nvesting.com -- NatWest (LON:NWG) stock rose early Wednesday in London as the U.K. government said it will delay selling down its stake in the lender.

By 04:40 a.m. ET (0840 GMT), NatWest shares were trading 3.5% higher, making them the best performing stock in the FTSE 100 on a day when the latest relief rally in global stocks ran into a familiar pattern of fresh selling.

U.K. Government Investments, which manages the government's stake, said it will extend the current Trading Plan by another 12 months to August 2023 to "effect a measured and orderly sell-down."

The government has sold around 1.6 billion pounds in NatWest stock since announcing its trading plan last year. While it is eager to end its period as an owner of the country's largest bank, it has to balance that objective against the risk of pushing down the share price if it sells too much, too fast. That risk has risen as overall market conditions have turned bearish in recent months - even if NatWest has largely escaped the carnage, thanks to the fact that rising interest rates help the profitability of its core lending business.

The trading plan contains the requirement that shares are not sold at a price below what the government considers 'value for money' for U.K. taxpayers, but that price isn't public.

NatWest shares are roughly flat for the year to date, barely outperforming the FTSE 100 which has fallen 4%.

The U.K. government currently owns a 48% stake in the bank, thanks to its bailout in 2008 of what was then known as Royal Bank of Scotland Group, the most expensive government-sponsored bank rescue in the U.K.'s history.

NatWest Group (LON:NWG) recorded its highest profit since before the global financial crash, but the stock of the 45% state-owned bank slumped over 8% as high profits and a generally rising share price may mean the government divests more of its stake.

NatWest limits customers' crypto transfers, citing scam concerns

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's NatWest has imposed new limits on the daily and monthly amount customers can send to cryptocurrency exchanges, seeking to protect consumers from "crypto-criminals", the bank said on Tuesday.

From Tuesday customer transfers to cryptocurrency exchanges will be limited to 5,000 pounds ($6,088) per 30-day period, with no more than 1,000 pounds per day, NatWest said.

Regulators around the world have warned of the risks of scams and fraud in the largely unregulated world of crypto trading.

Consumers across the UK lost 329 million pounds in crypto crime last year, NatWest said, with the cost-of-living crisis contributing to the problem as criminals lure investors with the promise of high returns.

"We have seen an increase in the number of scams using cryptocurrency exchanges and we are acting to protect our customers," said Stuart Skinner, head of fraud protection at NatWest, which is one of Britain's domestic biggest lenders.

In June 2021 NatWest introduced some daily caps on customers' crypto transfers to crypto exchanges, including top platform Binance, with the limits varying in size depending on the platform in question. It cited concerns over investment scams and fraud.

Santander (BME:SAN) said in November last year that it would block customers from sending real-time payments to cryptocurrency exchanges some time this year.

Obrazek

NatWest was in focus after the UK government said it has extended plans to sell down its stake in the bank.

UK Government Investments (UKGI), which manages the government's 41.5% shareholding in the lender, first announced plans to start slowing selling down its stake in July 2021. It was extended last summer until 11 August 2023, and it will now be extended once again, to 11 August 2025.

LONDON (Reuters) -British bank NatWest posted better than expected profit for the first three months of 2023 as income soared 37%, even as inflation hammered households and fierce pricing competition squeezed the bank's customer deposits.

NatWest reported pretax profit of 1.8 billion pounds ($2.25 billion) for the first quarter, above the 1.6 billion pound average of analyst forecasts compiled by the bank and the 1.2 billion pounds achieved a year earlier.

Like rival Barclays (LON:BARC), which reported results on Thursday, higher interest rates continued to lift the bank's revenue.

But the higher rate environment does pose challenges for lenders and NatWest blamed a 19.8 billion pound outflow in deposits partly on fiercer pricing competition as well as its disposal of Ulster Bank.

Deposit levels at banks have attracted closer scrutiny after the rapid collapse of U.S. lender Silicon Valley Bank sparked jitters across the global banking sector and highlighted how quickly customers can shift money in the digital era.

NatWest chair Howard Davies, who plans to leave the bank by the middle of next year, this week said that "poor risk management" was largely behind recent bank failures and that NatWest remains resilient.

Bank investors are also wary that inflation remains stubbornly high in Britain, squeezing household budgets and raising the risk of borrowers falling behind on loan repayments.

High prices also raise the chances of Bank of England interest rates staying higher for longer, pushing up borrowing costs and further crimping consumer spending power.

State-backed NatWest set aside 70 million pounds to cover potential loan defaults, compared with a small release of cash reserves the previous year, but it said loan arrears remained low and the charge was below the 144 million pounds booked in the previous quarter.

"By monitoring customer behaviour and looking closely for signs of financial distress we are able to put in place proactive measures to help those who are struggling right now," Chief Executive Alison Rose said.

Shares in NatWest fell despite the UK bank reporting better-than-expected first-quarter profit driven by higher interest rates, as it also posted a sharp drop in deposits as customers chased better rates, with incomes squeezed by rising inflation. Lloyds was also in the red.

Matt Britzman, equity analyst at Hargreaves Lansdown, said the outflow of customer deposits over the quarter was "not cause for concern", however.

"Consumers shopping around for the best rates isn't much of a surprise, given they've spent years getting little to nothing from their cash deposits," he said. "For now, higher interest rates are doing their job to prop up earnings and offset the impact of a more challenging and competitive mortgage market."
