BA-owner IAG optimistic on transatlantic reopening despite 2021 losses

LONDON (Reuters) -British Airways owner IAG (LON:ICAG) is "very optimistic" about the reopening of transatlantic travel and planning to ramp up capacity on those routes next year, fuelling recovery hopes despite warning of a big loss in 2021.

IAG, which also owns Aer Lingus, Iberia and Vueling, is more dependent on travel between Britain and the United States than its competitors and so has been hit harder by 19 months of North Atlantic travel shutdown during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Chief Executive Luis Gallego said on Friday the full reopening of that route on Monday was "pivotal," and rising capacity would help return the group to profit next year.

"We are very optimistic and I think we are going to have 100% of the capacity that we flew in 2019 next summer," he said, when asked about transatlantic routes.

"When we can operate our flights, we are going to come back soon to a profitable situation."

Shares in IAG opened up 1.8%, before slipping to trade down 2.6%.

"A bullish guide on capacity restoration into 2022 is the most important thing here," Bernstein analyst Alex Irving said.

But for 2021, IAG warned it was heading for a 3 billion euro ($3.5 billion) loss, hurt by pandemic restrictions for most of the year.

That guidance was slightly behind analysts' consensus forecast for a loss of 2.87 billion euros, but better than 2020's 4.4 billion euro loss.

IAG's greater exposure to Britain, where travel restrictions were kept stricter for longer compared to the rest of Europe, and its lower exposure to cargo than peers means it has so far trailed European competitors in its recovery.

Air France-KLM has guided to slightly positive earnings for 2021 and Germany's Lufthansa eked out a small quarterly profit for July-September.

Over the summer, usually the most profitable period for airlines, IAG posted an operating loss before exceptional items of 485 million euros for July-September, beating analysts' consensus forecast for a loss of 513 million euros.

(Reuters) -British Airways would make further cancellations up to the end of October and tweak its winter schedule, the airline said on Monday, following Heathrow airport's decision to cap capacity to tackle widespread disruption.

Sky News earlier reported that the IAG-owned carrier's total capacity for winter schedule until the end of March would be reduced by 8% and impact around 10,000 flights.

"We are making adjustments to our short-haul schedule for the next two months... We will need to make some further cancellations up to the end of October," a British Airways spokesperson told Reuters in an emailed statement.

The carrier added that it would be offering customers affected by any of the changes an alternative flight with British Airways or another airline or the option of a refund.

Airlines and airports across Europe have struggled to cope with the rebound in post-lockdown travel, with many failing to recruit enough staff to handle check-ins and baggage.

Earlier this month, British Airways had halted ticket sales for short-haul flights departing from London's Heathrow before the middle of August.

IAG Shares Soar After Airline Group Unveils Upbeat Q3 Guidance

Investing.com -- London-listed shares in International Consolidated Airlines Group S.A. (LON:ICAG) jumped in afternoon trading on Thursday after the carrier group said it expects to deliver better-than-expected third-quarter results thanks to strong growth in passenger revenue.

In a preliminary earnings statement, the owner of British Airways and Iberia added that operating profit for the three-month period to September 30 before exceptional items will be "in the region of" €1.2 billion.

It previously anticipated that income during the period would improve "significantly" when compared to the second quarter.

Forward bookings, meanwhile, remain at expected levels for this time of year, IAG noted, with "no indication of weakness."

As a result, the firm left its fourth-quarter estimates unchanged.

IAG will announce its full set of third-quarter results on October 28.

Investing.com -- Shares in EasyJet PLC (LON:EZJ) jumped on Monday after the Times in the U.K. reported on "speculation" that the budget carrier will be bought by British Airways owner International Consolidated Airlines Group S.A. (LON:ICAG).

According to the newspaper, IAG plans to funnel a recent return to profitability into a series of takeovers aimed at consolidating the European airline industry.

One of these targets includes easyJet, which has seen its share price fall by over 47% in the last one-year period as investors warily eye a potential slowdown in winter passenger traffic and the impact of soaring input costs for airlines across the industry.

The U.K.-based group has flagged that uncertainty clouds its outlook heading into the end of 2022, but added that demand remains "robust" for now.

IAG, the Anglo-Spanish company behind other brands like Iberia and Aer Lingus, has also said bookings have shown "no indication of weakness" and are at expected levels for this time of the year.

Rumors are circulating that the group may harness this position to initiate a separate bid for Portuguese flag carrier TAP, the Times reported.

IAG chief executive Luis Gallego has not directly commented on direct merger plans, saying only that it will only pursue consolidation that "makes sense."

However, he added that the company "wants to consolidate" the European airline sector.

Madrid-listed shares in IAG (BME:ICAG) rallied by more than 4%.

British Airways and Iberia owner IAG flew higher as it lifted its full-year earnings forecasts on the back of strong summer demand as its first-quarter profits performance beat expectations.

The group, which also owns Aer Lingus, now expects annual profit at the top end of a €1.8 - 2.3bn range given in February. Operating profit for the three months to March was €9m, compared with a €718m loss a year earlier and smashing the €179m loss forecast by analysts.

IAG said the summer outlook was encouraging, adding that capacity in the North Atlantic and Latin American markets was now back at pre-pandemic levels, driven by leisure demand.
