Financials were pushed lower by a slide in banking stocks following disappointing quarterly results from Wall Street banks.

Taiwan Semiconductor (TSM) plans on a second chip plant in Arizona. The chip leader will increase its total investment in Arizona from $12 billion to $40 billion, following August's CHIPS and Science Act, which includes incentives. TSMC shares are down over 1%.

Investing.com -- Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TW:2330) (TSMC) logged a better-than-expected fourth-quarter profit on Thursday, aided chiefly by steady demand for chips and a more favorable exchange rate, even as its revenue came in slightly below expectations.

TSMC’s diluted earnings per share for the three months to December 31 was 11.41 Taiwan dollars ($1.82), up from 6.41 Taiwan dollars last year and higher than analyst expectations for a reading of 11.12 Taiwan dollars.

The world’s largest chipmaker also logged an improved net profit margin during the quarter, which rose to 47.3% from 37.9% last year. This helped offset a slightly lower-than-expected revenue figure, which came in at 625.53 billion Taiwan dollars ($19.93B), compared to expectations of 638.99B Taiwan dollars. But the figure was within the company's guidance range.

The company ramped up shipments of its 5-nanometer chips during the quarter, with the product now accounting for about 32% of its overall revenue. Along with South Korean conglomerate Samsung Electronics Co Ltd (KS:005930), TSMC is the only other firm in the world that manufactures 5 nm chips.

The firm is a major supplier for iPhone maker Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL), as well as other chipmakers including Qualcomm Incorporated (NASDAQ:QCOM) and NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA). Its shipments to North America made up about 68% of its revenues in 2022.

TSMC’s overall earnings in 2022 came up to 1.017 trillion Taiwan dollars ($33.39B), nearly twice as the 596.54B Taiwan dollars seen in 2021.

The company also benefited from a more favorable currency exchange rate in 2022, as the Taiwan dollar tumbled over 20% against the dollar during the year.

TSMC saw a sharp surge in revenues over the past two years, as increased demand for electronics due to the COVID-19 pandemic and a crypto boom sparked a global chip shortage. While the trend has now reversed, the past two years helped the Taiwanese firm establish its dominance as the maker of some of the most advanced chips in the world.

This has also helped the firm weather a recent downturn in the industry, which saw peer Samsung recently warn of a severe decline in profits.

TSMC’s Taiwan-listed shares fell 0.3% on Thursday.

Buffett says geopolitics a factor in Berkshire sale of TSMC stake

(Reuters) - Warren Buffett called geopolitical tensions "a consideration" in Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE:BRKa) Inc's decision to sell most of its stake in Taiwanese chipmaker TSMC just a few months after buying it, Nikkei reported on Tuesday.

Berkshire had bought more than $4.1 billion of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co's shares between July and September 2022, but in February said it had sold 86% of its stake by year-end.

The size of the investment suggested that Buffett, rather than one of his Berkshire portfolio managers, had bought the shares for Berkshire, and the sale was unexpected given the billionaire's preference to invest for the long-term.

In an interview with Nikkei, Buffett described TSMC as a well-managed company, but said Berkshire had better places to deploy capital.

Buffett was in Japan to meet with five Japanese trading houses in which Berkshire invests.

China claims Taiwan as its own, a claim Taiwan rejects. Tensions over the democratically governed island have been rising, particularly when Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen met with U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Kevin McCarthy last week.

Berkshire owns several dozen businesses including the BNSF railroad and Geico car insurance. It also invests in dozens of stocks, including iPhone maker Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL), which Buffett views more as a consumer company than a technology company.

Taiwan Semi upgraded at Susquehanna following weak March sales report
Susquehanna upgraded Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (NYSE:TSM) to Positive from Neutral today and raised the price target to $126 from $76, noting that the worst case is dialed into the firm's estimates and investor expectations.

According to Susquehanna, the introduction of new products has led to a moderate increase in revenue in H2/23, after a significant decline in wafer shipments and revenue in H1. Additionally, the utilization rate (UR) is expected to bounce back in Q3/23, following a decline of more than 30 points in H1. This is anticipated to result in a faster recovery of quarterly EPS compared to revenues, with the trend expected to gain momentum into 2024 as new products are introduced at N3/5 nodes.

Last week, the company reported weaker-than-expected sales for March. Revenue of NT$145.41 billion (US$4.77B) was down 15.4% year-over-year and down 10.9% month-over-month. Overall, Q1 sales came in at NT$508.63B, rising 3.6% year-over-year, but missing the consensus estimate of NT$525.5B.
