Dollar General Earnings Top, Dollar Tree Misses; Both Stocks Discounted

Estimates: Dollar Tree earnings were expected to rise 17% to $1.16 on a 4.8% increase in sales to $5.54 billion. Comp sales are seen up 1.8%.

Is Dollar Tree a Bargain After Q4 Results?

Dollar Tree Inc. (NYSE: DLTR) reported its most recent quarterly results before the markets opened on Wednesday. The discount retailer posted $1.93 in earnings per share (EPS) and $6.21 billion in revenue, almost in line with the consensus estimates of $1.93 in EPS on revenue of $6.19 billion. The same period of last year reportedly had EPS of $1.89 and $6.36 billion in revenue.

During the latest quarter, enterprise same-store sales increased by 2.4%. At the same time, same-store sales for the Dollar Tree banner increased 3.2% on a constant currency basis (or 3.1% when adjusted to include the impact of Canadian currency fluctuations). Same-store sales for the Family Dollar banner increased 1.4%.

Overall, the chain opened 143 stores, and closed 84 Family Dollar stores and 10 Dollar Tree stores. Additionally, the firm opened five Dollar Tree stores that were re-bannered from Family Dollar. Retail selling square footage at quarter end was approximately 120.1 million square feet.

Looking ahead to the fiscal first quarter, Dollar Tree expects to see EPS in the range of $1.05 to $1.15 and revenue between $5.74 billion and $5.85 billion. But consensus estimates so far are calling for $1.30 in EPS and $5.81 billion in revenue.

Dollar General Corp. (DG - Get Report) posted weaker-than-expected fourth quarter earnings Thursday and issued full-year profit guidance for 2019 that also fell shy of forecasts.

Dollar General said adjusted earnings for the three months ending on February 1, the company's fiscal fourth quarter, came in at $1.84 per share, up 24% from the same period last year but five cents shy of the FactSet consensus forecast. Group sales, Dollar General said, rose 8.5% to $6.6 billion, a figure that matched the analysts' forecasts, but noted that same store sales rose by 4% from the same period last year, well ahead of the expected increase of 2.5%.

Looking into 2019, Dollar General said it sees diluted earnings in the region of $6.30 to $6.50 per share, well shy of the Refinitiv forecast $6.65 per share. Dollar General sees same-store sales growth of around 2.5% for the 12-month period.

Dollar General said that it had $3.12 in earnings per share (EPS) and $8.70 billion in revenue in its fiscal second quarter. That topped consensus estimates of $2.44 in EPS and $8.35 billion in revenue, as well as the $1.74 per share and $6.98 billion posted in the same period of last year.

During the latest quarter, Dollar General net sales increased 24.4% year over year. This net sales increase included positive sales contributions from new stores and growth in same-store sales, modestly offset by the impact of store closures.

Dollar Tree Inc. (NASDAQ: DLTR) reported fiscal third-quarter results before markets opened Tuesday. The discount retailer posted $1.39 in earnings per share (EPS) and $6.18 billion in revenue, beating the consensus estimates of $1.15 in EPS on revenue of $6.12 billion. The same period of last year reportedly had EPS of $1.08 and $5.75 billion in revenue.

Management was quick to note that Dollar Tree delivered its strongest same-store sales performance in the past 10 quarters, along with a 50-basis-point improvement in operating margin.

During the latest quarter, enterprise same-store sales increased by 5.1%. Same-store sales for the Dollar Tree segment increased 4.0%, and for the Family Dollar segment they increased by 6.4%.

In terms of segment revenues, Dollar Tree stores had $3.30 billion in revenue, an increase of 7.4% year over year. Family Dollar stores reported $2.87 billion, which was an increase of 7.5% in the same time.

Citing uncertainty regarding COVID-19, the company did not provide any guidance. However, consensus estimates so far are calling for $1.94 in EPS and $6.69 billion in revenue for the fiscal fourth quarter.

On the books, Dollar Tree cash and cash equivalents totaled $1.12 billion at the end of the quarter, up from $539.2 million at the end of the previous fiscal year.

“We are upgrading DLTR to Buy from Hold as we now see improved risk/reward through potential operational and profitability improvements at Family Dollar given a greater sense of urgency with Mantle Ridge's influence,” Deutsche Bank said in a note.
