(Reuters) -Costco Wholesale Corp topped Wall Street estimates for quarterly results on Thursday, helped by strong demand for its fresh food, candies and fuel offerings despite rising inflation.

However, the company's gross margins for the reported quarter were squeezed as it battles higher freight and labor costs due to rising inflation and global supply chain snags, sending its shares down about 3% in extended trading.

Costco (NASDAQ:COST) benefits from strong spending by well-to-do Americans with club memberships even as lower-income consumers spend lesser, hit by rising prices of everything from edible oils to gas due to the Ukraine war and supply chain disruptions.

Casey's General Stores (CASY) was mixed on analyst forecasts Tuesday afternoon. And Ollie's Bargain Outlet (OLLI) missed results Wednesday morning. Expectations: Wall Street predicted the wholesaler's earnings would climb 5% to $3.12 per share. And sales were seen growing 16% to $58.36 billion, according to the FactSet consensus. Lower Sharp consensus estimates had revenue growing 9% to $54.86 billion.

Results: Costco's earnings rose 3% to $3.07 per share on 8% revenue growth to $53.44 billion.

Same store sales rose 6.6% year-over-year but e-commerce sales fell 3.7% for the period.

Costco reports Q2 EPS beat, revenues miss; analysts say growth outlook remains positive

Costco (NASDAQ:COST) reported mixed Q2 results. EPS came in at $3.30, better than the consensus estimate of $3.21. Revenue grew 6.5% year-over-year to $54.24 billion, missing the consensus estimate of $55.55B as consumers are limiting their spending on discretionary items because of the continued high inflation.

Shares are down 2.5% in premarket Friday trading.

Q2 comparable sales increased 5.2% (or 6.8% excluding the impacts from changes in gasoline prices and foreign exchange), with U.S. up 5.7%, Canada up 3.5%, and Other International up 3.8%.

Bernstein analysts cut the price target by $18 to $568 per share after the company delivered a "solid" quarter.

"We continue to like the outlook, especially for med- to long-term investors... The growth outlook remains positive," they wrote to clients.

Oppenheimer analysts believe the move lower in COST shares after results is "primarily due to the lack of a membership fee hike, which had been anticipated with this report."*

"Consistent with our playbook lately, we would take advantage of weakness vs. chasing strength as Street numbers still appear high to us. Interest income is a bit of a wildcard in our modeling due to the potential for a special dividend down the road, and we have modeled conservatively from a longer-term perspective. We still expect a membership fee hike and special dividend in coming quarters," the analysts told the broker's clients.

Perspektywy wzrostu pozostają pozytywne" - napisali do klientów.

Analitycy Oppenheimer uważają, że ruch w dół akcji COST po wynikach jest "przede wszystkim spowodowany brakiem podwyżki opłat członkowskich, która była oczekiwana wraz z tym raportem".

Costco initiated with Outperform at William Blair
William Blair initiated coverage on Costco Wholesale (NASDAQ:COST) with an Outperform rating, noting the company is well-positioned in an uncertain environment.

The firm believes that Costco's strong value proposition, engaged membership, efficient operations, and growth potential will drive further market share expansion. Citi analysts told investors in a note Friday that there was "nothing too concerning" in Costco's (NASDAQ:COST) May sales data.

"May comps of +3.3% decelerated vs April +4.3%. Non-foods still weighed on results while Food and Sundries were +HSD and Fresh +MSD," explained the analysts. "Food and Sundries and Fresh price inflation decelerated from April, and Fresh inflation is now in a +LSD range while Food and Sundries remain stickier in the +MSD-HSD range."

The firm still believes COST is well-positioned to navigate these inflationary times, but trading at ~19x F24 EBITDA, they feel the risk/reward is balanced and, as a result, maintained a Neutral rating and $530 price target on the stock.

Analysts at Wells Fargo, who have an Equal Weight rating and $475 price target on Costco, said the retailer's May sales reaccelerated following recent weakness.

"COST's comp momentum reaccelerated in May, breaking its recent downward trend," said the analysts. However, they too noted that "while encouraging, headwinds for the stock remain," the risk/reward is balanced.

Costco shares dip after reporting same-store sales in June; analysts remain positive

Investing.com -- Costco Wholesale Corp (NASDAQ:COST) shares were dipping after the retailer reported sales for June.

Warehouse retailer Costco Wholesale reported June net sales of $22.86 billion, an increase of 0.4% from the same time last year.

The company said that for the 44 weeks ended July 2, it reported net sales of $196.93 billion, an increase of 4.6% from one year ago.

Shares fell 0.8% in pre-open Friday trading.

June comparable sales, excluding the impacts from changes in gasoline prices and foreign exchange, rose 3.0%. It also said U.S. comparable sales growth excluding those impacts was 2.0%, and e-commerce was down 0.4%.

Stifel analysts reiterated a Buy rating and a $545 per share price target on COST stock as June results are "largely consistent with recent trends showing Costco continues to outperform most peers."

Telsey Advisory Group analysts said the results were better than expected, driven by the 4.2% increase in traffic.

"Costco's better than anticipated June comp reflects good execution and its value appeal to a cost-conscious consumer. We expect Costco to remain a share gainer, with its value-focused merchandising and high member loyalty (~125MM members). In FY23 and FY24, Costco should continue to generate HSD-LDD EPS growth, driven by a LSD-MSD comp, MSD-HSD membership fee income growth, leverage of customer data, and effective management of merchandising and costs," they said.

COST shares are up more than 17% so far this year.

Re: Costco NASDAQ: COST markety typu MAKRO, przywilej członkowski

Postautor: slayer74 » 26 wrz 2023 12:29

Costco Wholesale (NASDAQ:COST), the multinational corporation, is preparing to release its fourth fiscal quarter earnings after market close today, Tuesday. The report will cover a three-month period ending in August. Analysts predict adjusted earnings of $4.79 per share from sales totaling $77.7 billion, according to estimates.

The company has been consistent in providing monthly sales updates for 52 weeks of its 2022-2023 fiscal year. As such, AB Bernstein analyst Dean Rosenblum suggests that revenue surprises are unlikely. However, a slight underperformance compared to expectations might be possible due to cautious consumer behavior and sluggish comparable-store sales, which have been slowing steadily over the previous four quarters.

Comparable-store sales increased by 14.9% in the quarter ending May 2022, but by May 2023, the rise was just 3.5%. They are expected to increase by a similar percentage this quarter, analysts predict. Despite a slow start to the quarter, sales improved over the summer months, according to Evercore ISI's Greg Melich, which could result in a robust report.

In addition to financial performance, analysts suggest that other news may overshadow Costco's earnings report. One significant update could be a potential rise in Costco's annual membership fee—an action Wall Street analysts believe is overdue. Historically, Costco has increased fees approximately every five or six years with the most recent hike in 2017.

Currently, Costco charges $60 for a basic membership and $120 for an executive membership. Rosenblum suggests that now food inflation has somewhat eased, Costco may seize the opportunity to plan for a fee increase. If implemented, this move could stimulate an uptick in the company's stock value.

Costco's shares have already seen a surge this year with a 22% increase compared to the S&P 500's rise of about 13%. Melich, who rates the stock as Outperform with a price target of $600, includes Costco in his top five picks.

Analysts Greg Melich and Dean Rosenblum on Tuesday suggested that a potential increase in Costco Wholesale (NASDAQ:COST)'s membership fees could have a substantial influence on the company's stock value. The company's stock has already seen a 22% gain this year, and the proposed changes may further affect its trajectory.

The prediction takes into account Costco's tendency to raise its membership fees every five to six years. The current membership costs stand at $60 for basic and $120 for executive memberships. If the company follows its regular pattern, it could be due for another fee hike soon.

In addition to the potential fee increase, analysts also considered the company's regular monthly sales updates in their forecast. They noted a decline in comparable-store sales, which could potentially be offset by an increase in membership fees.

Furthermore, data from Placer.ai indicated an increase in customer visits during the summer months. This surge in foot traffic may have influenced the analysts' predictions about the potential impact of a membership fee increase on Costco's stock value.

The upcoming period will likely provide more clarity on whether Costco will indeed raise its membership fees and how such a move could affect its stock performance.

Investing.com -- Costco Wholesale (NASDAQ:COST) posted a 4.5% increase in comparable store sales in September amid stronger growth beyond its core domestic markets in the U.S. and Canada.

Shares in the membership-only retailer were hovering around the flatline in U.S. premarket trading.

In a statement late on Wednesday, Costco reported a 3.2% and 6.7% jump in comparable sales in the U.S. and Canada, respectively. Other international climbed 10% in the five weeks through Oct. 1.

Net sales rose to $22.75 billion in the five-week period ended Oct. 1, an uptick of 6% from $21.46 billion last year. E-commerce sales were also up 3.7% during the period.

The numbers come after the Issaquah, Washington-based company posted better-than-anticipated revenue and profit in its fiscal fourth quarter, as stable demand for essential items like fresh food offset a slump in customer appetite for big-ticket discretionary items that stemmed from elevated inflation and higher interest rates.

Speaking to analysts last month after unveiling the three-month results, Chief Financial Officer Richard Galanti noted that traffic has continued to "do very well," adding that sales have been solid for items like Christmas trees and toys.
