The brokerage arm of Japan's Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group Inc is planning to start a wholly-owned firm in China, its chief executive said, as the country sets out to open up its vast financial sector in 2020.

The unit, SMBC Nikko Securities, did not say when it will start operations in the world's second largest economy. But its CEO Yoshihiko Shimizu was in Beijing late last month to receive an approval to set up a representative office, he said.

The decision comes close on the heels of rival and Japan's biggest brokerage Nomura Holdings getting the regulatory approval to launch its majority-owned joint venture.

Nikko, however, has decided to avoid partnerships in China.

Japan's 5 Major Banks See Latent Share Profits Plummet

Tokyo, March 31 (Jiji Press)--Combined latent profits on shares held by five major banking groups in Japan as of Tuesday, the final day of fiscal 2019, fell by 2.28 trillion yen, or about 30 pct, from a year before, according to an estimate by an analyst.

The unrealized profits totaled some 5.45 trillion yen, compared with the year-before level of 7.73 trillion yen, based on the TOPIX index of all stocks listed on the first section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange, Akira Takai, chief analyst at Daiwa Securities Co., said.

The drop reflects plummeting share prices amid the spread of the new coronavirus.

Takai said that the five banks' capital-to-asset ratios will go down, but added that they have already conducted write-downs of their shareholdings in fiscal 2008 following a stock market tumble triggered by the September 2008 collapse of U.S. investment bank Lehman Brothers. "Additional costs will be limited," he said.

The five groups are Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group Inc. <8306>, Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group Inc. <8316>, Mizuho Financial Group Inc. <8411>, Resona Holdings Inc. <8308> and Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Holdings Inc. <8309>.

OKYO -- Tokyo prosecutors have arrested four employees of SMBC Nikko Securities, including two executive officers, on allegations of market manipulation, Nikkei has learned from multiple sources.

The Tokyo District Public Prosecutors Office on Friday evening raided SMBC Nikko's headquarters. The arrested employees were: Trevor Hill, SMBC Nikko's head of equity; Alexandre Avakiants, deputy head of equity; Makoto Yamada, general manager of equity trading; and Shinichiro Okazaki, general manager of structured products.

"We take this matter very seriously and sincerely apologize to our customers and other concerned parties for causing great concern and inconvenience," SMBC Nikko said in a statement issued on Saturday. "We are fully cooperating with the investigation by the relevant authorities and have established an investigation committee to establish the facts of the incident and identify required responses."

President and CEO Yuichiro Kondo will hold a news conference in the afternoon to explain the details.

Prosecutors accuse the suspects of making trades with the intention of manipulating the prices of five stocks, including by placing large volumes of "buy" orders to stabilize prices.

Sources said investigators suspect the arrested SMBC Nikko employees used buy orders to support prices of more than 10 stocks in total.

The arrests are the culmination of a monthslong probe into one of the country's leading brokerages. The Securities and Exchange Surveillance Commission launched an investigation in June of last year.

Prosecutors will analyze material seized in the raid while continuing to question SMBC Nikko staff.

According to sources, the trades under scrutiny were related to so-called block offers -- private sales of shares outside the open market.

Investigators suspect the SMBC Nikko employees sought to prevent share prices from falling to ensure that the block offers went through for their clients.

Buffett boosts stakes in Japanese trading houses, may invest more

TOKYO/NEW YORK (Reuters) -Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE:BRKa) Inc has increased its stakes in Japan's five largest trading houses to 7.4%, and the billionaire investor said he may invest more in the country.

Buffett, 92, said in an interview with Nikkei that he was "very proud" of the investments and would meet with the trading houses this week to discuss their businesses, perhaps laying the groundwork for doing business together.

The trading houses are Itochu Corp, Marubeni Corp, Mitsubishi Corp, Mitsui & Co and Sumitomo Corp.

Their shares rose 2.1% to 4.6% in Tokyo on Tuesday following the Nikkei interview.

Berkshire had disclosed owning 5% stakes in each company in August 2020 on Buffett's 90th birthday, in investments then worth more than $6 billion. It reported increasing the stakes to more than 6% in November.

"We would love it if any of the five would come to us ever and say, 'We're thinking of doing something very big or we're about to buy something and we would like a partner or whatever,'" Buffett said.

He also said Berkshire does not invest in other Japanese companies, but "there are always a few I'm thinking about."

Known as "sogo shosha," Japanese trading houses trade in a wide variety of materials, products and food, often serving as intermediaries, and provide logistical support.

They are also deeply involved in the real economy in such areas as commodities, shipping and steel.

The business model may have enticed Buffett, who prefers to invest for the long term and avoid businesses he claims not to understand.

"These five companies are a cross section of not only Japan but of the world," Buffett told Nikkei. "They are really so much similar to Berkshire."

Buffett's Omaha, Nebraska-based conglomerate owns dozens of businesses, including the BNSF railroad, Geico auto insurance, and consumer, energy and industrial companies, as well as stocks such as Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) and Bank of America Corp (NYSE:BAC).

Nikkei also said Berkshire plans to sell more yen-denominated bonds, perhaps foreshadowing more Japanese stock investments.
