(Reuters) - Qualcomm (NASDAQ:QCOM) Corp on Tuesday announced deals to supply chips to automakers Volvo Group, Honda Motor Co Ltd and Renault SA (OTC:RNLSY), accelerating its push to partner with legacy automotive firms digitizing their product lines.

The San Diego, California, company once known for its mobile phone chips has created a range of automotive offerings, from self-driving car brains to chips that operate digital dashboards and infotainment systems. But the chips are all aimed at the same goal of helping automakers transform their vehicles into rolling computers that can be updated over the air with paid upgrades that generate revenue for carmakers long after a vehicle has left dealer lots, a business model pioneered by Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) Inc.

At the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Qualcomm said it has reached a deal with Geely Holding-backed brands Volvo and Polestar to use Qualcomm's "Snapdragon Cockpit" chips and an operating system from Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL) Inc's Google in vehicles starting later this year.

The deal will allow Volvo’s electric SUV, which is to begin production this year, to tap into hands-free use of Google Assistant and navigation with Google Maps. The companies said that future upgrades will be sent out over the air.

Qualcomm also said that Honda will start using its "cockpit" chips in vehicles that will hit roads in 2023. Qualcomm also said Renault (PA:RENA) has agreed to use its automotive technology, but did not give specifics of which chips or when vehicles using them would arrive.

Qualcomm said on Tuesday that it has created a new chip and system for computer vision, which uses cameras on the car and artificial intelligence to help with safety functions like automatic lane control. The new "Snapdragon Ride Vision System" uses software from Arriver, which was part of Qualcomm's $4.5 billion purchase of automotive technology firm Veoneer (NYSE:VNE) Inc last year.

Qualcomm, lider w dziedzinie procesorów do smartfonów i urządzeń mobilnych poinformował o wstrzymaniu sprzedaży swoich produktów do Rosji.

Amerykańska firma Qualcomm została wywołana do tablicy przez ukraińskiego ministra ds. transformacji cyfrowej. Mykhaiło Fedorow wezwał na Twitterze firmę do całkowitego zaprzestania działalności w Rosji, sugerując, że produkty firmy nadal są możliwe do kupienia w tym kraju.

Qualcomm wycofuje się z Rosji
Firma odpowiedziała na tweeta, że stwierdzenia w nim zawarte są nieprawdziwe. Qualcomm poinformował, że zaprzestał działania w Rosji i wstrzymał sprzedaż i dostawy swoich produktów rosyjskim firmom zgodnie z zasadami narzuconymi przez sankcje ekonomiczne.

Dodatkowo firma poinformowała, że publicznie wezwała do zaprzestania działań wojennych w Ukrainie i przekazała dotację na organizacje humanitarne wspierające ofiary i uchodźców.

Ukraiński minister ds. transformacji cyfrowej prowadzi własną kampanię na Twitterze, w ramach której publicznie wzywa największe zachodnie firmy technologiczne do zaprzestania działalności w Rosji. Zazwyczaj argumentuje swoje wpisy emocjonalnymi porównaniami, że w Ukrainie giną ludzie, a firmy nadal pośrednio pomagają Rosji, sprzedając tam swoje produkty.


Po odpowiedzi amerykańskiej firmy ukraiński urzędnik podziękował jej i jednocześnie dodał, że jeśli chciałaby pomóc Ukrainie w walce z Rosją, to może przesłać ukraińskim wojskom i ratownikom medycznym telefony satelitarne.

Mykhaiło Fedorow dodał we wpisie o Qulacommie informacje, że produkty firmy nadal są do kupienia w Rosji. Może to być skutek tego, że Qualcomm nie sprzedaje swoich produktów bezpośrednio do klientów, a znajdują się one w urządzeniach takich jak smartfony.

Wcześniej w ten sposób Fedorow wywierał presję na takie firmy jak Microsoft, Oracle, DJI, Xerox, Globecast, ASUS czy SAP.

Edward Jones analyst Logan Purk upgraded Qualcomm (NASDAQ:QCOM) to Buy from Hold as he believes the current share price doesn’t quite reflect the growth outlook for the chipmaker.

Moreover, Purk placed QCOM stock on the Canadian Equity Income Buy List. He believes the pullback in Qualcomm share price presents an “attractive buying opportunity.”

As far as fundamentals are concerned, the analyst believes QCOM remains “well positioned on several fronts over the longer term.”

“The company is the industry leader in 5G technology and will participate in the global adoption of 5G handsets. The company also sells chips for connected devices and automobiles, which should support higher growth than the handset market and provide diversification. Qualcomm's high-profit-margin licensing business generates strong and stable cash flow and increases the financial flexibility of the company. Following several settlements and legal wins has increased our confidence in the licensing business,” Purk wrote in a client note.

The analyst highlighted Qualcomm’s ability to win a greater share of new content in the premium smartphones market, especially on Android devices.

On the valuation front, Purk notes that shares have already priced in the “potential for a slowdown in the company’s business.”

Again, the analyst recommends owning QCOM stock for long-term investors.

Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ:AMD) was upgraded by Barclays to overweight from equal weight, with a price target of $85, up from $70, sending the chipmaker’s share price up 7%. Barclays also upgraded Qualcomm Incorporated (NASDAQ:QCOM) and NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA), pushing both shares more than 7% and 6% higher, respectively.

Qualcomm (NASDAQ:QCOM) shares remain inexpensive, and the set-up into 2024 looks good, according to Bernstein analysts.

The analysts maintained an Outperform rating and $140 price target on the stock in a research note on Tuesday previewing the company's fiscal first quarter 2023.

"The smartphone industry remains very weak with shipments down 18% YoY in Dec-Q, and down 1% sequentially in what is typically a stronger sequential quarter," stated the analysts.

However, they said it "is somewhat challenging" to read through incremental weakness to Qualcomm, given they are "in the midst of an inventory correction" in a quarter where AAPL shipments rose 40% sequentially.

The analysts argued that even amid a horrid smartphone cycle, there is some "better news peppered in (Samsung share gains, a stickier AAPL, and an increasingly credible adjacency story)," and they believe and hope that eventually, smartphones can turn around, or at least find a bottom.

"The shares remain very inexpensive and set-up into 2024 looks good as things normalize and AAPL business hangs around," concluded the analysts.

Qualcomm misses on Q1 revenues, guides Q2 below Street; shares fall

Qualcomm (NASDAQ:QCOM) reported its Q1 results, with revenue coming in at $9.46 billion (down 12% year-over-year), missing the consensus estimate of $9.6B. EPS was $2.37, slightly better than the consensus estimate of $2.36.

Qualcomm stock trades about 3.5% lower in pre-market Friday trading.

QCT segment revenue was down 11% year-over-year to $7.892B, while QTL segment revenue dropped 16% year-over-year to $7,892B.

“In a challenging environment, we delivered results consistent with guidance, including year-over-year growth in QCT Automotive and IoT,” said Cristiano Amon, President and CEO of the company. “We are confident in our ability to navigate the near term and remain focused on executing our diversification strategy.”

The company provided its Q2/23 outlook, expecting EPS in the range of $2.05-$2.25, compared to the consensus of $2.26. Q2 revenue is expected in the range of $8.7-9.5B, compared to the consensus of $9.55B.

Piper Sandler analysts said the results confirmed that Qualcomm is going through a transition period.

“Although the company guided handsets to be flattish in the March 2022 quarter, we believe that this will be a tough bogey for the company to meet given tough seasonality and macro. We are optimistic about good prospects in 2H23 for QCOM. We reiterate our OW rating,” the analysts said in a note.

Morgan Stanley analysts said the near-term outlook is better than feared.

“Qualcomm guided March roughly to consensus levels, which should be a relief given anxiety coming in, but the company indicated that difficult conditions would persist; our numbers come down for June, with a modest recovery in 2H,” they said after hiking the price target to $145 per share from the prior $126.

Qualcomm Stock Stumbles After Earnings. How Analysts View Chances of Rebound.

Qualcomm QCOM –9.24% has added to pessimism around the semiconductor industry with its earnings report. Wall Street analysts are split on how well the specialist in mobile processors and 5G wireless chipsets can perform in the face of a slowdown in smartphone demand.

Qualcomm (ticker: QCOM) disappointed with its revenue forecast for the fiscal fourth quarter. The questions for analysts now are how quickly will the handset market recover and whether Qualcomm can boost growth in other areas.

Some were optimistic about Qualcomm on the basis it is broadening its offering into categories such as cars and connected devices.

“Overall, while the recovery may be slower to get its legs off the ground given continued softness in handsets, inventories, and the macro, we still believe CEO [Cristiano] Amon is proving Qualcomm can move beyond a modem and cellular IP company to become a true broad-based semiconductor player,” wrote Susquehanna’s Christopher Rolland.

Rolland lowered his target price on Qualcomm shares to $140 from $145 but kept a Positive rating on the stock, judging that its growth probably has bottomed out.

Qualcomm shares were trading down 10.2% at $116.13 in premarket trading. The stock was up 18% this year before the release of its earnings report Wednesday.

Part of Qualcomm’s vulnerability is its current dependence on large customers in the smartphone market such as Apple AAPL –0.30% (AAPL), which is expected to report a slowdown in iPhone sales in its own earnings report on Thursday. A slower-than-expected recovery in China also looks to have hurt Qualcomm’s business in the Android handset market.

“We are confident in saying that QCOM does not appear to be losing share, but rather stuck in a tough handset environment,” wrote Piper Sandler analyst Harsh Kumar in a research note, reiterating an Overweight rating on the stock.

Kumar looks for Qualcomm to show a return to growth in the December quarter, helped by sales from Apple and a stronger seasonal quarter for Android phones.

Others were less confident about Qualcomm’s diversification strategy. Analysts at Oppenheimer kept a Perform rating on the stock without a price target.

“We believe the company is overexposed to the mobile market, with its diminishing growth and increasing competition,” Oppenheimer’s Rick Schafer wrote.
