Ford Mustang Mach-E Grabs EV Share From Tesla
Ford (F) delivered record February EV sales in the first full month of sales for the Mustang Mach-E electric crossover, which took market share from Tesla (TSLA). Ford stock pulled back, trading around various buy points.
Year over year, new vehicle sales fell 14.1% to 163,520 last month, Ford said in a news release. That included declines of 3.6% for Ford trucks, 10.2% for SUVs and 65.2% for passenger cars, the last a market that the auto giant has all but exited.
Overall retail sales dipped 1.8%. Retail truck sales rose 10.2% and retail SUV sales gained 0.2%.
IBD Live: A New Tool For Daily Stock Market Analysis
Ford sold 3,739 Mustang Mach-E electric vehicles, a rival to Tesla's Model Y. A hybrid F-150 truck also helped boost Ford's EV and hybrid sales last month to 9,267 units, up 56% from a year ago and a record for February.
"Nearly 70% of Mach-E orders are from competitive brands, while just over one-fifth were sold in California," Ford's release said. California is both the largest U.S. market for EVs and Tesla's home ground.
In a note March 2, Morgan Stanley analysts said the Ford Mustang Mach-E stole EV share from Tesla last month. "While U.S. EV sales rose 34% in February, Tesla's share fell to 69% from 81% the prior year, they wrote. "The Ford Mustang Mach-E accounted for nearly 100% of the share loss," they added.

Ford Partners With Nio On Charging As Chinese Auto Giant Geely Eyes EV Deal
FacebookTwitterLinkedInShare Licensing
ADELIA CELLINI LINECKER04:11 PM ET 04/13/2021
Ford (F) opened preorders for its made-in-China Mustang Mach-E in 20 major cities across China, as the U.S. automaker announces that it will also have access to Nio's (NIO) charging network. Ford stock fell.
The company will also work closely with charging partners such as the State Grid, the company said in a statement. Mustang Mach-E users can access over 300,000 high-quality public charging piles, of which 160,000 are fast charging, in more than 340 cities across the country.
In addition, Ford will be the first to offer plug-and-charge functionality on 45,000 fast charging piles without the need for using a mobile app.
The Mach-E will cost between $40,000 and $58,000 in China. It will come with preinstalled intelligent driver assist hardware that supports wireless software upgrades.
Meanwhile, Polestar, a Swedish EV maker owned by Volvo and Geely, is considering going public in the U.S. in 2021 either through a special purpose acquisition company or an initial public offering.
Polestar could be valued at more than $10 billion in any deal. Polestar, which makes high-performance electric cars, is wrapping up a Series A fundraising round that will value it at $7 billion.
The company's Polestar 2 started production last March at Geely's plant in Luqiao, China. In September, the automaker launched production of a second car, the Polestar Precept. That vehicle's interiors will be made out of recycled PET bottles and cork vinyl as well as reclaimed fishing nets. Volvo and Geely are backed by Chinese billionaire Li Shuf.

Ford sees better-than-expected quarterly profit on higher vehicle prices
(Reuters) -Ford Motor Co said on Thursday its second-quarter operating profit will exceed expectations due to lower costs and rising prices for new and used vehicles amid the global semiconductor chip shortage.
Ford Chief Executive Jim Farley also said at a Deutsche Bank (DE:DBKGn) conference that the No. 2 U.S. automaker will eventually raise its spending on electric vehicles beyond the $30 billion-plus through 2025 that it outlined last month. He added the Argo AI self-driving software startup, in which Ford invested, will need more funding in the future.
Ford will provide a more detailed forecast for the second half of the year when it reports second-quarter results on July 28. The Dearborn, Michigan-based company previously said the chip shortage would cost it $2.5 billion this year and halve vehicle production in the second quarter.
Farley said the availability of chips will not return to normal in the auto industry until some time next year. He added that Ford had been harder hit than other automakers by the fire at a Japanese plant of Renesas Electronics Corp which affected chip production.
However, the chip shortage has also led to lower vehicle inventories, causing consumers to pay higher prices for new cars as well as used cars at vehicle auctions, benefitting Ford Credit, the company said.
"It's just strengthening every day - pretty breathtaking actually," Farley said, referring to vehicle pricing for new and used cars.
Ford also cited high interest in several vehicles, including the recently launched Bronco SUV, which has 125,000 orders. The company has 100,000 reservations for the F-150 Lightning electric pickup that will launch next spring.
As far as the rollout of EVs in the United States, Farley said the Biden administration should fashion incentives that benefit both consumers who buy EVs as well as factory workers who produce them. The United Auto Workers union has praised a bill under consideration that would give extra incentives for American-made and union-made EVs.
Ford also said that its net income for the second quarter will be substantially lower than a year ago, when it benefitted from a $3.5 billion gain on its investment in Argo.

Ford surprises Wall Street with Q2 profit, sees chip supply ‘improving’
Ford Motor Co. late Wednesday swung to a surprise quarterly profit, saying “strong” demand allowed it to forgo discounts on its vehicles, and guided for a better 2021 with an improving outlook for chip supplies.
Ford F, +0.51% said it earned $600 million, or 14 cents a share, in the second quarter, compared with $1.1 billion, or 28 cents a share, in the year-ago quarter. Adjusted for one-time items, Ford earned 13 cents a share.
Sales rose 38% to $26.8 billion, from $19.4 billion a year ago.
Analysts polled by FactSet expected Ford to report an adjusted loss of 3 cents a share on sales of $23 billion. The stock rose more than 2% in the extended session Wednesday.
The auto maker guided for a better 2021 operating results, “driven by strong order bank (and) improving semiconductor supplies,” it said.
The all-electric version of its iconic F-150 pickup truck has 120,000 reservations since its unveiling in May, about three-quarters of them from customers who are new to Ford, the company said.
With the chip shortage worsening in April, Ford warned investors its production would take a 50% hit, which would have resulted in a quarterly loss.
“In fact, Ford did better than expected, leveraging strong demand to optimize revenue and profits through lower incentives and a favorable mix of vehicles, which generated companywide adjusted earnings before interest and taxes of $1.1 billion,” it said.

In May, Ford announced plans to invest in and offer more electric vehicles in the coming years, earning Wall Street praise for having a “coherent strategy” to remain competitive amid the broader industry shift away from gas-powered vehicles.
The stock has gained about 56% this year, compared with gains of around 17% for the S&P 500 index SPX, -0.02%.

Wartość inwestycji to 11,4 mld dol.
