Rakuten, Inc. jap. TYO: 4755 is a Japanese electronic commerce and Internet company based in Tokyo, Japan. Its B2B2C e-commerce platform Rakuten Ichiba is the largest e-commerce site in Japan and among the world's largest by sales.

[...] Wcześniej Buy.com, a teraz Rakuten.com, będzie kontynuował swoją misję dostarczania niepowtarzalnych przeżyć zakupowych do ponad 18 milionów klientów, oferując szeroki zakres dóbr i sprzedawców."

Stworzona w 1997 roku korporacja oferuje swoim klientom szeroki wachlarz usług z obszaru e-handlu, finansów i cyfryzacji.

TOKYO
Japan’s Rakuten said on Monday it will book a 110 billion yen ($989.74 million) gain in the quarter through March on its investment in Lyft following the U.S. ride-hailing firm’s listing last week.

Rakuten become Lyft’s largest shareholder with a 13 percent stake ahead of its IPO. Lyft shares closed 9 percent higher at $78.29 in their market debut on Friday, giving the loss-making firm a market capitalization of around $22.2 billion.

Rakuten’s shares have climbed 38 percent this year on rising investor expectations of returns on its tech investments.

Those bets include ride-hailing firm Careem, which is being acquired by Uber for $3.1 billion, and image sharing website Pinterest, which has filed for an IPO.

Rakuten’s finances are being squeezed with falling margins at its core e-commerce unit and it is making an ambitious attempt to break into Japan’s mature telecoms market with the start of carrier services in October.

Rakuten profit jumps fourfold on $1 billion Lyft stake gain
TOKYO
Japanese e-commerce firm Rakuten Inc’s first-quarter operating profit jumped fourfold as it booked a $1 billion gain on its stake in U.S. ride-hailing company Lyft Inc.

Rakuten has grabbed investor attention with its overseas tech bets, despite modest means compared with bigger Japanese rival SoftBank Group Corp, whose founder and CEO Masayoshi Son has tapped Saudi Arabian oil money and abundant cash from SoftBank’s telco business to fund his tech investments.

Rakuten’s investments include Lyft, which listed in March, and online scrapbook company Pinterest Inc, which listed last month. It also took a stake in Dubai-based ride-hailing firm Careem, which Uber Technologies said in March it would acquire for $3.1 billion.

The tech bets have helped drive Rakuten’s shares up 56% this year, making it one of the top performers in the Nikkei 225 index.

Its operating profit rose to 113.7 billion yen ($1.04 billion) in the three months ended March from 28.1 billion yen a year earlier, Rakuten said on Friday. Without the Lyft investment gain, profit was just 3.2 billion yen.

Rakuten is under pressure on multiple fronts as it invests in areas such as logistics to bolster its core online mall business amid competition from rivals like Amazon.com Inc and SoftBank-backed Yahoo Japan Corp, while also spending on areas like financial services and telecoms.

Rakuten’s billionaire founder and CEO Hiroshi Mikitani is making a big bet on becoming Japan’s fourth major mobile carrier, as it looks to break into an industry where the last successful entrant was Son’s SoftBank, which acquired Vodafone Group’s Japanese mobile business in 2006.

Mikitani, who founded Rakuten in 1997, hopes carrier services will help drive traffic to Rakuten’s other businesses including the online mall and financial services, such as credit cards, securities trading and life insurance.

The efforts are an industry talking point, with Rakuten saying it has cut the cost of building a network by using cloud-based software and commoditized hardware instead of proprietary wireless radios.

Its outlay is dwarfed by ongoing investment by the incumbent telcos.

Operating loss at Rakuten’s mobile business, set to begin carrier services later this year, swelled tenfold from a year earlier to 6.4 billion yen.

Rakuten shares closed up 2.2% ahead of the earnings release.

Sellers ask antitrust body to probe Rakuten's free shipping policy

TOKYO
Merchants on Rakuten Inc's online shopping mall have requested that the Japan Fair Trade Commission investigate the e-commerce giant's planned "free shipping" policy, according to sources familiar with the move.

Some online stores allege that Rakuten abuses its dominant position to force them to shoulder shipping costs in violation of the antimonopoly law, the sources said Saturday.

If the commission orders the operator to revise the policy, it could affect competition with rivals such as Amazon Japan GK, which ships products at low cost through its own distribution network.

The commission has been stepping up surveillance and regulations on Rakuten and other so-called platformers on online businesses.

Some merchants are preparing to set up a union so they can negotiate with Rakuten as a group, according to the sources.

But it is not immediately known whether the operator will respond to a call for negotiations.

In March, Rakuten will start free shipping on all orders exceeding 3,980 yen ($36), except those from Okinawa Prefecture and remote islands.

At present, merchants on Rakuten's online shopping mall independently set shipping fees for each item, with some providing free shipping and others offering no such services.

Small-scale sellers say they cannot survive without passing on shipping costs to customers, a move that would make them less competitive than major merchants.

However, Rakuten officials argue a free-shipping service for a minimum purchase amount would increase the number of customers and the amount of purchases, which would benefit merchants in the long term.

About 49,000 merchants are taking part in Rakuten's online shopping mall, generating a total of some 3.4 trillion yen in transaction last year, making it one of the biggest players in Japan.

Major cybermall operator Rakuten Inc. plans to sell OverDrive Holdings Inc., a wholly owned U.S. unit that provides electronic book distribution services.

Rakuten announced Wednesday that it will sell all outstanding shares of the Ohio-based subsidiary, which provides e-books to libraries and educational institutions, to a U.S. investment fund at the end of January next year.

The Japanese company did not disclose the value of the deal, but said it plans to book some ¥40 billion in proceeds from the sale in January-March 2020.

In 2015, Rakuten acquired OverDrive for approximately ¥50 billion. It intended to have Rakuten Kobo Inc., a unit selling e-books to individuals, and OverDrive collaborate, but apparently failed to achieve significant progress on the coordination effort.

Rakuten said it decided on the sale as part of its efforts to optimize the allocation of the Rakuten group’s management resources.
