Nio Stock Eyes Buy Point As Wall Street Looks To These Catalysts
FacebookTwitterLinkedInShare Licensing
APARNA NARAYANAN08:58 AM ET 10/14/2020
Nio (NIO) boasts several near-term catalysts, and the Chinese EV maker is poised to take a big slice of the market that Tesla (TSLA) dominates, a Wall Street firm said. Nio stock jumped, clearing a buy point in early trade.

JPMorgan analyst Nick Lai set a new price target of 40 by June 2021, citing enterprise value-to-sales metrics.

By 2025, JPMorgan now expects Nio to capture 7% of the electric vehicle market. In the premium EV segment, where Tesla now dominates, the firm sees Nio taking a massive 30% share.

JPMorgan sees several catalysts in the near term:

the upcoming Nio earnings for the third quarter, likely in mid-November
potential expansion of gross profit margin by 12%
a strong backlog of orders, with the wait time for the newly launched Nio EC6 crossover currently at eight weeks
the expected debut of a new sedan at Nio Day, set for December 2020. Founded in 2014, Nio's present lineup includes the ES8 and ES6 SUVs, besides the new EC6, which is challenging the made-in-China Model 3 sedan.

Nio Stock, Electric Car Stocks
Shares popped 10.2% to 23.80 in early trade on the stock market today. If the rally holds in the regular session, Nio stock would clear a 22.69 buy point off a short consolidation, according to MarketSmith charts analysis. The China EV stock made a March coronavirus low of 2.11.

Among other electric car stocks, Tesla stock gained 0.5% in Wednesday's premarket, Li Auto (LI) rose 4.5%, Xpeng Motors (XPEV) added 3% and Nikola (NKLA) rallied 0.7%.

This month, Nio and its Chinese EV peers Li Auto and Xpeng reported soaring sales in the world's largest auto market.

Nio stock rallied this year as the EV startup's sales and cash flow woes appeared to ease. Analysts also praised the strong word-of-mouth for Nio's electric SUVs.

Where Nio Is Outpacing Tesla

When investors think of electric vehicles and massive stock gains seen in 2020, they probably think of Elon Musk and Tesla Inc. (NYSE: TSLA). After all, a gain of more than 400% year to date to a $400 billion market cap is impressive enough for any investor. It turns out that the electric vehicle (EV) stock that investors should have been even more focused on was Nio Ltd. (NYSE: NIO).

With shares of Nio now the most active on the New York Stock Exchange, this stock is up about 600% year to date, and it is up 1,800% from a year ago. Nio is considered to be the “Tesla of China” by some of the more aggressive investors, and its market cap has now approached the $35 billion mark.

It is easy to be skeptical. Every journalist and just about every analyst out there has been skeptical of Tesla’s rising valuations over the past decade. All the comparisons to being worth more than Ford and General Motors combined, and myriad other reasons. The reality is that Musk, even with all the antics he has pulled over the past decade, is the one who has been able to laugh all the way to the bank.

Two key analyst calls have brought much more light to Nio in recent days. The company recently raised $1.5 billion in a stock offering, and the shares just kept running higher.

Citigroup upgraded Nio to Buy from Neutral, citing strong orders in the backlog. The firm’s price target rose to $33.20 from $18.10. The analyst report also cited that Nio is increasing its market share and is seeing lower battery costs. Nio also appears to the winner of policy tailwinds acting to boost its exports.

Earlier in the week, JPMorgan raised its rating on Nio to Overweight from Neutral. The firm also hiked its $14 price target to a street-high $40. The call was based on much higher EV penetration rates in China in the coming years, and it also touted lower battery costs reaching parity with internal combustion engines. The firm expects that Nio can command a 7% market share in EVs by 2025, and that will be closer to a 30% share in the premium EV space.

Back in September, when Nio traded handily under $10, Deutsche Bank issued a Buy rating and a $24 price target. The stock has now surpassed that, and then some, and then some more.

Goldman Sachs issued a Sell rating on Nio over the summer that hurt the shares.

Again, it would be easy to be skeptical here and point out valuations and being priced for perfection and various other issues. That just hasn’t mattered so far, and Nio has been on the winning end compared with rising short interest by those who have bet against the company.

It is also extremely difficult now to legitimately compare Nio and Tesla in direct matchups. Musk and Tesla delivered 139,000 vehicles in the third quarter of 2020. Nio announced at the beginning of October that its delivery of 4,708 vehicles in September was up 133.2% year over year. For the entire third quarter of 2020, Nio’s 12,206 vehicles delivered was up by 154.3% year over year.

Nio stock traded at $28.26 late Friday morning, and its 52-week range is $1.36 to $29.40. The trading volume is now nearing 100 million shares.

China EV sales soar
Electric cars vastly outpaced sales of traditional vehicles in China last month. Sales of so-called new energy vehicles vaulted 68% in September, rising for a third straight month. Tesla TSLA has seen sales plateau in recent months. It ranked third in NEV sales, behind a GM joint venture and BYD. Domestic EV upstarts Nio NIO, Li Auto LI and Xpeng Motors XPEV reported strong September and Q3 sales. Nio soared to record highs on a JPMorgan price target hike.

Chiński konkurent Tesli z Wall Street
NIO.

Nio Hits Big Milestone As Wall Street Sees 'Strong EV Leader In the Making'

Nio (NIO) announced a key production milestone as Morgan Stanley turned more bullish on the electric-car maker. Nio stock soared.

Nio's 5,000th electric vehicle of the month rolled off the production line at a Hefei manufacturing plant, the company said Thursday.

Reports in local Chinese media said that was the first time that Nio has exceeded 5,000 units per month.

The milestone comes a day after Morgan Stanley raised its earnings forecasts and price target for the so-called Tesla (TSLA) of China. The hikes were driven mainly by better-than-expected Q3 deliveries and a more visible growth outlook, the firm said.

"The pace of Nio's progress in achieving its strategic and investment ambitions is tracking ahead of our expectations on all fronts," Morgan Stanley analyst Tim Hsiao wrote. His research note was titled "A strong EV leader in the making."

The firm expects China EV competition to intensify in 2021. But it believes incumbents and new entrants will struggle to replicate Nio's diverse strategies.

"We look for Nio to reinforce its pole position through superior volume scale, good spectrum of model/market coverage, self-driving technologies and diversification into power solutions," Hsiao said.

IBD Live: A New Tool For Daily Stock Market Analysis

Notably, the analyst predicts Nio EV sales should see stronger volumes for the rest of 2020 into 2021. He cited stronger-than-expected demand and strong backlog for Nio's EC6 electric coupe SUV, a potential rival to the Tesla Model Y. A made-in-China Model Y is likely to begin deliveries around the start of 2021.

And on Jan. 9, Hsiao expects a lower-priced fourth model to be launched at the annual Nio Day, joining the EC6 and older ES6 and ES8 electric SUVs. There have been some images of a Nio sedan that could comp

He kept an overweight rating while raising his price target on Nio stock to 33 from 20.50.

Nio Stock, Electric Car Stocks
Shares of Nio surged 16% to 31.99 on the stock market today, hitting a record high. Nio stock is extended from an Aug. 25 breakout past a 15.55 buy point, meaning shares are not in buy range.

Li Auto (LI) advanced 10% to 20.62, not far from a 21.96 buy point. Xpeng Motors (XPEV) gained 8.9%. Both China electric car stocks came public this summer. BYD (BYDDF), a Chinese EV and battery maker that trades over the counter in the U.S., leapt 12.5% to 20.78, a new high.

Tesla stock rose 1.2% to 410.83, slightly below its 50-day moving average. Among other electric car stocks, Nikola (NKLA) edged up 0.6%.

Morgan Stanley's note comes two weeks after JPMorgan also turned more bullish on Nio stock. The firm also cited in part the EC6 backlog and the debut of a fourth model.

Nio Stock Falls Late On Mixed Q4 Earnings Report; Feb. Deliveries Slow

Nio (NIO) missed Q4 estimates on the bottom line but edged past top line forecasts, after Chinese electric-vehicle rival Li Auto (LI) reported a surprise profit last week. Nio stock fell late.

Nio Earnings
Estimates: Late Monday Nio, known as the Tesla (TSLA) of China, is likely to narrow net loss to 7 cents per ADS from 39 cents a year ago as revenue soars 148% to $1.01 billion.

Results: Per-share loss of 14 cents on revenue of $1.02 billion. Nio has already disclosed that Q4 2020 deliveries leapt 111% to 17,353 vehicles, growing for the third straight quarter after the pandemic hit in early 2020. Its new, sporty and youth-oriented EC6 luxury electric crossover outsold two older electric SUVs — the ES8 and ES6 — in December. Sales momentum slowed to 5,578 vehicles in February from 7,225 vehicles in January, though both were up triple digits year over year.

Meanwhile, Nio in January announced the ET7 electric sedan, a Tesla Model 3 rival due next year, and it plans to expand into Europe in 2021. As Nio expands, Wall Street will watch the impact on margins and production costs. Gross margin improved to 17.2% in Q4 from -8.9% a year ago and 12.9% in Q3. Vehicle margin improved t0 17.2% from -6% a year ago and 14.5% in Q3.

Nio's cash balance climbed to $6.5 billion at the end of the quarter vs.$3.3 billion in Q3.

Outlook: Nio sees Q1 deliveries of 20,000-20,500 vehicles, up 421%-434% from a year ago and up 15%-18% from Q4. Revenue is seen at $1.13 billion-$1.16 billion, up about 438%-451% from a year ago and up 11%-14% from Q4.

Nio Stock
Shares dropped 4.8% late after closing up 8.7% at 49.76 in Monday stock market trading. Nio stock remains under the 50-day line after a failed breakout past a 57.30 buy point, according to MarketSmith chart analysis. The relative strength line, which compares a stock's performance vs. the S&P 500, for Nio stock bolted higher in 2019 and 2020 but is now below January 2021 highs.

Among other EV stocks, Li Auto gained 1.9% Monday and Xpeng Motors (XPEV), which reports March 8, rose 4.1%. Tesla added 6.4%.

...
Przedstawiciele chińskiego start-upu branży EV Nio (NIO) oświadczyli w ostatni wtorek, że globalny niedobór chipów zmusi go do produkcji mniejszej liczby samochodów w drugim kwartale 2021 roku. Z drugiej strony niedobór chipów i baterii oznacza, że Nio będzie musiał obniżyć loty do poprzedniego poziomu 7500 sztuk w drugim kwartale 2021 roku.

Nio, XPeng Report Huge Sales Growth for March and Q1
Paul Ausick
April 1, 2021 12:12 pm
China-based electric vehicle (EV) makers Nio Ltd. (NYSE: NIO) and XPeng Inc. (NYSE: XPEV) on Thursday reported vehicle delivery totals for March and for the first quarter of the year. Li Auto Inc. (NASDAQ: LI) is expected to report deliveries soon, and so is Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ: TSLA). The consensus estimate for Tesla’s first-quarter deliveries has settled around 162,000 units.

Nio stock, which traded at a 52-week high of nearly $67 in January, now trades closer to $40. To say that investor demand for EV makers’ shares has been strong is something of an understatement. Even so, the companies continue to post large percentage increases in deliveries, even if they are based on relatively small numbers.

For the month of March, Nio delivered 7,257 vehicles, a monthly record for the company and 373% higher than the number delivered in March of 2020. For the quarter, Nio delivered a total of 20,060 EVs, a record quarter and up 423% year over year.

XPeng delivered 5,102 EVs in March, 384% higher year over year and up 130% month over month. Deliveries for the first quarter set a new record of 13,340 units, a year-over-year increase of 487%.

In the fourth quarter of last year, Tesla delivered around 181,000 vehicles, and it came within a whisker of delivering 500,000 for the full year. Analysts are expecting the company to deliver around 800,000 vehicles this year, but starting off with about 20% of the expected total in the first quarter is digging a hole that may be hard for Tesla to escape.

Chip shortages have plagued the auto industry in general this year and, according to some reports, the shortage may not work itself out until at least the end of the year. The shortages have led to temporary shutdowns in some Stellantis (formerly Fiat Chrysler) and Ford plants in the United States. Tesla halted production of its Model 3 in California for two weeks in late February due to the chip shortage.

Nio said in early March that it would be slowing production from a previously forecast level of 10,000 vehicles per month to 7,500 in the second quarter. That implies an increase of around 12% quarter over quarter. The company halted production at one of its plants for five days beginning on March 29.

Nio shares traded up nearly 8% early Thursday morning but backed off to a gain of around 2.5% in the noon hour. It was trading at around $39.95, in a 52-week range of $2.22 to $66.99. The consensus price target on the stock is $56.14

XPeng stock traded up nearly 7.5% early Thursday but pulled back to a gain of about 2% at $37.25. The stock’s 52-week range is $17.11 to $74.49.

Nio delivered 10,878 vehicles in November, 106% above a year earlier. That's up sharply from October deliveries of just 3,667 amid production line shutdowns to prepare for new models. Nio has expected to deliver 23,500-25,500 EVs in the fourth quarter, little changed vs. Q3.
