McDonald's i Burger King testują programy lojalnościowe

Burger King, najpopularniejsza sieć przedsiębiorstwa Restaurant Brands International, skorzysta z programów nagród, aby promować produkty i maksymalnie zwiększać sprzedaż.

Plan przewiduje, że klienci Burger Kinga w Los Angeles, Miami, Nowym Jorku, New Jersey i Long Island będą mogli gromadzić punkty nagród za każdego wydanego dolara.

Burger King dołącza do "wojny kurczaków" w wielkim stylu

Here’s the thing to consider when you look at Restaurant Brands International (QSR) - Get Restaurant Brands International Inc Report: Investors often have unrealistic expectations, and that can make even a thriving business look like a disappointment.

“Only on Wall Street can projected all-time record results be treated as "bad news." Paul Price wrote recently on Real Money. "However, that was the case ... with Restaurant Brands International."

Restaurant Brands' third-quarter earnings per share were 70 cents (GAAP) and 76 cents (adjusted) versus 47 cents a year earlier. Despite the big gain, somewhat subdued management guidance knocked down full-year 2021 estimates from $3.00 to about $2.83.

"Next year's EPS figures now are expected to come in around $3.25 versus the $3.35 expected prior to the latest news. Yet both years likely will still set new EPS records."

Price notes that “Restaurant Brands management wisely went to an almost 100% franchised status a few years back. Less than 1% of units are now company-owned. International sales were about 11% of revenue in 2020.”

He added that there has been "enormous growth over the past seven years for Restaurant Brands and ... relatively huge un-reflected value waiting to be regained by shareholders.”

Yet despite all of this, QSR’s stock price has taken a steady march down over the past six months. From a high near $70 per share it now sits in the mid-$50’s.

Paul Price sees this as an opportunity in waiting for investors.

“What more do you need to know? Buy some QSR shares, sell some LEAP puts or consider doing both.”

Burger King's New Sandwich May Look Familiar to McDonald's Fans

Playing follow the leader lets you make moves that make sense from a business perspective, but seem a little suspicious. Dunkin' (DNKN) - Get Dunkin' Brands Group, Inc. Report, for example, just seems to wait to see what works at Starbucks (SBUX) - Get Starbucks Corporation Report before offering its variation of that success.

The second-tier coffee chain recently (Feb. 2021) added cold foam to its menu, touting it in a cringe-inducing press release that made it seem like the company invented something that Starbucks debuted in 2014.

"Dunkin' is going bold on cold to take its premium Cold Brew to new heights. The brand is introducing Sweet Cold Foam for Cold Brew, debuting with the new Cold Brew with Sweet Cold Foam and Chocolate Stout Flavored Cold Brew with Sweet Cold Foam," it said in a press release.

That's a bold play for a copycat product, but that has been the Dunkin' way and, it's a classic follow-the-leader strategy. Restaurants Brands International's (QSR) - Get Restaurant Brands International Inc Report Burger King hasn't always used those tactics -- it has been an innovator at times -- but it followed McDonald's (MCD) - Get McDonald's Corporation Report lead when it came to its chicken nuggets, its fish sandwich, and the general concept of breakfast sandwiches (though the Croissan'Wich at least varied up the genre a bit).

Now, Burger King has brought back a product that's not shy in its reverence for a classic McDonald's burger.

No, Really, It's Not a Big Mac
When your rival has a signature sandwich called the Big Mac and you come out with a sandwich called the Big King, you're not being subtle. Burger King's variant has roughly the same ingredients as the McDonald's sandwich that's so famous it has a song that's highly recognizable which lists its ingredients.

That jingle, "two all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame seed bun," first aired in 1975.

Burger King's Big King lacks a song, but it features "two flame-grilled beef patties, King Sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions, and a sesame seed bun."

That's the same recipe, as both King Sauce and special sauce are variants on Thousand Island dressing. Burger King does offer "flame-broiled" burgers, while McDonald's cooks its patties on a grill. That's a difference that might matter to diehard fans of the number-two burger chain.

The biggest difference between the Big King and the Big Mac appears to be that the Burger King Sandwich comes in at 1,009 calories while McDonald's signature burger "only" has 550.

Burger King is not being shy here. The Big King is either a blatant copy or a bold challenge to its well-established rival, depending upon your perspective.

Burger King Hasn't Always Been Number Two
The Whopper, Burger Kings' signature sandwich, actually came out in 1957, a full decade before the Big Mac. Since then, however, the Home of the Whopper has struggled with innovation which led to its ham and cheese sandwich, a suspiciously inexpensive veal parmigiana, and oddities like the Egg-Normous Buritto.

Burger King has at least brought the Big King back for sort of innovative reasons. It's using the burger to drive people to sign up for its Royal Perks loyalty rewards program. Members of that program get early access, via the company's app, before it becomes available to non-members (albeit only by a few days).

Offering a Big Mac knockoff shows a lack of innovation, but as Dunkin' has shown, embracing being number two can work. "Inventing" the Big King takes a lot less work than creating something new, and the sandwich has a built-in audience willing to sample a new take on an old classic.

Re: Restaurant Brands TSX&NYSE: QSR Burger King, Tim Hortons

Postautor: slayer74 » 03 cze 2022 10:34

NEW YORK (Reuters) - For at least a decade, Burger King's formula for European expansion has relied on a joint venture partnership, including a master franchisee, to open and operate new locations.

But now the fast-food chain has a whopper of a problem in Russia. It hasn't been able to exit its partnership or close its roughly 800 franchised locations following Russia's February invasion of Ukraine.

Burger King halted corporate support for its Russia locations in March. Parent company Restaurant Brands International (NYSE:QSR) Inc (RBI), which was formed in 2014 when Burger King merged with Tim Hortons, said on March 17 that it was trying to sell its stake in the joint venture.

However, current sanctions by western countries against Russia sharply limit the pool of possible buyers, one person familiar with the matter said.

Reuters could not determine the status of any negotiations.

Part of the problem, lawyers said this week, is the complexity of its joint-venture-style master franchise agreement, which allows Burger King to profit from sales of Whopper burgers without the risk of using its own capital.

Unlike rival McDonald's Corp (NYSE:MCD), which owns the vast majority of its Russia locations, and which plans to sell them to an existing franchisee , Burger King's Toronto-based parent doesn't own any of its own restaurants in Russia.

"There's just a really complex contractual and legal atmosphere right now that's giving franchisees and franchisors in Russia no good option," said Liz Dillon, partner at Lathrop GPM in Minneapolis.

According to a March 17 open letter to employees from RBI International President David Shear, RBI holds a 15% stake in Burger King Russia Ltd, its Russia joint venture.

Additional partners are Russia's state-owned bank VTB, which has been sanctioned by the United States and European Union, and Kyiv-based private equity and asset management firm Investment Capital Ukraine (ICU), Shear's letter said.

And Alexander Kolobov, Burger King's master franchisee in Russia, owns 30% of the joint venture, Kolobov told Reuters in an email in March.

RBI blamed Kolobov for refusing to shut restaurants, according to Shear's letter. But Kolobov told Reuters at the time that he had never had full operational control and lacked the authority to close restaurants without agreement from all the joint venture partners.

A spokesperson for Kolobov said via email that he declined to comment on whether he was in talks to buy RBI's stake of the joint venture. RBI referred Reuters back to Shear's letter. VTB could not be reached for comment.

A franchisor "can't physically or legally stop a franchisee from operating if they wish to do so" in the current situation, said Lee Plave, a franchise attorney at Plave Koch PLC in Virginia. "The legal remedies that are available take time, and even when you pursue them, you'd still end up in a Russian courtroom to enforce an order, which is an unlikely prospect at this time."

To be sure, some lawyers told Reuters that forcing franchisees to close their locations is unfair to regular Russian people who had nothing to do with the government's decision to invade Ukraine. "The franchisees in Russia are not the ones waging war on Ukraine. The customers who go into those stores are not the ones waging war," said Beata Kraukus, a franchise lawyer at Greensfelder in Chicago.

Leaving Russia also potentially exposes companies to a new law advancing there that would allow the government to seize local assets of western companies that exit – adding pressure on companies to remain.

Burger King's parent and other U.S.-based companies will soon be subject to a new rule from the Biden Administration - taking effect June 7 - that limits their ability to provide "management consulting services" to anyone in Russia.

Some lawyers believe the rule could be read to cover services that brands normally provide to franchisees, including sourcing products, management techniques, inventory controls, site selection, operations manuals and even just taking a call seeking advice.

"It puts a lot of pressure on these companies," said Erik Wulff, a partner at DLA Piper in Washington, who specializes in franchise law for global consumer product, clothing and footwear companies.

"What will likely happen in a number of these situations is that the U.S. partner will be bought out," Wulff said. "At that point, it's a distressed sale."

McDonald's ma powód do zmartwień. Gigant z USA Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen wchodzi do Polski

(Reuters) -Restaurant Brands International Inc beat Wall Street estimates for first-quarter revenue and profit on Tuesday, boosted by higher traffic and prices at Tim Hortons restaurants in Canada despite closures of some U.S. Burger King locations.

The company's global comparable sales rose nearly 10% in the March quarter, versus analysts' estimates of 6.5% according to Refinitiv IBES data. Tim Hortons Canada sales grew 16% and Burger King International's were 12% higher. Shares were up 1.5%.

Big restaurant chains have posted strong sales in the first quarter despite rising concerns about consumer spending power this year amid stubbornly high inflation.

McDonald's Corp (NYSE:MCD) and Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc (NYSE:CMG) also topped quarterly sales and profit expectations as they pushed new menu items and raised prices over the past year to protect margins from a jump in raw materials and labor costs.

While Burger King has been adding restaurants and growing comparable sales internationally, in the United States it has struggled with bankruptcies by two big franchisees.

In the first quarter, Burger King closed a net 124 U.S. locations or 1.7%, to end the quarter with just under 7,000 U.S. restaurants, according to its earnings release.

This year, the brand is seeking additional franchisees with stronger finances but still expects to close between 300 and 400 more restaurants, Chief Executive Joshua Kobza said during a call with investors. Usually, it closes a couple hundred annually, he said.

"There will always be a minority (of franchisees) who aren't dedicated, enthusiastic operators," Chairman Patrick Doyle said on the call. "We'll work with them to leave the system."

The brand's $400 million "Reclaim the Flame" turnaround plan - to reverse its loss of market share, revive run-down restaurants, streamline overly complicated menus and operations, and draw more young customers - may be starting to work as Burger King's U.S. comparable sales rose 8.7%.

Tim Hortons drove visits higher - including during afternoon hours - with new items like chipotle steak for its loaded bowls and wraps.

Higher menu prices and other offerings like cold brew also drove sales.

Excluding items, Restaurant Brands, which also owns Popeyes and Firehouse Subs, earned 75 cents per share, compared with estimates of 64 cents, according to Refinitiv IBES data.

Total revenue rose to $1.59 billion from $1.45 billion a year earlier. Analysts on average had expected $1.56 billion.
