Virgin Galactic stock could double with commercial passenger flights expected next year, a group of analysts said Monday. Shares of the company soared on the news
Analysts at Bank of America (BAC) initiated coverage on Virgin Galactic (SPCE) Monday with a buy rating and a 35 price target.
"While Virgin Galactic is not yet operational, the company is gearing up to begin serving customers in early 2021," the BofA analysts wrote. "We believe SPCE's growth potential is unparalleled vs. our coverage (of current potential) and the current nascent stages of the company provide investors with a unique entry point into the stock."
Virgin Galactic shares jumped 25% to 20.51 on the stock market today. Earlier this month UBS began coverage on Virgin Galactic stock with a buy rating.
The space industry as a whole is growing. BofA's Virgin Galactic stock analysts see the space market hitting $1.4 trillion by the end of 2030, up from $415 billion currently.
While analysts see an upbeat future for Virgin Galactic's space flights, the company is currently not flying paying passengers so there is no revenue coming in and losses are piling up. Risks to the business model also include a fatal accident like one that happened in 2014.
And though shares jumped, Virgin Galactic stock is currently below its 50-day and 200-day lines. It is not forming a discernible pattern. Boeing (BA) shares rose 5.3% to 164.40. Boeing's venture capital arm HorizonX has a $20 million minority stake in Virgin.
Virgin Galactic Stock Up, Commercial Flights Ahead
The company expects the window of its first powered test flights to open on Oct. 22 following two successful glide tests of SpaceShipTwo.
The first flight will have two pilots on board and will contain NASA payloads. A second powered test flight will follow with a crew of two test pilots in the cockpit and four mission specialists in the cabin. The primary objective of the second powered flight will be to evaluate the full customer cabin and hardware, as well as procedures and training details.
If those flights go as expected, Virgin Galactic sees the first commercial flight in the first quarter of 2021.
But that timeline could be ambitions. Virgin Galactic unveiled the interior of its SpaceShipTwo cabin over the summer with artist renderings. Those came instead of photographs or a walk through the cabin. It indicated to some that commercial flights may be further away than anticipated.
Hypersonic Travel Potential
Virgin Galactic began as a space tourism company, but analysts have noted the company's potential in hypersonic point-to-point travel. The company could disrupt the airline industry by using its space plane to take passengers across the globe. They would travel at more than three times the speed of sound.
"While this is a far off revenue stream and other competitors are ahead of (Virgin Galactic stock) on hypersonic aircraft development, we recognize that Virgin Galactic's unparalleled vertically integrated manufacturing system gives the company somewhat of an advantage in this market," the BofA note said.
In February, then-Chief Executive George Whitesides told CNBC the company wants to integrate its vehicle into national airspace systems. It hopes to land at airports and link to local transport networks.

Virgin Galactic (SPCE) could see its first powered test flight this weekend as Richard Branson's space tourism company looks ahead to the start of commercial service. Virgin Galactic stock dipped.
The flight will complete data-gathering for the final two FAA verification and validation milestones. That will allow commercial flights on SpaceShipTwo to begin. The flight will also include revenue-generating payloads as part of the NASA Flight Opportunities program.
"Vehicles and flight crew are ready," the company tweeted Friday. "Flight window is now open. We will fly no earlier than Saturday. We have range clearance through the weekend and can extend into next week if necessary. Evaluating high-level winds and turbulence."
Virgin Galactic said Wednesday that it installed the NASA payloads into the cabin in preparation for the test flight. "On this flight, the pilots will be pitching the spaceship 270 degrees following boost to give the payloads extra time in data-collection mode," it added.
After completing glide flights, Virgin Galactic had previously planned powered flights to start in a Nov. 19-23 test window. Spiking coronavirus cases in New Mexico forced a delay. CEO Michael Colglazier said last month the company is still experiencing schedule and cost inefficiencies due to the pandemic and expects those to continue in 2021.
It's unclear how the coronavirus delays will affect the first commercial flights. The company previously had predicted that service would begin in Q1 with Branson on the first flight.

The company's current plans include space tourism flights for the 700 future passengers who put down refundable deposits. It's also exploring other revenue opportunities that include professional astronaut training, NASA payloads and services for the friends and family of those flying with Virgin Galactic.

The powered test flight Saturday failed to reach space after the rocket motor ignition sequence was aborted.
The company said it would redo the test before moving on to its second powered test flight. But management didn't say how the aborted test would affect its timeline to start commercial service at the end of the first quarter.

At about 10:30 a.m. ET Saturday, the VMS Eve mothership took off from Virgin Galactic's spaceport in New Mexico, carrying the SpaceShipTwo Unity.
The Eve released the Unity around 11:15 a.m., and its rocket motor ignited but appeared to shut down one second later. After about 15 minutes, the Unity landed safely back at Spaceport America.
"The ignition sequence for the rocket motor did not complete," Virgin Galactic tweeted afterward. "Vehicle and crew are in great shape. We have several motors ready at Spaceport America. We will check the vehicle and be back to flight soon."
Saturday evening, Colglazier tweeted that after the release from the mothership, Unity's onboard computer that monitors the rocket motor lost connection. That triggered a fail-safe that halted the rocket motor's ignition.

Investing.com -- Space companies are soaring after news that Cathie Wood's Ark Invest is creating a "Space Exploration ETF."
Ark Invest, known for investing in disruptive innovation, said in a filing that the new exchange traded fund would focus on companies that are “leading, enabling, or benefitting from technologically enabled products and/or services that occur beyond the surface of the earth."
Virgin Galactic Holdings Inc (NYSE:SPCE) rose 20% and Maxar Technologies (NYSE:MAXR) is up 30%, even though no company has yet been named for inclusion.
Ark's flagship ARK Innovation fund returned more than 170% last year, according to CNBC, and has assets under management of $17 billion. The fund's largest holding is Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA), and last month Wood told CNBC that she has a $7,000 price target for the electric vehicle maker. (For reference, it's trading around $860 now). Tesla's Elon Musk is founder of SpaceX.
“Space exploration is possible due to the convergence of a number of themes, and a Space Exploration Company may not currently derive any revenue, and there is no assurance that such company will derive any revenue from innovative technologies in the future,” according to the filing.
The ETF will trade under the ticker ARKX.

Investing.com -- Space companies are soaring after news that Cathie Wood's Ark Invest is creating a "Space Exploration ETF."
Ark Invest, known for investing in disruptive innovation, said in a filing that the new exchange traded fund would focus on companies that are “leading, enabling, or benefitting from technologically enabled products and/or services that occur beyond the surface of the earth."
Virgin Galactic Holdings Inc (NYSE:SPCE) rose 20% and Maxar Technologies (NYSE:MAXR) is up 30%, even though no company has yet been named for inclusion.
Ark's flagship ARK Innovation fund returned more than 170% last year, according to CNBC, and has assets under management of $17 billion. The fund's largest holding is Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA), and last month Wood told CNBC that she has a $7,000 price target for the electric vehicle maker. (For reference, it's trading around $860 now). Tesla's Elon Musk is founder of SpaceX.
“Space exploration is possible due to the convergence of a number of themes, and a Space Exploration Company may not currently derive any revenue, and there is no assurance that such company will derive any revenue from innovative technologies in the future,” according to the filing.
The ETF will trade under the ticker ARKX.

Following an aborted test flight in December, Virgin Galactic (SPCE) announced Monday that its next test flight window will open on Feb. 13. SPCE stock rose.
Richard Branson's space company said that the next powered flight will test the work that has been done since it aborted a powered test flight of its spaceplane in December. The vehicle failed to reach space after the rocket motor ignition sequence was halted.
The February test will also include the original objectives from the December flight, which was supposed to complete data-gathering for the final two FAA verification and validation milestones.
That will allow commercial flights on SpaceShipTwo to begin. The flight will also test the customer cabin as well as upgraded horizontal stabilizers and flight controls.
"We are pleased to be able to get back to the skies and continue our flight test program," said CEO Michael Colglazier in a release. "I would like to thank our team for their continued hard work and diligence in working towards this important milestone for Virgin Galactic."

Shares rallied 5.8% to 46.87 on the stock market today. Wall Street analysts have been very bullish on SPCE stock for months despite the lack of revenue-generating flights.
Virgin Galactic is also among heavily shorted stocks that saw interest from retail investors. Nearly 20% of its 210 million share float is sold short. SPCE stock soared to a new high of 59.43 on Jan. 27 before retreating.
Shares of Boeing (BA), whose venture capital arm has invested in Virgin Galactic, edged up 0.2%.
Virgin Galactic has said it would redo the test flight before moving on to its second powered test flight. That second flight plus FAA certification should clear the way for the start of commercial service.
Ahead of the aborted December test flight, Virgin Galactic said it hoped to see its first commercial flight in Q1. The coronavirus pandemic has also been weighing on the flight schedule. Virgin Galactic had to close a test flight window in November due to spiking cases in New Mexico.

Virgin Galactic Stock Is Falling Because It Flew Too High
Stock in space tourism pioneer Virgin Galactic Holdings is falling after earnings. Analysts are getting a little more nervous about space travel as the date for commercial operations approaches.
As far as spending and earnings go, the quarter was much as expected. But earnings don’t matter for the company all that much now. Virgin Galactic (ticker: SPCE) doesn’t have significant sales yet. The bigger deal is delays in flight testing revealed Thursday.
UBS analyst Myles Walton explained in a Friday research report that the eight-to-nine-week delay in powered flight tests was due to electromagnetic interference, which the company is addressing with design modifications. The mods will require extra testing.
That’s the bad news, but Walton pointed out there were positives from the earnings report as well. “The company is shifting focus from R&D to manufacturing as they look to scale spaceships and spaceports with the target of 400 flights/year per spaceport,” he wrote. That’s up to 2,400 paying customers per spaceport a year.
What’s more, the company announced an agreement with the Italian air force for suborbital astronaut training, among other things. That deal will bring additional sales into the company.
Walton, after weighing the pluses and minuses, kept his Hold rating on shares after earnings. He cut his target price to $40 from $52. Much of the reason has less to do with Virgin Galactic than with luxury stocks’ recent pullback. Stock in Ferrari (RACE), for instance, is down about 14% year to date, while Galactic stock is up more than 50%. Galactic, it seems, got a little too high relative to other luxury goods providers.
Walton uses luxury stocks as a barometer because space tourism, early on, will be expensive. A seat on a Virgin Galactic flight might cost around $250,000.
Alembic Global analyst Peter Skibitski is also feeling a little more cautions. He downgraded shares to Hold From Buy on Friday, citing valuation. HIs target price, according to FactSet, went up to $39 from $27 a share. But Galactic stock, coming into Friday, was trading above $42 a share.
Price targets on Virgin Galactic are rising as Wall Street as the company moves toward commercial operations later in 2021. The average analyst price target is up about 33% since the beginning of the year. That puts it at about $36 a share, just about where the stock is in late-afternoon trading Friday.
Analysts, it seems, to want to see successful test flights before getting more positive on the stock again.
Right now, five out of nine analysts covering Galactic rate share Buy. The average Buy-rating ratio for stocks in the Dow Jones Industrial Average is about 57%.
Back in September, however, the Galactic Buy rating ratio was 100%. Since then, shares are up roughly 100%. Analysts are taking some chips off the table after quite a five-to-six-month run.
Virgin Galactic shares are down 11%, to $37.59, in late trading Friday. The S&P 500 is up 0.3%.

Akcje Virgin Galactic (SPCE 6,37%) poszybowały w górę o 27% w poniedziałek, po tym jak w weekend firma przeprowadziła udany lot testowy w stratosferę. To krok we właściwym kierunku, inwestorzy zareagowali entuzjastycznie, ale firma musi udowodnić, że może konsekwentnie osiągać swoje cele.
Lot testowy odbył się w sobotę zgodnie z planem. Statek powietrzny VSS Unity, po odłączeniu od statku macierzystego, osiągnął prędkość Mach 3 (trzykrotnie większą niż prędkość dźwięku) oraz uzyskał poziom stratosfery na wysokości 55,45 mil, po czym szybując około 13 minut wrócił bezpiecznie na ziemię do portu w Nowym Meksyku. W oświadczeniu spółki, dyrektor generalny Michael Colglazier ocenił sobotni przelot jako "duży krok naprzód zarówno dla Virgin Galactic, jak i lotów kosmicznych dla ludzi", a także zapowiedział, że "Natychmiast rozpoczniemy przetwarzanie danych uzyskanych z tego udanego lotu testowego".
Ostatni lot testowy miał miejsce w grudniu ubiegłego roku, jednak zakończył się niepowodzniem, ponieważ silniki Unity nie zapaliły po odłączeniu od statku macierzystego. Inwestorów frustrowało niedotrzymywanie przez firmę terminów zaplanowanych działań czy dane finansowe ze spółki, która w istocie nie prowadzi działalności. Virgin początkowo miało nadzieję rozpocząć komercyjne loty w ubiegłym roku, jednak pandemia COVID-19, a także nierozwiązane problemy techniczne, wygenerowały niekontrolowane opóźnienie. W 2020 roku Virgin Galactic wygenerował 0,23 miliona USD przychodów przy 273 milionach USD strat. W latach 2018-2020 stracił łącznie 622 miliony USD.
