Royal Mail slumps to half-year loss amid strike actions

Investing.com -- Britain's Royal Mail has posted a half-year adjusted operating loss of £219 million (£1 = $1.1903), matching a warning issued in October, as the more than 500-year-old business faces the impact from strikes and weak parcel volumes.

The delivery service also confirmed a prior warning that it will slump to a full-year adjusted operating loss of around £350M - £450M.

Talks over pay and working patterns have been ongoing between Royal Mail management and its largest labor union, the Communications Workers Union, with the firm flagging that it stands to lose £1M per day from the industrial action.

Negotiations have been extended to try to avoid further strikes before Christmas. The CWU has said it is planning a walk-out on November 24, which Royal Mail has warned could cause further damage to its operations.

Royal Mail said on Thursday that discussions will "cease" if further industrial action goes ahead.

The labor battle has subsequently led the company to estimate that it will need to announce between 5,000 to 6,000 redundancies by the end of August 2023. Around 5,000 full-time roles are expected to be eliminated by March next year and about 10,000 by August on a rolling 12-month basis.

Meanwhile, International Distributions Services PLC (LON:IDSI) - the U.K. multinational that also includes Royal Mail's subsidiary GLS - swung to a loss in its first half.

IDS reported a loss before tax of £127 million in the 26-week period ended on September 25, down from a profit of £315M in the corresponding timeframe last year. Revenue dropped 3.9% year-on-year to £5.84 billion.

London-listed shares in IDS edged higher in early trading, but have fallen by more than 43% over the last one-year period.

Royal Mail owner International Distribution Services was the biggest loser on the FTSE 250 after JPMorgan slashed its price target on the shares to 250p from 285p.

Royal Mail faces significant challenges in the industry.

Royal Mail’s parent, International Distributions Systems (LON: IDS) share price pulled back sharply on Monday after analysts at JP Morgan downgraded it. The stock dropped to a low of 219p, which was much lower than this month’s high of 250p.

Royal Mail woes continue
IDS, the parent company of Royal Mail Group, has been a company under pressure in the past few months. Demand for both parcels and mail has continued thinning while the company’s cost of doing business has remained at an elevated level.

Data published last week showed that UK’s inflation rebounded in February as the cost of most items rose. Higher inflation, especially in the energy sector, hits Royal Mail hard considering that the company spends a lot of money on fuel expenses.

At the same time, the company has been pushed to hike wages even as its profitability remains on edge. In fact, the management is considering separating its Royal Mail business with its other profitable global logistics segment.

Royal Mail has also attracted the attention of regulators. Last week, the company was referred to Ofcom by a committee of parliament for failing to deliver letters six days per week. This is one of the top challenges that the company faces in that the firm must deliver letters six days per week and even in some of the most unprofitable places in the country.

Therefore, there is a likelihood that the IDS share price will continue falling in the coming month as its profitability remains on edge. Another key challenge is that Royal Mail is one of the most bloated companies in the UK, with over 162k workers. This explains why analysts at JP Morgan decided to slash its estimate from 285p to 250p.

Obrazek

IDS stock price has done relatively well this year even as the company remains at risk. The stock has jumped by over 11% from the lowest level this year. However, recently, the shares have moved slightly below the 25-period and 50-period moving averages. A closer look shows that it has formed a head and shoulders pattern.

Therefore, the shares will likely have a bearish breakout as sellers target the key level at 200p, which is about 11% below the current level. A move above the key resistance point at 235p will invalidate the bearish view.

Royal Mail owner International Distributions Services was down after saying it swung to a hefty full-year loss after a bruising year-long battle with unions over pay and conditions. Royal Mail posted an adjusted operating loss of £419m, compared with a profit of £416m due to industrial action by the Communication Workers Union, lower test kit volumes and a weaker online retail market.

Company ekes out first quarter revenue growth
Keeps adjusted profit target for year to March 2024
Group could be vulnerable to a break-up
Shares in Royal Mail owner International Distribution Services (IDS) have been on a tear over the last month, up nearly 40% following settlement of industrial action which has brought the company to its knees.

Further positive news was delivered on Thursday after the company said it remained on track to turn an adjusted operating profit in the year to March 2024 and appointed Martin Seidenberg (currently head of overseas delivery division GLS) as group chief executive. The shares gained 3.3% to 275.8p.

CONTINUED GROWTH AT GLS

Global Logistics Services registered a 7.4% increase in revenue for the first quarter to 30 June with volumes up 4%, slightly ahead of expectations and some 58% above pre-pandemic trading. On a like-for-like basis growth was 5.3% in Euros.

Growth offset the impact of lower fuel surcharges and weaker freight revenues amid a ‘mixed’ economic backdrop across different markets.

The company said it was making investments in automation and other productivity measures to mitigate the anticipated impact on margins.

Is there hidden value in Royal Mail owner International Distribution Services?

While addressed letter volumes were more robust than anticipated and, aided by price actions, led to 1.7% growth in revenue, volumes remain around a third below pre-pandemic levels.

The company argued this highlighted the need for the government and the regulator to take ‘urgent action’.

Growth in GLS and letters pushed group revenue 0.3% higher for the quarter to £3 billion.

COULD THE GROUP BE BROKEN UP?

Czech billionaire and IDS’s largest shareholder Daniel Kretinsky has reportedly threatened to put the group into administration if the dispute with the unions could not be settled.

Head of financial analysis at AJ Bell Danni Hewson asked whether the end of the dispute could presage more corporate activity.

Hewson commented: ‘Royal Mail owner International Distributions Services is at a critical juncture, and it feels telling the company has appointed the head of its overseas delivery operation GLS to lead the broader group.

‘With strikes no longer clouding the outlook, would now be a good time to consider splitting the two businesses?

‘It seems likely GLS could attract a higher market valuation as an individual business, its attractions no longer obscured by the legacy issues facing Royal Mail.

‘The latter include struggles in pushing through efficiency improvements, large pension liabilities and a fractious relationship with its workforce.’
