Mitsubishi Heavy reviewing SpaceJet test flight plan

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. is reviewing a test flight plan for the SpaceJet small passenger jet currently in development, the firm’s president said Wednesday.

The review, partly to see whether the first delivery of the aircraft should be moved back further, reflects delays in the production of test models needed to obtain a type certificate, according to Mitsubishi Heavy Industries President Seiji Izumisawa. A type certificate signifies the airworthiness of an aircraft.

So far, the planned first delivery of the SpaceJet has been delayed five times, from 2013 to the middle of 2020.

“We have not changed” the current schedule, Izumisawa said in an interview with media organizations.

The SpaceJet, previously known as the Mitsubishi Regional Jet, is the first Japanese-made small passenger jet to be developed by Mitsubishi Aircraft Corp., a unit of Mitsubishi Heavy.

Mitsubishi Heavy has been sued by South Koreans who worked for the company during World War II. Last year, South Korea’s top court ordered the company to pay compensation to the plaintiffs.

“Our basic understanding is that the issue has been solved between the Japanese and South Korean governments. We will act in step with the Japanese government,” Izumisawa said.

Tokyo maintains that the wartime labor issue was settled under a 1965 bilateral agreement on property and claims.

Mitsubishi Heavy mulling sale of Nagasaki shipbuilding plant Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. is considering selling one of its largest shipbuilding plants in Japan to reduce costs as it faces tough competition from Chinese and South Korean rivals, informed sources said Thursday.

The company is weighing the sale of the Koyagi plant in the city of Nagasaki to Oshima Shipbuilding Co., the third biggest shipbuilder in the country, the sources said.

The move could accelerate the realignment of the Japanese shipbuilding industry after Imabari Shipbuilding Co. and Japan Marine United Corp., the largest and second largest shipbuilders in the country, last month announced a basic agreement to form a capital and business partnership.

The Koyagi plant, founded in 1972, stopped building liquefied natural gas vessels in September this year and now focuses on liquefied petroleum gas ships.

Mitsubishi Heavy apparently thinks it is unlikely to see improved profitability in the gas ship business where competition with Chinese and South Korean rivals is especially fierce, the sources said.

Mitsubishi Aircraft again delays passenger jet delivery, this time until next year — or later

NAGOYA – Mitsubishi Aircraft Corp. plans to push back the first delivery of its small passenger jet to next year or later in its sixth schedule delay, a source familiar with the matter has said.

The Mitsubishi SpaceJet, previously Mitsubishi Regional Jet, was scheduled to be delivered to All Nippon Airways Co. by the middle of this year.

The Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. subsidiary initially planned to conduct a test flight by its redesigned jetliner last June, but problems with some parts delayed the test, the source said Friday.

As the aircraft-maker also expects to take more time to obtain safety certification from the transport ministry, Mitsubishi Heavy plans to announce the sixth postponement on Feb. 6 when it reports its latest earnings, the source said. The parent company holds a 64 percent stake in Mitsubishi Aircraft.

The decision is the latest setback for the company following the cancellation of orders for up to 100 units of the aircraft in October by Trans States Holdings Inc., which operates three U.S. regional carriers.

Mitsubishi Aircraft initially planned to begin delivering the jetliner — Japan’s first homegrown small passenger jet — in 2013, but the delivery plan was repeatedly postponed due to changes in design, reviews of the manufacturing process and a delay in parts delivery.

The delays have already raised the development cost for the passenger jet to ¥800 billion ($7 billion) from the initial estimate of ¥600 billion, other sources said earlier.

TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Japan's Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. successfully launched Monday morning a rocket carrying a Mars orbiter developed by the United Arab Emirates.

The H2A rocket carrying the Hope explorer lifted off at 6:58 a.m. from Tanegashima Space Center in Kagoshima Prefecture, southwestern Japan.

The Hope explorer, developed at Mohammed bin Rashid Space Centre in Dubai, is expected to travel 493.5 million kilometers over seven months to reach orbit around Mars in 2021, marking the 50th anniversary of the founding of the UAE. It will be the first interplanetary mission by a Middle Eastern country.

The explorer, measuring 2.9 meters in length and 8 meters in width when its solar panels are fully extended and weighing 1.5 tons, will research the temperature and moisture of the Martian atmosphere to study changes over a long period in the climate of the red planet.

It will stay 20,000 to 40,000 km above Mars and orbit the planet every 55 hours.

The liftoff of the Mars orbiter was initially scheduled for Wednesday but was postponed due to bad weather at the launch site.

Project manager Omran Sharaf said in an online press conference on July 13 that the probe is a strategic attempt to boost the development of the country's space sector, investing in resources that may lead to a new economy in the future.

He also expressed gratitude for Japan's support of the project amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The most recent project is the fourth in which Mitsubishi Heavy has conducted launches for overseas customers. It worked with South Korea in 2012, Canada in 2015 and UAE in 2018.

Monday's liftoff marked the 36th consecutive successful H2A rocket launch.

Mitsubishi Heavy Logs 103-B.-Yen Loss from SpaceJet Biz
Tokyo, Feb. 4 (Jiji Press)--Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. <7011> said Thursday that it booked a loss of 103.1 billion yen from its SpaceJet business for April-December 2020 as it put on ice the development of the small passenger jet.
Despite the loss, the Japanese company managed to be in the black in the first three quarters of the year through March 2021, partly thanks to proceeds from the sale of shares in a joint venture related to ocean wind power generation facilities.
