kazakhstan are in the final stage, citing an unnamed source. The deal could be signed as early as June, it said.

Hyundai Motor suspended operations at its Russian factory last March.

Hyundai Motor was not immediately available for comment when contacted by Reuters.

Hyundai Motor, which together with affiliate Kia Corp 000270.KS is among the world's top 10 biggest automakers by sales, builds about 200,000 vehicles per year in Russia, about 4% of its global production capacity.

Hyundai Motor Co. (KS:005380) announced Tuesday that the South Korean automaker has finalized a $5 billion electric vehicle (EV) battery joint venture in the U.S., boosting electrification efforts in the country.

Hyundai and partner SK on, a battery unit of SK Innovation Co. Ltd. (KS:096770), will set up a new battery manufacturing plant in the state of Georgia, the companies said, formalizing an earlier provisional agreement.

The announcement was made as South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol is in Washington to meet President Joe Biden on the first state visit to the U.S. by a South Korean leader in 12 years. Accompanying Yoon on the trip are top executives of some of South Korea's biggest companies, including Hyundai Motor Group Executive Chair Eui-sun Chung.

Hyundai also reported its first quarter net profit had more than doubled, exceeding expectations. Its shares rose as much as 5% to a seven-month high after the announcements and as the automaker also initiated steps to improve shareholder returns.

Hyundai and Kia also said on Tuesday they planned to invest a combined 1.05 trillion won to acquire more shares in autonomous mobility firm 42dot Inc to maintain control and increase its operational competitiveness.
