Bank of England raises key rate by 50 bps to 4%; suggests peak rates by mid-year

Investing.com -- The Bank of England raised its key interest rate by another 50 basis points on Thursday, warning that its battle against inflation still isn’t over, but held out the possibility of an end to its policy tightening by the middle of the year.

The move, which was as expected by financial markets, takes the Bank rate to 4%, the highest it’s been since the 2008 financial crash.

By raising the cost of mortgage and consumer credit, it threatens to sharpen an already clear economic downturn. The International Monetary Fund expects the U.K. to be the only G7 economy that will shrink this year, and household spending had already showed signs of slowing at the end of last year.

However, the Bank was forced to keep raising interest rates because inflation is also running higher than in the U.S. or the rest of Europe and, at 10.5% in December, hasn’t come down as quickly as it has elsewhere.

“Headline CPI inflation has begun to edge back and is likely to fall sharply over the rest of the year as a result of past movements in energy and other goods prices,” the Bank said in a statement accompanying the decisions. "However, the labor market remains tight and domestic price and wage pressures have been stronger than expected, suggesting risks of greater persistence in underlying inflation."

Even so, its calculations still showed that current market expectations of a peak in rates around 4.5% in mid-2023 were consistent with inflation falling to its 2% target in the medium term. That suggests it doesn't see the need to raise the Bank rate by more than another 50 basis points.

As in December, the Monetary Policy Committee was not unanimous in its decision, with two members voting for no change in the Bank rate.

Rywale chcą się pozbyć Man. City!

Sprawą "The Citizens" zajmie się niezależna komisja.

Angielskie klubu chcą wrzucenia Man. City z Premier League

Ponadto w sezonie 2020/21 dotarł do finału Ligi Mistrzów.

European stocks fall; slowdown fears grow despite U.K. avoiding recession

Economic data released earlier Friday showed that the U.K. narrowly avoided falling into a technical recession in the final quarter of 2022, as the country's economy showed zero growth during those last three months of the year, after falling 0.3% in the July-September period.

That said, the economy contracted sharply in December, dropping 0.5% on the month, suggesting that this is merely delaying the inevitable.

The Bank of England forecast last week that Britain would enter a shallow but lengthy recession, starting in the first quarter of this year and lasting five quarters.

Deutsche Bank cuts ratings for five U.K. homebuilders, sending shares lower

Investing.com -- Shares in several U.K. homebuilding companies fell on Monday after analysts at Deutsche Bank lowered their ratings for these firms.

In a note to clients, the analysts argued that these stocks are no longer "oversold," or neither trading below their true market value nor primed for a pricing rebound. They added that the risks to the British housebuilding sector are now well-balanced. Private volumes are now seen declining in 2023, but pessimism around falling home prices is easing, the analysts said.

As a result, they believe that investors may look to take profits, which would remove some fuel for a future rally in the sector.

Deutsche Bank subsequently slashed its ratings for Barratt Developments PLC (LON:BDEV), Crest Nicholson Holdings PLC (LON:CRST), Redrow PLC (LON:RDW), and Taylor Wimpey PLC (LON:TW) to hold from buy. Meanwhile, Persimmon PLC (LON:PSN) was downgraded to sell from hold.

The U.K.'s housing market has faced increasing pressure as elevated mortgage rates cool buyer demand. Recent data also showed that home prices in the country saw their most broad-based fall last month since April 2009.

Data released earlier Wednesday showed that British consumer price inflation fell by more than expected to 10.1% in January from December's 10.5%, providing some hope that the surge in prices, which had severely hit the living standards of the country’s households, had turned a corner.

The Bank of England is still widely expected to announce another increase in borrowing costs next month, but these numbers have raised expectations that a peak in the central bank’s benchmark interest rate is not far off.

W Anglii niesmak po decyzji króla Karola. Posunął się za daleko? "On i Kamila podarli zbiór zasad"

"On i Kamila podarli zbiór zasad zmarłej królowej na potrzeby operacji związanej z wyścigami królewskimi" - grzmi "The Sun".

"On i Kamila podarli zbiór zasad zmarłej królowej"
Pragnie, by królewska stajnia święciła największe triumfy.

"Król Karol i Kamila podarli zbiór zasad zmarłej królowej na potrzeby operacji związanej z wyścigami królewskimi i zatrudnili zupełnie nowego trenera" - grzmi "The Sun".

Londyn bije historyczny rekord.

LONDON (Reuters) - British supermarket group Asda said on Monday retail director Ken Towle is leaving the business less than ten months after starting the job.

Asda, owned since 2021 by brothers Mohsin and Zuber Issa and private equity company TDR Capital, said the departure of Towle, who was responsible for the group's over 600 stores, was "mutually decided".

Britain's third largest grocer after market leader Tesco (OTC:TSCDY) and Sainsbury's announced former Tesco director Towle's recruitment from convenience chain Nisa in January 2022 but he did not start the job until May.

Asda also said on Monday it had appointed Aldi UK veteran David Hills as its new chief customer officer.

Hills has been at the German-owned discounter since 2007 and is currently group director, marketing & communications.

Asda said acting chief customer officer, Sam Dickson, will continue in the role until Hills arrives later this year and will then assume a strategy role for the Asda and George brands.

Asda had a tough 2022 but in November reported a return to quarterly sales growth, while industry data has shown its sales growth matching that of Tesco and Sainsbury's.

ONDON (Reuters) - Britain's big supermarkets say they have never been more competitive on price, yet their customers are still flocking to German-owned discount stores Aldi and Lidl.

And the discounters' supermarket sweep still has a long way to run, industry executives say, with Aldi UK CEO Giles Hurley pledging Britain's lowest prices "no matter what".

That is forcing Britain's major players - market leader Tesco (OTC:TSCDY), Sainsbury's, Asda and Morrisons - to cut more costs so they can keep a lid on prices and cling on to shoppers who have been hit by a cost of living crisis.

"Over the Christmas period alone shoppers switched 58 million pounds ($70 million)(of purchases) to Lidl from Tesco and Sainsbury's," Lidl GB CEO Ryan McDonnell told Reuters.

"That's not just from customers visiting new stores."

The discounters proved the big winners over the festive period, luring shoppers from all the traditional groups, with Aldi and Lidl's December sales rising 26% and 25% respectively.

The German duo have already grabbed more than 16% of the British market between them but analysts, academics and grocery executives expect that to double within a decade as they spend hundreds of millions of pounds to expand.

Aldi is targeting 1,200 UK stores by 2025 from its current 990, and Lidl is aiming for 1,100, from more than 950.

Britain's incumbents are struggling to compete in part due to the scale of the two relative newcomers, which between them are present in more than 30 countries including the United States, where Aldi in particular is thriving.

The discounters' size guarantees better terms when negotiating supplier deals, while they are also able to take a longer-term view on profit because they are privately-owned and do not have to worry about shareholder returns or stock prices.

Discounters hold more than a third of the supermarket sector in countries such as Germany, Poland, Denmark and Norway and the British shopping landscape is likely to follow suit.

"The UK will model to what many of the European countries have," Leigh Sparks, professor of retail studies at the University of Stirling in Scotland, told Reuters.

Aldi UK, owned by Aldi Sud, is now Britain's fourth largest grocer with a market share of 9.2%, according to researcher Kantar, while Lidl, part of the Schwarz Group, is sixth biggest with 7.1%.

PRICE PRESSURES

Tesco and Sainsbury's have already responded by stripping out in-store meat, fish and deli counters and replacing large numbers of check-out staff with various forms of automation.

This reflects lessons learned during the 2008 financial crisis when Aldi and Lidl secured a foothold in Britain by doing a much better job of holding prices down on their range of 2,000 mostly own-brand products, versus 30,000-40,000 at the big supermarkets.

With Britain teetering on the brink of recession, and food price inflation above 15%, the traditional players are this time putting up a fight. While the price gap with the discounters remains material - at 14-18% for a 45 item shopping basket according to Which? - it has narrowed in recent years.

Tesco and Sainsbury's are now matching Aldi prices on hundreds of key items and using customer loyalty schemes, while they have accepted a profit hit to keep prices down.

"We're in the strongest value position we have been in for many, many years," Tesco CEO Ken Murphy said last month, while Sainsbury's CEO Simon Roberts said it was raising prices by less than all its key competitors.

Some investors say the worst of the pain is behind the traditional players and that dividend yields of nearly 5% at Tesco and Sainsbury's make them solid investments.

"They're paying attractive dividends, they're much simpler businesses than they were and they're very cash generative, that is the attraction," said a top 50 shareholder in both.

(Graphic: Aldi, Lidl gain larger market share, https://www.reuters.com/graphics/UK-GRO ... raphic.jpg

RE-BASING?

Sector executives, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the further rise of Aldi and Lidl is inexorable.

"The only question is who cedes the share and at what point does that become problematic for one or some of the players," one sector veteran told Reuters.

"At some point, there will end up being some form of industry re-basing or consolidation because the amount of space being put down is greater than the increase in demand."

Costcutter owner Bestway has built a 4.5% stake in Sainsbury's but says it is not planning a takeover. Qatar's sovereign wealth fund owns 14.3%.

While in 2019, Britain's competition authorities blocked Sainsbury's proposed takeover of Asda, the landscape is now different, with Aldi ahead of Morrisons by Kantar's measure.

"Nobody's going to take Tesco out but at some point somebody might take Sainsbury's out," the sector veteran said.

(Reuters) -Chemical maker INEOS is entering into U.S. oil and gas production for the first time, agreeing to purchase assets in South Texas from Chesapeake Energy Corp (NYSE:CHK) for $1.4 billion, the companies said on Tuesday.

The deal would give INEOS, run by billionaire businessman Jim Ratcliffe, access to the natural gas that is key to its core business at a time of significant disruption in global gas markets caused by Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

"Over the last two decades, U.S. onshore oil and gas production has provided security of supply for the global market and competitive advantage for U.S. industry," Brian Gilvary, chairman of INEOS Energy, said in a statement.

"We believe this acquisition will help us to serve our internal and external customers today as we continue to position our business to meet the energy transition."

The transaction, involving an area of around 172,000 net acres with average net daily production of about 36,000 barrels of oil equivalent, will also grant Chesapeake Energy a complete exit from the Eagle Ford shale basin.

The Oklahoma City-based energy producer, under pressure from activist investment firm Kimmeridge Energy Management to shift toward solely producing natural gas, had already agreed to sell part of its position in January to privately owned Wildfire Energy for $1.43 billion.

Mark Viviano, managing partner of Kimmeridge's public investment team, said in a separate statement it commended the company's move and the re-focus on low-cost gas assets would "maximize value for Chesapeake stakeholders".

Chesapeake said in its own statement the company would receive $1.175 billion at closing - due in the second quarter of this year - and a further $225 million in four annual installments. Proceeds from the deal will be used to repay debt and fund its share repurchase program.

Data released earlier this session showed that U.K. consumer confidence rebounded in February, with the GfK’s consumer confidence index climbing seven points to minus 38. While this is still close to the historic lows triggered by the cost-of-living crisis, it still represented a 10-month high.
