Beyond Meat downgraded at Argus on weak demand

Beyond Meat (NASDAQ:BYND) was downgraded to Sell from Hold by Argus on Friday based on weak demand and widening losses.

Argus told investors in a note that demand for Beyond Meat's plant-based protein has fallen amid weaker economic conditions, and "many customers are trading down to cheaper alternatives."

They added that Beyond Meat has also been hurt by increased competition from other makers of plant-based protein, as well as by "low utilization charges and termination fees from co-manufacturers."

"Beyond Meat saw weaker demand in 3Q as many customers traded down from its higher-cost products to cheaper proteins. The company has also been hurt by new entrants in the plant-based protein space, which has lowered its market share. In response, management has shifted its business model to focus more on core products and positive cash flow than on growth. As part of this change, Beyond is lowering prices, consolidating production with fewer co-manufacturers, and working with a narrower set of strategic partners," Argus wrote.

"We expect the low utilization charges to continue in the coming quarters, further increasing pressure on the company. In an effort to generate cash, BYND has laid off nearly 25% of its workforce. It is also shifting its business model to focus more on core products and positive cash flow than on growth. While these actions will help, we expect the company to face weak demand and continued losses into 2024, and believe that a SELL rating is now appropriate," Argus added.

Beyond Meat shares are down more than 7% Friday.

Beyond Meat forecasts 2023 revenue above market expectations

(Reuters) - Beyond Meat (NASDAQ:BYND) Inc on Thursday forecast full-year revenue above market estimates, on the back of demand for its plant-based meat products such as patties, sausages and meatballs at grocers and convenience stores.

Shares of the company rose about 15% in extended trading.

The company posted better-than-expected quarterly sales for the first time since June 2021, after the company suffered a collapse in demand for its faux meat products as consumers turned back to traditional beef, poultry and pork products.

The plant-based meat maker forecast full-year revenue to be in the range of $375 million to $415 million. Analysts on average expected $394.2 million, according to Refinitiv data.

The company's net revenue fell to $79.9 million in the quarter ended Dec. 31 from $100.7 million a year earlier, but beat analysts expectations of $75.7 million.

(Reuters) -Beyond Meat said on Wednesday it expects sharper revenue growth in the second half of 2023 after reporting a smaller-than-expected quarterly loss on easing supply chain pressures and cost controls.

Shares in the plant-based meat company rose as much as 11% in extended trading before paring gains, last up 4%, as it also beat Wall Street estimates for first-quarter revenue.

Sales in Beyond Meat (NASDAQ:BYND)'s international foodservice segment nearly doubled in the quarter, helped by partnerships with quick-service restaurants including McDonalds Corp that recently introduced Beyond patties in its Double McPlant burger across restaurants in UK and Ireland.

Beyond Meat finance chief Lubi Kutua said on a post-earnings call that focus on expanding distribution of recently launched products in the U.S. and new items in international markets will help bolster revenue growth in the latter part of the year.

The company has cut jobs, ramped up automation in its manufacturing processes and strengthened its sourcing network in to keep a tight lid on costs and expand margins.

Beyond Meat, which is also restructuring certain contracts and operating activities related to Beyond Meat Jerky, said it intends to assume distribution responsibilities for the product from fourth quarter of 2023 and expects this to result in gross margin expansion.

"Achieving significant margin improvement will be challenging until sales trends reverse," said CFRA Research analyst Arun Sundaram.

The company reiterated its annual revenue forecast of $375 million to $415 million.

Total operating expenses in the first quarter fell to $63.9 million from $97.8 million a year earlier, also seeing a relief from easing freight and manufacturing costs from pandemic highs.

The company's net loss narrowed to $59 million, or 92 cents per share. Analysts on average expected the company to post a loss of $1.01 cents per share, as per Refinitiv IBES data.

Net revenue fell 15.7% to $92.2 million in the first quarter but beat expectations of $90.8 million.

Beyond Meat cuts annual revenue forecast as faux meat demand dips

(Reuters) -Beyond Meat cut annual revenue forecast and missed second-quarter net sales estimates, as slowing demand for its pricier plant-based meat products shows no signs of recovery, sending shares down 8% in extended trading on Monday.

Bogged down by inflationary pressures, customers are opting for lower-priced animal protein over alternatives such as plant-based products.

The ambiguity around the health benefits of plant-based meat is also weighing on growth, said CEO Ethan Brown in a post-earnings call.

"This change in perception is not without encouragement from interest groups who have succeeded in seeding doubt and fear around the ingredients and process used to create our and other plant-based meats," he added.

Beyond Meat (NASDAQ:BYND) has been "testing" price cuts to attract customers by offering its core products at a price point that is at or below their animal protein equivalent.

The company forecast 2023 revenue between $360 million and $380 million, compared with its prior expectation of $375 million to $415 million.

Beyond Meat said it was unlikely to meet its target of achieving cash flow positive operations within the second half of 2023.

"The guidance cut is disappointing, especially considering the decent start to the year. We are now back to talking about cash burn and the need to raise capital... Something needs to change to prevent this ship from sinking," said CFRA Research analyst Arun Sundaram.

Beyond Meat's quarterly net revenue fell nearly 31% to $102.1 million, missing analysts' average estimate of $108.4 million, according to Refinitiv data.

However, easing supply chain expenses and its efforts to control costs helped the company post a smaller-than-expected loss of 83 cents, compared with estimates of 86 cents.

The company had said in October it would cut jobs, which was expected to lead to savings of about $39 million over 12 months.

Obrazek

Beyond Meat (NASDAQ:BYND) was cut to Underperform from Neutral at Mizuho on Thursday, with analysts maintaining the stock price target of $5 per share.

The analysts told investors that the plat-based recovery is uneven and the category growth has disappointed.

Analysts note that a distinction exists between plant-based beverages and plant-based meat, which "remains impacted by macros, insufficient innovation, & larger reinvestment."

"We are downgrading BYND to Underperform (from Neutral) on category pressure, cash burn, & risk to ests," they wrote.

"Macro pressures & lack of disruptive innovation suggest downside risks to sales through 2024 while larger reinvestment, to reverse deteriorating consumer perceptions, is contra to achieving positive FCF," the analysts added.

They also stated that the risk of short covering is "also likely lower as NTM cash tightens and enhances concerns for capital."
