PARIS (Reuters) -Remy Cointreau is confident that demand for its premium cognac in China, the United States and Europe will underpin profit growth this year after the French spirits group beat third-quarter sales forecasts.

The pandemic has boosted Remy Cointreau's drive towards higher-priced spirits to boost profit margins long term, accelerating a consumer shift towards premium drinks, at-home consumption, cocktails and e-commerce.

Group sales for the three months to Dec. 31 came in at 440.5 million euros ($498.1 million), an organic rise of 21%, beating a company-compiled consensus from 18 analysts for a 15.1% increase.

Sales at the Remy Martin cognac division, which makes 90% of group profits, rose 19.4% to 332.7 million euros, also above analysts' estimates of 14.9%.

"Remy’s beat sets the tone for solid spirits earnings season. We expect low-to-mid-single-digit consensus upgrades," Citi analysts said in a note.

The consensus currently forecasts full year 2021-22 organic current operating profit growth of 38%.

By 0702 GMT, Remy shares were up 0.7% at 192.40 euros.

For the Chinese New Year that starts on Feb.1, Remy Cointreau said it was "cautiously optimistic considering COVID restrictions which will lead to market share gains."

"This wording suggests the market could be impacted by lockdowns, however Remy is confident it will outperform," Credit Suisse (SIX:CSGN) analysts wrote.

The company said the third-quarter performance reflected "remarkable" sales growth in China led by demand for its Club cognac and strong e-commerce sales during the Singles' Day online shopping bonanza.

Cognac demand in the United States also remained strong in the third quarter, with high-end brands such as Louis XIII cognac that sells for more than $2000 a bottle, Remy Martin XO and 1738 Accor (PA:ACCP) Royal outperforming.

For the 2021/22 full year, Remy Cointreau kept a forecast of "very strong" organic growth in current operating profit and strong organic sales growth, and reiterated it was confident in its ability to outperform the premium spirits market.

Due to higher marketing and communication spending and a tougher comparison base in the second half, full-year profits will be driven solely by first-half growth, the group reiterated.

The French company's fiscal year starts on April 1 and ends on March 31.

Założył go lokalny hodowca winorośli Henri Lhôpital.

(PAP Life)

Remy Cointreau to enter perfume market at 5,500 euros a bottle  8)

PARIS (Reuters) - Known for its prized Louis XIII cognac, Remy Cointreau is entering the luxury fragrance market with the launch of Maison Psyche, an upscale perfume house that will sell scents starting at 5,500 euros a bottle.

The French spirits group will draw on its experience in blending and ageing spirits, as well as marketing to high end clientele, as it seeks to tap into affluent consumers' thirst for exclusivity.

The new business could be “potentially strategic,” Remy Cointreau chief executive Eric Vallat told Reuters.

The executive did not provide financial details but said it would start out small, compared to the spirits group which has annual sales of around 1.3 billion euros.

"We have real ambition. If this project works, others will follow," said Vallat, noting he sees the label as "a natural extension" of Remy Cointreau's activities.

The move comes as the luxury industry doubles down on serving wealthier clients who can still afford to splash out on high end goods despite rising inflation.

The world's biggest luxury group LVMH has been investing in luxury hospitality serving higher end clients, opening five-star Cheval Blanc and Bulgari hotels in Paris, while recent expectation-beating trading updates from labels like Hermes, which sells $10,000 handbags, illustrate the resilience of labels at the higher end.

The market for niche, high-end fragrances has also been booming, with strong appetite in the United States in particular, prompting investments like Puig's purchase of Byredo.

Remy Cointreau's Maison Psyche was born from the collaboration of Baptiste Loiseau, Cellar Master of Remy Martin and Sophie Labbe, Principal Perfumer of Switzerland's fragrance group Firmenich.

Maison Psyche's first collection of five exclusive fragrances have spent time maturing in Cognac in western France in specially designed small oak barrels.

They will be sold in Baccarat crystal bottles, adorned in gold – some with diamonds, numbered and only available in very limited quantities.

Orders have already been coming in, Vallat said, noting the label would aim to serve wealthy clients that already buy the group's Louis XIII cognac, its blend of eaux de vie aged up to a hundred years and priced at over $3,000 a bottle on average.

Maison Psyche will sell its perfumes directly to consumers through appointments in special venues such as an exclusive Paris apartment, with a plan to expand worldwide within six months, Vallat said.

Rémy Cointreau falls on slower sales outlook after pandemic boom

Investing.com -- Rémy Cointreau (EPA:RCOP) stock fell in early trading on Thursday after the French spirits giant said it expects growth to slow in the second half of its fiscal year.

CEO Eric Vallat said the six months through March will likely show a "return to normal consumption in the post-covid era."

In absolute terms, the company expects consumption to be well above pre-COVID levels but Vallat warned that the company's explosive growth in the last two years will make for some tough comparisons. He nonetheless repeated the company's full-year guidance, saying that Rémy was ahead of schedule in meeting its strategic targets.

Rémy Cointreau stock fell over 3% at the opening before paring losses to trade down less than 1% by 04:05 ET (09:05 GMT). The stock had more than doubled during the pandemic as locked-down consumers consoled themselves with small luxuries to compensate for the loss of other spending opportunities. It has held on to more than half of those gains despite the broad selloff in equities this year.

The company was able to push through some formidable price rises of over 11% on the year in the first half, another indicator of how much of this year's inflation at the consumer price level has been driven by margin expansion rather than any other factors. Despite the price rises, sales volumes rose 9.7%, giving a total rise of 21% in organic sales.

The depreciation of the euro also added a powerful tailwind, adding over €48 million to reported sales and boosting its operating margin by 2.2 percentage points. Over the full year, the company said it expects currency factors to add between €110-120M in sales and €55-60M in operating profit.

Foreign exchange swings accounted for more than half of an overall 3.8-point expansion in margins. Much of the rest of the improvement came from the temporary suspension of marketing spending in China, the company fearing that consumers would be unable to respond to it in an environment of repeated localized lockdowns due to COVID-19.

Net profit rose 67% to €224M, while earnings per share rose 65% to €4.40.

Investing.com -- Shares in French drinks groups Pernod Ricard (EPA:PERP) and Remy Cointreau (EPA:RCOP) fell on Monday, after analysts at JPMorgan sounded a note of caution about the outlook for sales in the crucial U.S. market.

JPMorgan analysts said they would take a "conservative" view for U.S. sales this year, given the ongoing squeeze on real incomes through high inflation and the depletion of pandemic-era savings.

They lowered their recommendation on Pernod Ricard, the maker of Havana Club rum, Absolut vodka and Jameson's whisky, to neutral from overweight and also put the stock on negative catalyst watch.

The analysts also kept their underweight rating on Remy Cointreau, which had warned late last year that it expected a "normalization" of consumption trends in 2023 after a sharp rebound in the wake of COVID-19 restrictions being lifted.

By 05:00 ET (09:00 GMT), Pernod Ricard stock was down 1.3% in Paris, while Remy Cointreau stock was down 1.8%. The benchmark CAC 40 index, by contrast, was up 0.9% on a morning when stock markets broadly were breathing a sigh of relief at the lack of financial sector drama over the weekend.

Diageo (LON:DGE) stock was up 0.1% in London, while Campari (BIT:CPRI) stock was up 0.3% in Milan.
