(Reuters) - Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE:BRKa) Inc bought another 9.6 million shares of Occidental Petroleum Corp (NYSE:OXY), boosting its stake to 16.3% as the oil company's shares come off the year's high.

The purchases were made over the past week and cost about $529 million, Berkshire said in a regulatory filing on Wednesday. These come on top of a $336 million share purchase by Berkshire last month in the oil company, and $7 billion in purchases earlier this year.

Following the purchases, Berkshire now owns about 152.7 million Occidental shares worth about $8.52 billion based on Occidental stock's Wednesday close, which is down over 21% since it touched its year's high in May.

However, Occidental's share prices are currently up over 90% this year, after more than doubling, as they benefited from Berkshire's purchases and rising oil prices following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Berkshire is the largest individual shareholder in Occidental. The company also owns options to buy 83.9 million Occidental shares, which if exercised, would bring its stake to over 25%.

Berkshire has been on a spending spree in 2022. It spent $51.1 billion on equities in the first quarter, including an increased $25.9 billion stake in oil company Chevron Corp. (NYSE:CVX)

Analysts have viewed Occidental and Chevron as a way for Berkshire to benefit from rising oil prices following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE:BRKa) continues to add to its Occidental Petroleum (NYSE:OXY) position on recent sector weakness related to fears about a recession.

Late Thursday, Berkshire disclosed buying another 4.3 million shares worth about $250 million based on current prices.

The latest purchase brings the firm's stake to 179,741,891 shares. Berkshire also owns warrants that cover another 83,858,848 shares, with an exercise price of $59.62, and 100,000 preferred shares.

Wall Street analysts have recently speculated that Buffett and Berkshire could buy the remaining two-thirds of Occidental that they don't own once the company becomes investment grade.

Shares of Occidental are down 22% from their late May 2022 peak.

This Buffett Stock is a Buy Today

by Tony Daltorio, Investors Alley • July 15, 2022

Warren Buffett has done it again… Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.A, BRK.B) put $232 million into the Chinese battery and electric vehicle company BYD (BYDDY) in 2008. That stake is now worth a cool $7.7 billion, making it one of Berkshire’s most lucrative investments.

Meanwhile, Elon Musk has heaped scorn on electric vehicle company BYD. Back in 2011, he said “Have you seen their car? I don’t think they have a great product.”

But today, it is Buffett and BYD that are having the last laugh.

Investing.com - Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE:BRKa) (NYSE:BRKb)) reported increased operating earnings in Q2, beating on both the operating earnings and revenue line, as the core business outperformed amidst a volatile stock market.

The Warren Buffett-led conglomerate posted operating earnings of $9.3B, or $6,315 per A share, vs. estimates of $4,756 per A share. The net earnings per share was negative at -$29,756/share, reflecting the unrealized losses in Berkshire’s equities portfolio especially, as four of its biggest five positions – Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL), Chevron (NYSE:CVX), American Express (NYSE:AXP), and Bank of America (NYSE:BAC) – all dropped in value despite no signs Berkshire sold any shares. Coca Cola rose slightly in Q2 and pulled back into the top 5 of Berkshire Hathaway equity holdings.

While Berkshire Hathaway’s 13F form for Q2, which will show their updated equity holdings, has yet to be released, the company’s equity buying slowed considerably in Q2, as Buffett and co only added $3.8B in net equity purchases, vs. the $41.4B they added in Q1. Berkshire’s net buying of treasury bills also slowed, as they added only $7.6B in treasuries net of sales and redemptions, vs. $14.4B in Q1.

The share buyback front also slowed for the quarter, as Berkshire Hathaway only repurchased $1B worth of shares, after spending $3.2B on buybacks in Q1. Given shares closed the quarter near their year to date lows, the buyback may be more on watch for Q3, amid questions of whether Berkshire and Buffett’s confidence in the economy waned as inflation persisted and drumbeats of a pending recession grew in volume in recent months.

Berkshire Hathaway’s operating business showed little sign of slowing down in the quarter. Berskhire’s insurance underwriting business returned to earnings growth in Q2, up 54% even as the Geico business declined due to, “increases in claims frequencies and severities and lower reductions of ultimate claim estimates for prior years’ losses.” The auto insurer posted a loss of $487M in pre-tax earnings, an increase on losses in Q1.

Berkshire’s railroad businesses’ continued to outpace inflation, with earnings growing 9.8% on the quarter to offset increased fuel costs. Berkshire’s utilities business saw revenue growth of 7% mostly canceled out by increased costs, as net earnings only grew 3.5%.

The manufacturing, service, and retailing businesses grew 8.2%, a slowdown from Q1 growth but still significant. The filing stated that, “While customer demand for products and services was relatively good in the first six months of 2022, we continue to experience the negative effects of higher materials, freight, labor and other input costs.”

The building products segment, most tied to real estate, posted 20% revenue growth as “residential home construction in the U.S.” continued to be relatively strong, though the filing noted the risks from rising mortgage rates slowing down homebuilding activity. Berkshire’s real estate brokerage business saw a drop of $51M in earnings, in part due to a decrease in activity in mortgage services.

Berkshire Hathaway closed Friday trading at $439,528.92 on the A shares and $292.07 on the B shares, both down about 2.4% for the year, outpacing the leading indices year to date amidst the rise in energy stocks and the shift to “value stocks” outperformance in 2022.

August 8 (Reuters) - Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE:BRKa) Inc bought more shares of Occidental Petroleum Corp (NYSE:OXY), surpassing the 20% stake where it could record some of the oil company's earnings with its own and potentially add billions of dollars of profit.

In a regulatory filing on Monday night, Berkshire said it paid about $391 million for nearly 6.7 million Occidental shares between Aug. 4 and Aug. 8.

The purchases gave Berkshire 188.4 million Occidental shares, or 20.2% of reported shares outstanding, worth $11.3 billion.

A 20% stake would let Berkshire report its proportionate share of Houston-based Occidental's earnings with operating results, through the so-called equity method of accounting.

Berkshire nonetheless could contend that its accounting for Occidental should remain unchanged because its stake is passive.

Analysts on average expect Occidental to generate $10.5 billion of profit this year, according to Refinitiv I/B/E/S.

Buffett's company also owns $10 billion of Occidental preferred stock, which helped finance the 2019 purchase of Anadarko Petroleum (NYSE:APC), and has warrants to buy another 83.9 million common shares for $5 billion.

Some analysts have speculated that Omaha, Nebraska-based Berkshire could eventually bid for all of Occidental.

Buffett's assistant and Occidental did not immediately respond to a request for comment outside market hours.

Berkshire generated $16.3 billion of operating profit in this year's first half.

It uses the equity method of accounting for food company Kraft Heinz (NASDAQ:KHC) Co, where it has a 26.6% stake, and truck stop operator Pilot Travel Centers, where its 38.6% stake is expected to grow to 80% next year.

In contrast, Berkshire accounts normally for its 20.2% stake in American Express Co (NYSE:AXP), restricting its ability to exercise significant influence.

Occidental shares closed at $60.04 on Monday. The share price has more than doubled this year, benefiting from rising oil prices following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Berkshire owns dozens of companies including the BNSF railroad, Geico car insurance and several energy businesses, and stocks including oil company Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX), where it ended June with a $23.7 billion stake.

Big Bet on Occidental Could Be Another Buffett Mistake on Oil, Analyst Warns

It was disclosed on Friday that Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE:BRKa) has received permission from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to buy up to 50% of shares in Occidental Petroleum (NYSE:OXY).

The WSJ reports today that Berkshire hasn’t informed OXY that it plans to acquire a controlling stake in the company. Still, Buffett is likely to have a major influence on OXY given that BRK is OXY’s largest shareholder as it owns a c.20.2% stake.

Moreover, Buffett’s company has warrants to purchase another 83.9 million common shares and 100,000 shares of preferred stock.

The WSJ report adds that some senior executives at Occidental believe Buffett may be interested in acquiring a controlling stake if oil prices fall, which should also bring down the OXY share price.

Occidental shares rallied almost 10% on Friday to push its market cap to over $66 billion. Shares closed at $71.29, already bringing hefty profits to Buffett as he was previously acquiring shares at a price in the range of $50 to $60.

A BofA analyst hiked the price target on OXY shares to $80 from $77 but warned that Warren Buffett may be bidding against himself by buying more OXY shares. If Buffett is simply bullish on oil prices, the analyst argues he has better options elsewhere given the run-up in OXY shares.

“Our standing position is that value isn’t enough to realize upside we look for catalysts to force recognition of value. BRK’s role as the ‘rate of change’ agent may have been overlooked but their disclosed interest may continue to squeeze short positions, recent outperformance may mean the risk from here is that BRK ends up bidding against itself,” the analyst wrote in a client note.

Finally, the analyst reminds clients of Buffett’s failed bet on ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COP) back in 2007, which was also based on the belief that oil prices would only increase over the long term.

Obrazek

W 2000 r., tuż przed pęknięciem bańki internetowej, wynosił on 2,11, a w 2007 r., przed globalnym kryzysem finansowym, sięgał 1,52. Po wybuchu tamtego kryzysu wskaźnik Buffetta spadł w okolice 0,8, by w 2011 r. wrócić na poziom z czasów przedkryzysowej bańki. Tuż przed pandemią Covid-19 dochodził do 2, a w czasie krachu z marca 2020 r. spadł do poziomu zbliżonego do 1,6. Bardzo szybko się jednak odbił i jeszcze w 2020 r. przekroczył poziom z czasów bańki internetowej.

– Inwestorzy, którzy kupują akcje, gdy wskaźnik dochodzi do 2,0, igrają z ogniem – ostrzegał Buffett w 2001 r.

Jego wskaźnik nie jest perfekcyjny. Porównuje on bowiem obecną kapitalizację rynku akcji z PKB z poprzedniego kwartału.

Berkshire Hathaway Trims Stake in BYD by Over 3M Hong Kong Listed Shares

Warren Buffett’s investment firm, Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE:BRKb) has sold 3.297 million Hong Kong-listed shares of electric vehicle maker BYD (HK:1211) for $71.35 million Reuters reported, citing a Hong Kong Stock Exchange filing.

The filing to the Hong Kong Stock Exchange showed that the sale lowered Berkshire's holdings in BYD's total issued H shares to 17.92% on November 1 from 18.22%.

The sell-off comes as Citi Bank set the price target on the stock at 640 Hong Kong dollars - which on Tuesday would have given an upside of a full 260%, on Friday it is an upside of 225%. Citi writes in its note that it believes BYD will increase sales of "new energy" cars by 137 percent from this year's 1 million cars.

BYD shares have fallen 25% on the Hong Kong stock exchange so far this year.

Buffett's Berkshire sheds large portion of US Bancorp stake

(Reuters) - Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE:BRKa) Inc, the conglomerate run by billionaire Warren Buffett, said on Thursday it has shed more than 91 million US Bancorp (NYSE:USB) shares since the start of the year, reducing its stake in the fifth-largest U.S. bank by 63%.

In a regulatory filing, Berkshire said it owned just over 53 million U.S. Bancorp shares, for a 3.6% stake, on Oct. 31, down from 144.7 million shares, or 9.8%, on Dec. 31, 2021.

Berkshire began investing in the Minneapolis-based bank in 2006, according to regulatory filings.

It not did give a reason for the reduction or say if it has sold more stock in November. Buffett does not discuss his stock purchases and sales while they are ongoing.

U.S. Bancorp and Buffett's assistant did not immediately respond to requests for comment after market hours.

Shares of U.S. Bancorp closed Thursday at $44.87. They have fallen 20% this year.

Banks and other financial services companies normally comprise a large percentage of Berkshire's equity portfolio, which totaled $306.2 billion as of Sept. 30.

The Omaha, Nebraska-based company ended September with a $31.2 billion stake in Bank of America Corp (NYSE:BAC), the second-largest U.S. bank, and recently held large stakes in American Express Co (NYSE:AXP) and Bank of New York Mellon (NYSE:BK) Corp.

It has in recent years also held and sold multi-billion-dollar stakes in Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS), JPMorgan Chase & Co (NYSE:JPM) and Wells Fargo (NYSE:WFC) & Co.

Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) is Berkshire's largest common stock investment. Berkshire owned $126.5 billion of the iPhone maker's shares on Sept. 30.

On Nov. 14, Berkshire is expected in a regulatory filing to disclose more information about its U.S.-listed stock holdings.

Buffett, 92, has run Berkshire since 1965. The conglomerate also owns several dozen companies including the BNSF railroad, Geico auto insurer, energy and industrial businesses, and consumer products such as Dairy Queen ice cream.

Warren Buffett Just Bought 60 Million Shares of This Tech Stock
by Michael Byrne, The Motley Fool • November 20, 2022
Warren Buffett is widely hailed as the greatest value investor of all time. So when he and his team at Berkshire Hathaway add a new stock to their portfolio, it’s worth looking under the hood and finding out more.

A look at Berkshire’s holdings reveals a host of sensible, inexpensively valued bank and financial stocks along with a handful of consumer staples and energy names. While Buffett has long had a penchant for financials, he hasn’t been particularly noted as a tech investor, aside from his investment in Apple, which has become Berkshire’s top holding.

But Berkshire’s 13F filing just came out for the third quarter and shows that Buffett and his team initiated a large position in one tech stock: Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSM). Let’s take a look at why the Oracle of Omaha bought Taiwan Semiconductor, and if this is a good stock for investors to follow him into.
