MILAN (Reuters) -Italy's biggest utility Enel (MI:ENEI) is ready to dust off plans to build a liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in southern Italy as Rome steps up efforts to find alternative supplies to replace Russian gas.

In comments to Reuters on Tuesday Enel said it was useful for Italy to have two additional LNG terminals so as to be less tied to gas pipelines.

"For this reason, Enel has given availability to resume the Porto Empedocle LNG plant project, that is fully permitted," an Enel spokesperson said.

Since Russia invaded Ukraine, Italy has ramped up efforts to secure alternative sources of gas, with LNG-rich Qatar a particular focus of attention.

Italy aims to become independent of Russian gas imports within 24-30 months, Energy Transition Minister Roberto Cingolani said on Tuesday.

Italy, which uses gas to generate some 40% of electricity, imports more than 90% of its gas needs with Russian flows accounting for around 40%. It has other pipeline connections to Algeria, Azerbaijan, Libya and the North Sea but only three LNG terminals.

Two sources said Rome was eager to install at least one floating LNG terminal, or FSRU.

One of the sources said energy group Eni and gas infrastructure group Snam had been asked to help out on the logistics including looking for the FSRU to charter.

Other European countries are seeking to build LNG facilities to wean themselves off Russian gas. On Saturday Germany unveiled plans for a terminal.

Eni and Snam declined to comment. The Industry and Ecological Transition ministries were not immediately available for a comment.

CERNOBBIO, Italy (Reuters) - Italian utility Enel (BIT:ENEI) has no indication on when it can close the sale of its Russian unit, CEO Francesco Starace said on Saturday, adding prospective buyer Lukoil had sought the necessary authorisation.

"Lukoil has put in the necessary request ... and we're awaiting a response," Starace said during a press briefing at a business conference in northern Italy.

Enel announced in June it had reached a deal with Russia's Lukoil and investment fund Gazprombank-Frezia to sell its 56.43% stake in Enel Russia for around 137 million euros, which will be paid at closing.

Russia put Enel's local subsidiary on a preliminary list of companies that investors from so-called unfriendly countries are banned from selling this year, unless they get special presidential permission.

Moscow later introduced a further requirement, demanding that the prospective buyer also seeks authorisation to acquire the asset.

CSX announced earnings per share of 52 cents on revenue of $3.90 billion. Analysts polled by Investing.com anticipated EPS of 50 cents on revenue of $3.75 billion.

CSX shares rose 3% in after-hours trading. They are down 27% from the beginning of the year, and down 29.90% from its 52-week high of $38.63 set on March 7.

Revenue was up 18% from last year. Operating income was up 10%. The company said "third quarter results include additional labor and fringe expense related to tentative union agreements, with $42 million specifically to adjust for wage, bonus, and other benefit costs in prior periods."

MILAN (Reuters) - Italy's biggest utility Enel (BIT:ENEI) and Israel's Brenmiller Energy have teamed up to build a rock-based storage system in Tuscany as they test new technologies to increase flexibility in the use of renewable energy.

The two groups inaugurated on Friday a thermal energy storage (TES) project integrated with Enel's power plant near the Tuscan town of Arezzo.

The technology allows excess energy produced from renewable sources to be stored in the form of heat and makes the power plant more flexible, the two groups said in a joint statement.

"This solution makes renewables more reliable, flexible and resilient and can be used to decarbonise sectors that need heat at high temperatures," said Enel's Head of Innovation Ernesto Ciorra, adding the system was based on the use of common stones and not rare materials, making it sustainable.

The TES technology utilizes a two-stage charge and discharge process to provide thermal energy. During the charging phase, steam produced by Enel's power plant passes through pipes to heat adjacent crushed rocks. During the discharging phase, the accumulated heat is released to heat pressurized water and generate steam for electricity.

This system can store up to 24 MWh of clean heat at a temperature of about 550°C for five hours, providing critical resiliency to the power plant.

The project was partly financed by the Israeli Innovation Authority, which supported Brenmiller with 1 million euros in financing.

Italy's Enel to build solar PV cell & panel factory in U.S

MILAN (Reuters) -Italian utility Enel (BIT:ENEI) said on Thursday it would build a solar photovoltaic (PV) cell and panel manufacturing facility in the United States in an effort to support the creation of a North-American supply chain.

The factory is expected to initially produce at least 3 gigawatt (GW) and scale up to 6 GW of high-performance bifacial PV modules and cells annually, the group said in a statement.

The group said the facility is expected to be among the first to produce solar cells in the United States, where a ban on imports of some Chinese solar materials is creating issues for energy developers.

To support the development of renewable energy, the U.S. administration has passed legislation offering incentives to producers of a wide range of energy materials including solar panels.

"Recent policy tailwinds from the Inflation Reduction Act have served as a catalyst for our solar manufacturing ambitions in the U.S., ushering in a new era of made-in-America energy," the head of Enel North America Enrico Viale said in a statement.

The new factory will create 1,500 jobs by 2025.

The construction of the factory is expected to begin in the first half of 2023 and the first panel will be available to the market by the end of 2024.

The U.S. project follows a similar initiative Enel is developing in southern Italy, where it is scaling up an existing solar PV panel plant to become a gigafactory producing up to 3 GW.

"Enel intends to replicate the gigafactory factory in the U.S. to produce bifacial heterojunction PV cells that capture more sunlight," the group said.
