MUFG Bank to book $1.9 billion hit after Indonesian unit's stock plunge

TOKYO
The banking unit of Japan's Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group Inc (MUFG) said it would book a one-off charge of about 207.4 billion yen ($1.9 billion) for the quarter ended Dec 31 due to a drop in the share price of an Indonesian subsidiary.

PT Bank Danamon Indonesia Tbk , of which MUFG Bank Ltd owns 94.1%, closed at 3,950 rupiah on Monday on the Indonesia Stock Exchange's last trading day of 2019.

Under accounting rules, if Danamon's shares close below 50% of the average price MUFG paid for its stake, the Japanese bank is required to reassess the value of the holding and book a one-time charge.

MUFG does not disclose the price level where it would be required to book an extraordinary charge. It has built up its stake through a series of acquisitions since 2017. In April it more than doubled its holding to 94% from 40%, paying 9,590 rupiah a share, according to a filing.

But shares of Bank Danamon have tumbled since and this month hit their lowest in nearly three years, at 3,640 rupiah. The shares are down by nearly half this year, and were hit particularly hard in May after index provider MSCI removed the bank from its Global Standard index due to low liquidity.

Exclusion from a benchmark index usually triggers selling by passive funds that track the index.

MUFG replaces CEO after one year
Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group Inc is replacing its CEO with its digital chief after one year, a rare move that illustrates the deepening urgency at Japan's biggest bank about the rise of fintech.

The elevation of Deputy President Hironori Kamezawa to the top spot marks a radical break from tradition for MUFG. The 58-year-old will become the first chief executive to have not previously headed the group's core unit, MUFG Bank.

Outgoing CEO Kanetsugu Mike will become the group's deputy chairman and will remain as head of MUFG Bank. The changes will take effect in April.

Kamezawa's promotion, which was widely speculated in local media, shows how Japan's megabanks are looking to keep pace with more nimble fintech start-ups and the sweeping technological changes that are altering global finance.

Japan's largest bank offers users ¥1,000 to give up paper passbooks and go digital

To encourage more customers to go digital, Japan’s largest bank is offering depositors who give up their paper bankbooks a ¥1,000 reward.

In a campaign that kicked off Friday, MUFG Bank will pay 100,000 customers ¥1,000 if they go fully digital. The ¥100 million reward campaign, which will run through March 15, will be operated on a first-come-first-served basis.

Younger generations are more familiar with online banking, while many elderly people are still accustomed to using the physical passbooks to monitor their accounts. On top of encouraging use of online banking, another motive behind the move is to reduce the costs associated with servicing paper bankbooks. According to the lender, it has to shoulder a nearly ¥200 annual stamp duty for each passbook account.

MUFG Bank has 34 million individual customers, many of whom use the paper bankbooks, meaning the stamp tax adds up to billions of yen each year. There are other costs as well, such as for the ink used to record transactions at ATMs, an MUFG Bank spokesman explained.

The spokesman added that the bank has encouraged users to go digital in the past using financial incentives, but that the scale of the reward is much bigger this time around.

Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group Inc. has posted its first quarterly loss in a decade and cut its annual profit forecast after booking a hefty charge on its stake in an Indonesian bank.

Core lending business slumped in the fiscal third-quarter, covering October to December, underscoring the challenge for Hironori Kamezawa when he takes over from Kanetsugu Mike as chief executive officer in April. Gains from sales of shareholdings and bonds weren’t enough to prop up earnings, and bad-loan costs ticked higher, results showed Tuesday.

Japan’s biggest bank had already flagged the ¥207.4 billion ($1.9 billion) charge on its stake in PT Bank Danamon Indonesia, which reflects a drop in the share price of the recently acquired lender. Adding to the pain, it logged a ¥26.7 billion impairment on its U.S. banking operations, where it has had to refinance mortgages after the Federal Reserve cut interest rates.

MUFG now expects full-year profit of ¥750 billion, down from the ¥900 billion targeted previously. Investors shrugged off the loss, with the shares rising 0.9 percent Wednesday morning in Tokyo, paring this year’s decline to less than 4 percent.

Tokyo, March 31 (Jiji Press)--Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group Inc. <8306> said Tuesday that it will book a loss of 360 billion yen in fiscal 2019 through March, due to declines in the prices of shares in overseas banking subsidiaries.
Of the total, Mitsubishi UFJ, one of the top three banking groups in Japan, will book 130.5 billion yen of impairment loss on its holdings of shares in Thai commercial lender Bank of Ayudhya as the value of the shareholdings fell over 50 pct from the acquisition price amid the outbreak of the new coronavirus.

Japan's 5 Major Banks See Latent Share Profits Plummet

Tokyo, March 31 (Jiji Press)--Combined latent profits on shares held by five major banking groups in Japan as of Tuesday, the final day of fiscal 2019, fell by 2.28 trillion yen, or about 30 pct, from a year before, according to an estimate by an analyst.

The unrealized profits totaled some 5.45 trillion yen, compared with the year-before level of 7.73 trillion yen, based on the TOPIX index of all stocks listed on the first section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange, Akira Takai, chief analyst at Daiwa Securities Co., said.

The drop reflects plummeting share prices amid the spread of the new coronavirus.

Takai said that the five banks' capital-to-asset ratios will go down, but added that they have already conducted write-downs of their shareholdings in fiscal 2008 following a stock market tumble triggered by the September 2008 collapse of U.S. investment bank Lehman Brothers. "Additional costs will be limited," he said.

The five groups are Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group Inc. <8306>, Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group Inc. <8316>, Mizuho Financial Group Inc. <8411>, Resona Holdings Inc. <8308> and Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Holdings Inc. <8309>.

Tokyo, April 30 (Jiji Press)--Japan's Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group Inc. <8306> on Thursday revised down its consolidated net profit projection for the year that ended in March by 230 billion yen to 520 billion yen.
The downward revision reflected substantial impairment losses on its stock holdings due to equity price slumps caused by the coronavirus pandemic, as well as an increase in loan-loss reserves.
